From Streit to Subban to Mete to Hutson. Will never end.

What does Streit and Subban have to do with this? They are nowhere near as small as Hutson. Let me guess, you think you can have undersized D and still win a cup?

Let Hutson develop as a defenseman but do we really think he will turn the needle in our own end in the playoffs if we are a contender down the road?

The next Krug? We will see. Until then, let him develop but after he turns pro and possibly struggles with dealing with bigger forwards in the NHL, it's something to consider if his skating/skill if off the charts. He can still play PP QB but forward at 5/5.

This would be amazing.
Brian Rafalski was an undrafted 5'9 D who carved out an excellent career.

Jared Spurgeon in Minnesota is 5'9' and 167 lbs.

He's had:

5 x 20+ point seasons
3 x 30+ point seasons
2 x 40+ point seasons

So in his career, he's put up at least 20 points in 10 seasons. Put up at least 30 points in 5 seasons. And put up at least 40 points twice.

And he's had 5 x 10+ goal seasons.

If the Habs had 2 or 3 D around Hutson's size, I'd be worried. But on a team that could have a diminutive Hutson, they will have the big 6-foot+ and 200-pound+ D in Guhle, Xhekaj, Barron, Fairbrother, and Mailloux, among others.

You're dwelling on development camp too much. Are we really going to hear this over and over again every step along the way? Can you at least wait till December

Read the whole thread or don't reply, its annoying. I replied to someone that said Slaf "Show more today than Glachenyuk and Kotkaniemi ever did". I watched the whole thing, did you ?

Its just ridiculous expectations and ridiculous overhyping. Same dude who said that was overhyping Wright as the second coming a week ago.

I think you dislike Slafkovsky more than I dislike Anderson and that's really something lol

I don't dislike him at all. I actually like my big boys. It was just a ridiculous comment that I replied to, he didn't do much today and he certainly didn't "Show more today than Glachenyuk and Kotkaniemi ever did"

Said it on draft day but I'll reiterate again; Beck will be an NHLer, no doubt in my mind. He plays (hate this term) the "right way". Always seems to be in good position and plays an NHL style game. No fancy little kid junior plays, just smart decision making and positioning, with the skills to match.

People talk about him being the "safe pick" over DBB, but I feel that does Beck an injustice. Different kind of players for sure, but it was a good pick regardless.
Reminds me of Danault.

Good thing is Beck actually has a very good shot so he might stay on my good side.

It's very easy to see they targeted him as a player ready to make the jump this year. Not a doubt in my mind. It may also go a long ways towards putting the critics of that Toffoli trade to bed.
I think at the very least, he’d play a key role in Laval this year, but yeah. He’s got NHLer written all over him. I see him as a guy that’ll be comfortable anywhere in the top 9.

Ya, I kind of see the Danult comparison, that would be nice, I see more of a Bergeron :sarcasm:

I wanted him to do it against Kapanen, he didn't.

The great physical tools should be shining against such players, but theyre not. Whats gonna happen when he leans on Chiarot, Ekblad, Hedman, McAvoy, Sergachev, Cernak and other big defenders ? He's not going to magically get a strength boost, this isn't Dungeons and dragons.
Holy crap man you are so off your feed. When Slaf wanted the puck Guess What?

I thought it was a scrimmage, seems like they did the same as yesterday.

Slaf was good, I mean the puck protection and his hands are def his main asset. Everytime he touch the puck something happen.

Beck, I will continue to like this kid as the season progress. I am very high on him, he does everything well, seems like he always wants the puck and it stick on him. Good hockey IQ, I think a lot of teams will regret passing on him.

Hutson, great motor, always keep his feet moving, great vision, good shot, always seemed to be in front of the net and find the right pass all the time. Great mobility, huge upside.

Mesar, had a better pratice today, you can easily see the skills he has, good hands, good vision, good speed. A year or two to put some weight on and learn NA will do wonder for him.

Heineman, seemed too passive, always in retreat to wait for the puck, I thought maybe he was too calm? But once he got the puck he protects it good. Nice shot also.

Engstrom, was not looking at him necessarily but always found my eye caught him. Good speed and first pass, good defensive awareness and if develop properly could be a useful 5-6 D.

Tuch and Kapanen was kind of a deception for me, Tuch didn’t show a lot, always lurking near the net but I expected more from him as he is one of the strongest prospect. Kapanen I will give him a mulligan since he never played in a NA style of practice but he showed effort, the puck just didn’t glued on him.

He literally did protect the puck against him that's where the entire conversation started. He doesn't look like 96 Forsberg though you're right on that.

He protected the puck, but got nowhere with it. And thats quite the feat to, I repeat "Show more today than Glachenyuk and Kotkaniemi ever did".

Anyway, shiny new toy syndrome is out in full force lol.

If I had to pick a best 5 from that ...

1. Mesar
2. Heineman
3. Hutson
4. Beck
5. Engstrom

But Nurmi would have absolutely been #6.

Kapanen looked good too and Id have Farrell in there.

Fair. I'm paying attention but not going to put too much value into development camp. It's an interesting camp to test them in certain situations but the results come from what they learn and how much they work at any potential flaws.

Is Kidney there? I recall him having a rough camp last year.

That was a huge load of talent on display, beautiful to see.

I'll say one thing about TT and MB, their overall grades on the draft were not good. But since 2017 or 2018, I'd say they've been drafting well. To the point the cupboards have been filled and we have interesting prospects to look forward to.

They're the duo that brought the Habs prospects like Caufield, Suzuki (via trade), Harris, Guhle, Fairbrother, Roy, Kidney, Dobes, Dichow, Norlindrer Struble, Xhekaj, RHP, Ylonen, and Mysak to name a few.

And then this management goes and brings in Barron, Heineman, Slaf, Mesar, Hutson, Beck, Engstrom, and we know more will be coming.

Yes he's there, he wasn't very noticeable.

They drafted well before, well TT did, they just got very unlucky on injuries. Scherback, Reway and Brook all looked like they had NHL careers ahead of them.

I cannot stop smiling at all that talent on the ice. The best part is we have 2 1st round picks next year too. 🤤

People said similar things during Bergevin years but this seems different. Good thing too as we all know the results from his drafting tenure. Still remember seeing shootouts/3 on 3s going for long period of times with little to show. Now we are seeing things during drills.

Juulsen, too :(

5 - 8 is Not NHL Dman size .
What part is so hard to fathom.?
It's not unheard of either. Ryan Ellis was drafted at 5'9" and did mighty fine (now listed at 5'10), Spurgeon is still 5'9", Krug is still 5'9"... The list isn't 60 deep, but it's no empty either.

Plus, that's discounting the whole medical context around Hutson which could see him gain an inch or three in the coming years.

The person you replied to is replying to someone else joking about how whenever a dman shows offensive skill people want to convert them to a winger. They are not complaining about Hutson being small.
