I see it as asset management. Shattenkirk had a strong preference to sign with the Rangers, they hardly backed up a brinks truck to his front door. Traded Stepan and their backup goalie for a top ten pick and a young talented defenseman. They play under the same salary cap as everyone else.
The people constantly overdoing every Staal mistake, forget the fact that like Girardi, he’s given the Rangers everything, but maybe the handful of rocket scientists learned something constantly putting Girardi down last season. Anyone notice how well he’s played for Tampa Bay this season? All the big mouths just went into hiding regarding that.
I’ll never forget something Gretzky said when he was retiring. He was complimenting the Ranger fan saying how all you had to do was give them an honest effort and they’d back you and maybe that was the case for him but in general it turned out to be nothing further from the truth. These veterans who’ve given the Rangers year after solid year, who lose a step with age, absolutely earned nothing with too many Ranger fans and it’s a disgrace.

Gretzky had 90+ points twice and then 62 in his final year. He wasn't exactly running around giving just effort on the ice.
