Detroit Red Wings 23/24 season thread

Thing is, most playoff contenders like to add depth come trade deadline, but they Wings already have that. If the Wings buy, I believe it will be more for a bona-fide star, if one is even available.

There are three teams that have yet to play any rookies this season. We are one of them. The other two are Carolina and Dallas.

At this point in the rebuild, it seems weird to not ease the rookies in.
Boston of all teams has had five rookies play this season. And they've all played 10+ games.

Ed is the only one that's NHL ready, I think he'll get promoted later this season. It'd be an easier move if the team wasn't carrying 3 goalies.

3 goalies isn't the issue. It's the 4 3rd pairing D.
There's only 2 teams carrying 3 goalies. Most teams carry 2 extra D or F, not 2 extra G.

It won't hurt Ed to get a few more games in GR, but it doesn't make sense not to play your best lineup when the team is on the edge of making the playoffs. I think Stevie will sort it out in January. If he's still in GR come February, I'll join you in whining about it every day, lol.

I wish someone would have asked about Ed to Lalonde or Yzerman at their press conferences.
They been bullshit coy with the answer all season long.

"We've got 7 NHL defensemen."

But ignoring that one of those 7 is Ed and not the 7 they have on the roster.

Believe it or not, more than half the teams in the league have a defenseman on the roster that's worse than Petry.

McIlrath, Oesterle, Stecher, Staal, Merrill, Brendan freakin' Smith, DeHaan, Ben Hutton, Dermott. Burroughs, Old Man Goligoski, and Jan Rutta have all played NHL games this season.

Fact of the matter is, the team has 8 NHL defensemen and only 7 spots. Stevie needs to make a move sooner or later, hopefully sooner. And Petry should be 7D that only plays when someone is injured.

I do agree, but other than Edvinsson are there any kids banging the door down? I think he's the only one in play at the moment, so it's not like we're holding a bunch of kids back.

Yeah, I agree that Ed is the only one banging on the door. He's the only one that could come up and play significant minutes.
I don't think AlJo is that far behind either. He's been pretty good this year, but he's trades and injuries away from playing in the big league.

I don't see any forwards making any immediate impact, Carter Mazur maybe, but he's not banging any doors yet.

Ghost is top 20 in defense scoring and 4th in team scoring. He's as much a 3rd pair D as Compher is a Copp clone.

Johansson has been unspectacular but solid in Grand Rapids from what I saw this year. Kind of like a smaller Nick Jensen as a guy with tremendous skating and ability to transition. His shot is pretty good which makes me think he could score 10 a year as a defenseman.

I also wonder if he's got some utility as a 3rd/4th line winger in a pinch.

Petry, Chiarot, Maatta, Holl.

I didn't say 5 3rd pairing D.

Even then I'd flip Ghost for whatever in a heartbeat if it meant opening up a spot for Edvinsson.

I still think poor man's Djoos. Won't make it in the NHL, teams will use the same tactics, just pressure him with checks until he starts treating the puck like a hot potato. That's what happened with Djoos.

Yeah...well...YOU'RE a 3rd pairing D!
I wish I made $3M/year.

So, Kostin's name has been brought up a few times in the Kane thread as the guy to sit if we have too many forwards. His name was brought up on the trade forum (by another team's fan) as struggling and a guy that could use a change of scenery.

He looks to be a fancy stat darling. Among Red Wings' forwards, he is:
4th in CF%
4th in FF%
6th in SF%
4th in GF%
2nd in xGF%
1st in SCF%
1st in HDCF%

So why the disparity? Too small of sample size? He's an accepted anomaly where the eye test doesn't match? Fancy stats are dumb? I'm dumb and don't understand advanced stats? There is about to be a brawl between advanced stats truthers and old school hockey watchers?

Everything I've heard about AlJo is that he has an incredibly high panic threshold. The thing I can see holding him back is his own confidence.

I don't have any issues with him when he plays. Not sure what I'm missing either.

Kostin generally seems to be activity adjacent. He's stepped up a couple times recently. But in general he's been behind the play. If his foot speed were a hair better he'd be more involved.

lindstrom

Just waive petry if he doesn't want to be traded and send him down to GR...i'm sure he will be open to a trade at that point. Use Maatta in the trade for hanifin and keep holl as the guy who cycles in and out.
