Development Camp 2022 (July 10th-13th)

I love Hutson, but it is completely normal that Hutson looks very good in that kind of scrimmage. People needs to calm down.

He has a great potential, great tools, but in a 4vs4 or 3vs3 without any physical stuff, it's sure that he will look very good. Yes he has great feet, very wise, but it is not even 50% of real game.

The challenge will be when he will have the face in the window, when he has to battle on the board repeatedly, when he will have to box out, etc.

Great hockey sens, great ability, but god, we cannot judge a potential career about a development camp.

The samething can be applied to Slafkovsky, Mesar, Heineman, Farrell, etc. They are all coming with new gear, after an exhausting weekend when they need to do marketing stuff for few guys, draft stuff, interviews, etc.

Take the positive from this camp, get a good look about what kind of player they are, but stop trying to predict a career with a fricking development camp which is about skills, 4vs4, etc.

100%

But Hutson is just, very good. 3 vs 3, 4 vs 4, in normal games, always. I watched him all year!

As for Slafkovsky i think he’s doing good but oh boy he must be tired with the week he had last week. It never stopped since.

Pure skill guys will look amazing in this setting.

Cooley I'm sure would look like a god in this scenario.

But hockey, playoff hockey, etc.. is not a development camp or skills competition.

Don’t be suprised if Slafkovsky looks better against men with more structured game.
He’ll look better with contact, unlike Hutson, but I’m not sure he’ll look good in a systems game with big, fast defenders looking to catch him with his head down. Not sure he’ll look better with better teammates, either. Slaf stood out as the main star on a bad team against bad teams. He should deal with the physical play better than Wright but we’ll see if he’s more effective.

Really hope Slaf doesn’t do the Lindros head down thing and get concussed by a Stevens clone.

Of course he’ll look better with better teammates. Plus we’re talking about a 18 years old, he has plenty of things in his game to get better at over the years which is normal…

His national team teammates are not so good and he does well there. His older liiga teammates are good and he did not do much there. Or maybe his liiga team stunk?

I'll say one thing about TT and MB, their overall grades on the draft were not good. But since 2017 or 2018, I'd say they've been drafting well. To the point the cupboards have been filled and we have interesting prospects to look forward to.

They're the duo that brought the Habs prospects like Caufield, Suzuki (via trade), Harris, Guhle, Fairbrother, Roy, Kidney, Dobes, Dichow, Norlindrer Struble, Xhekaj, RHP, Ylonen, and Mysak to name a few.

And then this management goes and brings in Barron, Heineman, Slaf, Mesar, Hutson, Beck, Engstrom, and we know more will be coming.
To be fair, a lot of the names you mentioned are just prospects. It's no different than in previous years. In 2012, Habs were deemed the big winners of that draft and Bergevin had apparently fully loaded up our pool of prospects.
Of course, turns out most were crap.

So..let's not get carried away.

I get that wright has some supporters here who are salty about picking slaf. And I totally understand if wright is rocking the first season in NHL and Slaf not that there will be some nasty comments and comparasions. But jeez, trying to do it already on the third day of development camp? Even making things up like some guys here yesterday? With these non-existing videos yesterday from kraken dev camp where Wright looked like the God on the ice, only to find out that nothing like that happened. Because everyone actually could see that 15 seconds video. Yes I know. Everyone wants generational talent from 1 spot. But is that really hard to understand that there was no such player in this draft year? Minimum 3 scouting teams (filled with paid professionals) decided not to take someone you (supporters and not paid professionals) think was the best of the draft. Even there are rumors that had devils taken Jiricek Wright could have been taken from the seventh spot. Is not that suspicious about the guy You think is that good? You will get your chance. As a number one spot player, he is going to get his 9 matches where you can criticize everything you want but doing it in development camp? Be patient!

Slaf established alpha status 20 seconds in and then the speedsters took over.

We have rarely seen a more unanimous draft pick than Hutson and boy does he look good! How can he not make it? Too much skill his size is irrelevant.

Mesar/Beck both showed some nice things. Hitting on all our round 1 & 2 picks would be huge for the rebuild I am optimistic.

Doesn't matter if Slaf busts boys. We got the best player of that draft in Lane Hutson. I've seen all I need too in that scrimmage.

No one convince me otherwise.

