Detroit Red Wings 23/24 season thread

If it's a matter of workload, games are games. Howard has gone on record that as a goalie he felt playing in the AHL was more difficult than the NHL.
It’s a matter of NHL workload. Again, you can’t compare it to lower leagues. I don’t doubt he’s physically capable of playing 50 games, but playing 50 games well at the NHL level is a completely different animal than playing 50 games well at lower levels. If it was a 1:1 conversion then Teemu Pulkkinen would’ve been a star.

I think it's a bit different for goalies than forwards, because you endure harder hits, have to skate harder, and the game is a lot quicker.

Of course, he will face harder shots, but has a much better defense in front as well.

The biggest difference might be the travel. Much better in the NHL.

I've noticed this season that there are at least 5-10 times a game that Wings players are taking passes while facing away from the flow of play, and then having to awkwardly turn around and skate down the ice. This often ends up resulting in a turnover. Is anyone else seeing this? It happens often enough that I'm wondering if it's a systems/coaching issue where they are being told to do this. It's really weird.

a bit off topic, but if anyone has a reliable way to view games a day or two later, can you drop me a message? I don't get to watch as many games as I'd like when they are on, but I wouldn't mind the option of catching up a day or two later.

Without a sub? Highly unlikely. With a sub ESPN+ is probably your best bet to get all but the TNT games after the fact. I pay $3/mo for ESPN+ (+ Hulu and Disney+ bundled).

We've kicked around getting that bundle, but we're about to get Hulu free from our cell phone company and I think we already get Disney from someone. Not sure we can manipulate that into someone else paying for a chunk of the bundle.

I think they recognize deals you get elsewhere if you combine the accounts. I didn't get the bundle outright as the initial purchase.

I got a discounted deal on ESPN+ cuz hockey at I think $6/mo. A couple months later GF wanted to get Hulu to watch a couple shows and there was a deal for $6/mo there. Then they were advertising the ESPN+/Hulu/Disney+ bundle for $12.99/mo and we thought, hey... for one extra dollar we get Disney. So I signed up. What they did is they stacked the percentage discounts of all of them for the end payment of $3/mo. So I'd say... if you've got a couple already... try the bundle and see what happens. It's been a year I think and I'm pretty sure I still just pay the $3/mo. Wait... I just checked... the bundle has been bumped up to $4/mo.

Just found out that our PK has been clearly NHL best at last 10 games. This stat came from nowhere, didn't notice it at all.

Top unit:
Copp - Compher
Walman - Seider

2nd unit:
Rasmussen - Larkin
Chiarot - Petry/Holl

Nothing new there, it's just same guys who have get it going, who suffered earlier in the season a bit.

PK GAA is NHL lowest 1.48 and they have conceded on only 1 goal in last 10 games. Also have scored one shorthanded goal by Larkin.

That PK xGA is 8th best.

Special teams have improved overall, PP GF is 13th best and xGF 8th best.

Both PK and PP are on better side of the league at last 10 games. Especially PK. This could be a key for winning lately.

If you look at the last 13 games, it's 2 GF/60 and 1 GA/60, which would lead to a lot of funny conclusions:

- The Wings allow fewer goals when on the PK than PP or ES
- The Wings have better stats during PK than ES (GF vs GA)
- Maybe Copp isn't entirely useless
- The PK is so awesome, the team should punch more opponents, instead of punching F1 and taxi drivers. Being shorthanded is an advantage, lol.

Yeah...

Was just looking and comparing to Canucks, who still have insane puck luck with 105.2 PDO, when does that team come down?

They are kind of at 50% at 5-on-5 xGF, but have 60% GF%.

Red Wings are not far away, we are 48% at 5-on-5 xGF, GF being at same level at last 10 games. Not high as the first season games.

But our current key to wins is this 50-50 play at ES, and special teams. PK is winning it for us, and PP doing a "half-favor".

I really like this trend. PK should always be a strength. It always has been a strength for any contender on long run.

Copp was 100% PK player on JFresh stats, when he was signed. I have always expected that prime PK from him. Compher good PK guy too. Walman and Seider have never been good PK guys. Think they are the ones who have developed to be better, than they ever were.

Half way through and the Wings are 2 points out of a wild card spot. With all the ups and downs, I think alot of fans would be happy with them having a chance. Still long way to go , and more ups and downs but there's the chance our defense improves and we stabilize a bit. Happy with the way they have got 7 of the last 8 after the season looked like it could go off the rails.

Oh and Ottawa lost again.

I watched the last game live from the start of the 2nd period (from my bed and was very tired because i had to go to work like 1hour after the game ended). One thing i simply cannot understand, and it probably didnt affect the score but i still have to bring it up: What was Chiarot doing like 1:20 left or something, dude had all the time in the world and decided to lob a 10meter high pass (something like 30feet for you guys) to the opposing blueline?? Trying to go some kind of hail mary breakout pass or what? AND he also fumbled the puck on the blueline late in the game and was skating towards the Red Wings end and eventually just tried to jam it along the boards and lost it (i actually think this was after that lob pass but i just woke up before so might be wrong).

IF and i dont understand why you ever had to put Chiarot on the ice in the final minutes, please someone in the coaching staff tell him that THIS IS NOT THE TIME YOU MAKE THE OFFENSIVE PLAYS. Im so tired watching this dude dump it and chasing it, you have no hands, just make the easy first pass and play defence.

I actually dont hate Chiarot as a defender, but the thing i hate is that he seems to forget that he is a defender, and not Erik Karlsson type, but more like give to puck to anyone else type.

End of rant.

On pace for 90 points which is pretty much dead-on what I predicted this season.

Yeah but that includes games where Compher, Larkin, and Lyon were out with injuries.

I think they still have a decent shot at the playoffs if everyone stays healthy.

That's the old Larry Murphy lob to clear the zone. Ericsson did it a lot as well. It's the "safe" play which gives time for the defense to reset, line change if necessary, while avoiding an icing call. I'm not a big fan either because it gives the opponents puck possession, though there are times where it's the right decision. (Not sure which exact play you're talking about, the Wings pitchforked the puck a few times late in the game.)

After this week, the Wings won't have to travel again until Feb 13th.(Except for D-Cat, who has the short trip to Toronto for the All Star game).

Lots of home and family time coming up, nice little rest spot before the final 2 month push.
