Detroit Redwings Downfall

And here is why it's dangerous to claim prospects are sure things before they even get a taste of the show... Cossa rocking a .778 save percentage tonight in his NHL debut. Will this, along with what looks to be another loss, humble our dear friends from Michigan? Stay tuned on the next episode of The Yzerplan, season 6!
1st goal against no 1 would b able to stop, 2nd goal maybe prime hasek might have but was a near impossble stop to make. but nice troll job

Look at 2022. He went out and overpaid for a bunch of UFAs, and brought in Copp, Chiarot, Perron, etc. They proceeded to finish just 5 points ahead of Philly, and those 5 points were the difference between getting Michkov and Danielson. What puts Detroit in a better place right now, Chiarot, Copp, and Danielson or Michkov and close to 10 million in capspace? That’s what people are criticizing Yzerman for.
It's a strawman though. Not only can you play that game for every team (Vancouver could have had Michkov+Pellikka instead of Hronek), you're arguing that Ben Chiarot, with his GF% of 35%, was worth multiple standings points above replacement level and making a lot of assumptions about what would have happened at the draft or what the final outcome of the 2023 draft looks like. Right now you can argue that every single team that passed on Michkov would have been better off drafting him - why is Yzerman the focus of criticism?

Michikov didn't want to be drafted by Capitals or Coyotes. Apparently he wanted to play in Philly and there was a secret meeting.

Sounds like a potential character flaw to me. Yzerman has zero toleration for poor character. Look how fast he exiled both Vrana and Walman.
lol like Jagr’s “character flaw”? Or Gretzky, Elway, Manning or Bo Jackson? All world class athletes who used what leverage they had at their disposal to try to exercise some control over their career… has nothing to do with “character”.

I saw Steve Yzerman at a grocery store in Clinton Township, MI yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
Any more imaginary stories, about chocolate bars, are you ok?

I met Pizza!Pizza! at McDonalds and asked him why do you eat burger? He was truly taken aback to the beginning of his origin as his face soured into a pile of dough.

Congrats to Cossa on his first win. I'm not rooting for anyone to fail, hope he kills it. If he sticks and is as advertised, one less thing for the rebuild to worry about.

Well, we are a long way from not having to worry about that but it was good story see him take live NHL fire. For the current plan trajectory to work, excellent goaltending and excellent top4 d are a must.

Looked to me like you would expect a goalie making his NHL debut coming in cold to look.

The first goal, he was out of position on the rebound, but I still can't tell when or where the deflection happened. Don't know if he overplayed the original shot, simply caught leaning wong way trying to find it through traffic, or perhaps it was a much bigger deflection than I can see and it was a good play just to get a pad on it in the first place.

The second goal, seems like he made a good play, but a bit-mis timed, and something that would be fine after adjusting to NHL game.

He got beat pretty clean on the break away post, was good in shoot out (which I don't care about too much - no shootouts when the games really matter).

He made some good saves in the 2nd, in particular at least one really nice one moving to his left on a shot from point blank range.

All in all a good, not great debut, all things considered.

With a win? It wasnt pretty but im sure he's stoked that he actually got in and helped win it.
With a time machine I suppose i could've been more accurate. At the time, his debut consisted of being brought in cold while his team was losing. No rookie lap. I imagine he thought it might have looked differently for his first NHL game? I doubt many would want that as their first NHL game to be honest. I even read a stat that he's the first guy ever to come in mid game and win a shootout for his first victory. It's definitely not the norm.

Glad he got the win. I'm reading a lot about what a hero he was. 12 saves and .857 over 45 minutes is definitely a win but I'm not sure I'd call it a great debut? Hoping the next one is an announced start and a full 60 minute game! I do think he'll be a great goalie in a few seasons.

Lol, good post bro

Raymond, Larkin, Edvinsson, Seider were incredible in this game. Edvinsson is provably sneaking under the radar this year for a lot of people. More EVP than Lane Hutson who has his own 50 page thread.

Yep, and Edvinsson has some of the best defensive numbers in the league. Seider Edvinsson is one of the best pairings in the entire league and no one wants to talk about it because a bun.ch of posters have made themselves look stupid the last two years saying Seider sucks. Anyone who actually watched hockey knew he was a number one damn already, Edvinsson might already be better than Seider...

Hm, that’s a bad take I think. Raymond is, if anything, a game breaker. He’s shown it his whole career, both internationally and with his teams
There were lots of people quick to jump into this thread when Raymond was snake bit to start the year too. Kinda like the people calling Seider overrated last year, Raymond is on this year now and all these posters have their heads buried in the sand. Funny how that happens

He was thrown in a losing situation being down a goal. The other goalie gave up 3 goals on 7 shots.

He battled back and helped the team win, when they should have lost. I would say the stats you posted are as meaningless as Fabian Brunnstrom scoring a hattrick his first NHL game.

At the end of the day Cossa is happy, the team is happy, and the fans are happy. It is a pleasant situation watching kids develop before our eyes, then seeing the player being an important part of his first NHL win. Nobody is saying he stood on his head Hasek style. He just came in cold, down a goal in a losing situation and made some key saves. The team in front of him played with more confidence because of it.

He got his first (well earned) W. Hopefully one of many many more to come!

2026/2027 appears to be the line drawn in the sand, that is when all the placeholder contracts end. If you look at the rebuild objectively you can see there is a clear path and looks like it being executed nicely.

Yzerman just needs a few of ASP, Buchelnikov, Lombardi, Danielsson, Cossa, MBN to pan out and be real difference makers. If all those kids bust then I will start evaluating why.

So far many of those kids look really, really good in their respective development leagues!

What are we to do until then?

If the timeline is 2026/27 to just make the playoffs or semi-compete why even bother with the placeholder contracts and not just improve draft position? Is there no possibility for you that some things just didn’t work out as planned?
This, 100%.

Which was my entire point when it happened. It's not an ideal rookie goalie debut spot. The fact, 2 hours later, he won is great. Happy for him.

I think this is pretty much fantasy hockey attitude. In the real world being bottom feeders often messes with the heads of the prospects. Wrong motivators, bad habits, etc. I think leaving winning culture for later will bite you in the arse more often than not. So, these aren't placeholder contracts, it's making sure the team has the depth to play meaningful games.

As for not all things working out as planned, duh. Some things not working out is a given. That said, I would be surprised if those contracts somehow line up to a magic date/season. I mean, Wings could have made the playoffs last season, and aren't out of it this season either. The contract length is just a product of competing for these players against other teams, trying to do your best not to overdo term/contract.