I am going to age yself here but i thought he looked like barry manilow. If he keeps up his skating....i think we stole one here.
I remember all my life
Raining down as cold as ice
Shadows of a man
A face through a window
Crying in the night
The night goes into

Morning, just another day
Happy people pass my way
Looking in their eyes
I see a memory
I never realized
How happy you made me

Oh Laney,
Well, you came
And you gave without taking
But I sent you away
Oh, Laney
Well, you kissed me
And stopped me from shaking
And I need you today
Oh, Laney.....

Certain aspects will dominate in a free for all intersquad scrimmage — namely quick hands and feet. Players that slow the game down or play with more structure will suffer.
Sadly, the more structure there is and the less Slafkovsky look good. That is exactly why he strugled in Liiga.

Play in tournament is more open and he looks better in those situation.

I was at the development camp and yes some of you are right about certain player thriving on 4 on 4 hockey and certain situation. You also cannot evaluated a player with only a development camp viewing.
But if you watch continuously development camp, preseason game, season game, playoff game, you will be able to have a good read on a player. You also don’t have to just watch who wow’s you and have skills in these type of setting, there is other things to evaluated than hands, speed and shot.

Evaluating a player at a development camp thats you have not see is the same as evaluating a player that you have not see in an nhl game. Imagine scouting an unknown Ryan Poehling on is first nhl game.

Also the players that are Elite, they don’t have to always be with the best linemates, 5 on 5, with the best coach ect ect, go watch pro players summer hockey, they are all good but Elite NHL player will pop off in summer hockey, development camp, preason game, season game and playoff game.

Coming back from Brossard,

Slafkovsky is a monster, I was worried to maybe see a KK today but for those who were worried about that I can assure you Slaf is two leagues over KK. The guy is strong on his skates, good vision, excellent hands in short space, good and accurate shot, he even did the move between the legs but got stopped. I was skeptical but now I love the pick.

Farrell, his vision hands and passing abilities are a notch over everyone, I don’t think he is far from the NHL honestly, don’t think he will go AHL.

Hutson, one of the most surprising prospect, his skating reminded me of Mete back in the days, think Mete with hands and vision. Looked sharp in 1 vs 1

Beck, I had to talk about him, I think he will be a top 5 prospect for us by the end of the year, he is def one of my favorite prospect, very good defensively and 1 vs 1, good vision, good hands, excellent hockey IQ

Dichow, was the best G, by far the most athletic in our system.

Roy and Kidney, looked good but another year working on execution will do wonder for them

Forgot about Heineman, he looks already NHL ready, I mean his puck protection and shot are really good, you look at him and he has that vibe that he will play in the NHL.

Didn’t notice him a lot, you can see he has good hands but he has to put some weight on. Again it’s only pratice 3 vs 3, 4 vs 4. Would like to see him in a scrimmage.
Thanks - great posts - I love insights like this!!

As Farrell ever shown any inclination of testing the free market now that he's confirmed he's staying in college for a final year? It was expected but he confirmed it today. Just wondering.
Wasn't last year his freshman year?

Gretzky was the smartest player in the offensive zone that ever lived. But it's still a fact that the early 80s was the worst era of all-time in terms of goalies, and defenses were very bad. The league was watered down and that's why offense exploded. High offensive league is a sign of a weak league, not quality, despite many thinking the opposite. If he had played in 1955-1967 some things he did wouldn't have passed muster. His coaches would not have allowed him to be so weak defensively. Quality of depth players was much higher and level of play too.
Interesting stat - Gretzky was the highest point scorer in the 80s and also the highest point scorer in the 90s

The 90s were not a monolithic block. The early part was still super offensive, the latter part was the dead puck era. Gretzky was still in his late-prime in the first half of the 90s, when offense was still all the rage. Plus, Mario Lemieux always being injured is the only reason why Gretzky led the 90s in scoring; that, and Jagr peaking in the dead puck era.

How was Roy? I was expecting him to standout.

From the scrimmage I watched, he didn't really stand out. I didn't really notice him. That shouldn't be an indication of the player he will become. But he was not among the Farrels, Slafs, Hutsons, Mesars, Kidneys, Nurmis & Engstroms that were mostly the stand outs.

I'll even add Trudeau, who ironically is on the wrong end of a highlight reel from camp, he still looked good, I'm a fan of Trudeau's since I saw him last year at the rookie camp.
