Probably means Veleno centering the third line, which is an upgrade.

He hasn't been playing well for weeks (-13 last 13 games), not to mention he looks horrible playing on the same line as Raz. They get pinned in their own zone too much. When Copp or Fischer are with them it gets even worse.

I was hoping for improvement, but I'm ready to throw in the towel on Joey and Raz. I don't think they're gonna be anything more than 4th liners with occasional 3rd line duties on a playoff team.

Next 9-10 game strech will pretty much determine the whole season.

We'll face 8 contenders on this stretch and also PHI and OTT, who have been total kryptonite teams for us.

You complete this with .600 record, and this team is REALLY something.

You lose miserably, you know the season and playoff race is pretty much over, when heading on the All-Star break.

But the team is almost full healthy, they seem finally found a better defensive structure and the winning goaltender. There's no injuries for skaters. Kind of, the excuses are gone.

This team is as good RIGHT NOW as it can be. So, let's play those 10 games and see where we are. I love the situation, when there's no excuses (like injuries or some vrana's at rehab etc). Now we will see how good they are.

Mentioned it in the other thread, at least 10 points needed of the 20 available before the break, if we want to stay in it. It can be done, a lot of those games are home.

LOL, I bust on Raz and Joey, and they both have their best game in 3 weeks or so. Copp still sucked though, yet he gets 2 or 3 more minutes of ice time than Joey or Raz. If the trend continues, that needs to change.

If Detroit goes 0.500 in this stretch I'll be happy.

LA hasn't been terrific lately. They can be beat but it'll be tough. They're on a 5 game skid. I expect them to get it together.
Edmonton can score but not defend. They can be beat. They've been on a 7 game win streak so they have to cool off sometime. Thinking 50/50 chance here.
We SHOULD have a win against Toronto this year (In Sweden). This is a team we can and should beat.
Florida and Bobrovsky have made Detroit look silly. Probably a loss.
Carolina can't defend like Carolina of yesteryear. They can be beat but it'll be tough. 50/50.
Tampa can't defend or goaltend like before. They can be beat.
Dallas is my pick out of the west this year. More than likely a loss.
Philadelphia is a team we SHOULD beat but just can't seem to play a complete game against. I'm 50/50.
Vegas is a tough out. Expecting a loss.
Ottawa has gotten into this team's head and Detroit needs to win big against these guys and exercise some demons.

This team is 10 ply and can't beat physical teams or any forechecking pressure. Also as soft as they are, they're also slow. It's a bad combo.

Anyways, the team is tied in points for a playoff spot but NJ and Caps have 2 games in hand, so they need more than .500 to catch up. The easier schedule in Feb doesn't mean much considering the team doesn't do all that well against crap teams. Barely beat the Ducks, only because Lyon played realgud even after letting in an early goal. (Horrible bounce on that goal, I think the league is microwaving the puck instead of freezing it this year, lol.)

The wings also have a 4 day break which is much needed. Many teams in the league have games in hand on Detroit which works in our favor as the season rolls on. More breaks, fewer games played. The wings haven't had it easy in November and December.

I feel like it's January and I still have no idea how good this team is or not.

It's not as bad as Gniwder or Shanahanman think it is.
It's not as good as Henkka and I think it is.

The team is the best it's been since 2015. Still a lot of progress to be made but it's trending up. I think if the team gets their shit together they'll contend for a 6-8 spot in the east and that's not nothing. The east is a really, really strong conference this year.

Lyon getting a majority of starts seems like something that puts us in a much better spot than we were.

Everything else feels pretty inconsistent to me on a night by basis. As far as goals for, goals against, defensive coverage, etc.

Larkin has look pretty good and fired up these last 2 games. Kane adds a great stabilizing presence to the power play, IMO.

I would really love to see us move some bodies out on the blue line at the TDL, and bring Ed back up. I know people are going to cite that tiny sample of 2 games and say he's not ready, but I think we could really use that injection of youth/energy for the home stretch.

I partially agree. But I worry a little about Ed. He could be an all star. Or he could be another Broberg. 2 great shifts, then a shift right after that where he looks dumb as a rock and is exposed. I think that’s the bigger reason why he’s not up. The inconsistency in his game can be fatal.

I hate the new Perron on Larkin's line thing. Perron's effort level this season should see him getting lower minutes and lines, not getting more ice time.

Ed clearly has a lot of skill, but in his brief call up, I still see a guy that is raw in his defensive coverage, sometimes looking like he isn't sure where he should go.

Red Wings had an abysmal December 5-9-1 and they were 1 point off Ottawa's season total P% in that span.
11 points out of 30 = .366 P%
Ottawa on the season .400 P%
if we had went 5-8-2 = .400 P%

I think Lyon gives the best chance at a playoff spot, so I'm actually optimistic. Generally speaking, I don't wish injury on anyone, but Husso's injury works to an advantage because Fester is an idiot. I'd rather have Husso as the backup and not Reimer but it forces Fester's hand.

I'm just pointing out issues with the makeup of the team which is gonna prevent them from making any noise in the playoffs even if the team gets there. Soft and slow. The one thing that Fester can fix is the skating effort when the D gets caught up ice. They are all slow to skate back, even Seider. Probably why they're better when they play 7D, lower ice time for all of the D means better skating effort. The offensive scheme where the D is always active also means more skating for all of them.

In any case, the Wings are a bubble team. Nothing we say will change that.

Ed is a workhorse. He's never going to look as good as he can with minimal icetime. He needs to be up and never play fewer than 20 minutes.

And it's a tad hypocritical to point out inconsistency in a rookie when that's our D core to a f***ing T this year. If you're scared of playing Ed you should be terrified of the guys being trotted out there currently.

But these veteran defenseman are pretty inconsistent and spotty too. You aren't getting much better consistency out of guys like Petry and Holl and there is no "next level" to their game you might get either.

(for the record I am intentionally excluding Chiarot here)

It's a big leap to play 20 minutes in a full 82 game season, especially in a system where the defensemen have to skate more than usual. We're only midway through the season, and Seider and Walman are dragging ass sometimes.

Ed does need to be called up though, his brain farts aren't any worse than the current D as you said. I see him more as a John Carlson type player, his offense will make up for the defensive brain farts.

I just looked at the schedule, Toronto is an automatic loss because Rainbow will be in net for the B2B.

Im not saying they aren’t Inconsistent. Just that Ed has also been. I’d love to have him up , but you know…tie, veteran, etc.

What tie?

Our kids are being held to the standard of either forcing your way on to the top line/pairing or you ride busses in GR.

Lyon has been great, but I can't say I'm confident that a 31 year old journeyman who's never played more than 15 games is going to be able to sustain it consistently and especially when it counts. Because with how inconsistent the team defence has been, he's going to continue to be tested. Maybe he can do it, some goalies are just late bloomers. I just wouldn't bet on it. So if they're in a position where they're pushing for the playoffs come the deadline, I sure hope Yzerman can acquire an alternative that isn't Reimer or Husso.

I agree with this entirely, i've been on Lyon's side because he's been the best option of the 3, but I still don't like him as a long-term option and hope something else can get figured out. I don't see him suddenly carrying a team like this during playoffs at this state of his career. I've just been vocal on wanting him to get starts because he gives us the best chance to win in most games he plays from the guys we have.

He's played 30-40-50 games before. Just not all at the NHL level. Last year he played 42 games between 2 leagues.

Like last year ASP played 100 games. Spread out over 3 leagues and 4 tournaments with the highest number being 31 games in the J20 league.

Lower leagues shouldn't be lumped in with the NHL.
