I thought Lindholm was pretty unnoticeable offensively but he backchecked really well. It's his first game with basically no preseason. Pretty average first game for a rookie.

I thought Lindholm at least looked positionally sound. I like his skating. He already looks to be one of the better skaters on the team. But he did really struggle once the puck was on his stick, which is pretty weird because that is one of his strengths. I think a lot of it had to do with first game jitters. I saw nothing to be discouraged about.

Murphy had a few times where he got pinned in his own end, but like a few people have already said, he's one of our few d-men who can make a breakout pass or skate it out of the zone. He wasn't bad at all though. I thought he was solid for the most part.

The thing that is going to be unfair to him, and I'll be guilty of it, is he's going to be compared to some pretty great prospects that were taken in the top 10. Monahan seems to be playing great and Nich is going to be effective with his physicality and is putting in alot of minutes for Dallas already.

3.

We haven't won a home opener in 5 years, not counting the Helsinki games.

Fun fact, the two post-lockout home-opening wins we've had are also the same two years we made the playoffs.

Yeah, going to go with 5 years. The Helsinki game shouldn't count. Our real home opener that season was against Washington, which we lost 3-0.

Disappointing result, but not a disappointing effort. For 40 minutes, we outplayed the Red Wings and we got a point I honestly wasn't expecting.

A couple notes:

1. First and foremost...Justin ****in' Faulk. If he plays every game like he did tonight, he'll definitely be grabbing some national attention. 2 assists, which pale in comparison to the 2 absolute defensive gems he had. Stoned a Datsyuk 2-on-1 after the first goal and had a key breakup late in the 3rd. He's a special player.

2. Ward played well. He didn't really have a chance on any of the goals (the first being on Tlusty and the second being a cluster****).

3. Wasn't impressed by the first line tonight, which was disappointing. I'm going to chalk it up to being placed against Detroit's defensive players.

4. Gerbe's looking like another LaRose, both good and bad. Lots of energy, more physical than he should be for his size, and some questionable shot decisions.

5. The home uniforms still suck.

If that's how we play hockey all season, this team is going to be fine. Bummer to give up the extra attacker goal, but big picture, a lot of good things going forward.

Pretty much this. This was a good effort that will beat most teams on most nights.

Just not the Red Wings and not tonight.

Back at the hotel.

I thought Lindholm did well for his first game. I think with Skinner / Dvorak vs Bowman / Sutter as linemates would make him more noticeable.

Murphy, that kid can flat out skate, he messed up a shot on that power play.

Cam made some unbelievable saves.

Eric was start of the season Eric.

Jordan needs Ruutu back on his wing. Gerbe / Jordan / Ruutu will be a nice line.

Nash winning that face off against Pavel was awesome. Nash made a lot of good plays, just doesn't have a great shot.

Dvorak and Gerbe dumpster diving was a steal.

I like my Semin Away Jersey, I think it's my favorite now.

Once Ruutu is back:

Tlusty / Eric / Semin
Gerbe / Jordan / Ruutu
Skinner / Lindholm / Dvorak
Sutter / Nash / Dwyer

I thought the Canes deserved the win tonight. They really contained the Wings top line and top PP unit well.

I also wish the Wings had some of the speed you guys have in your line-up, I suspect it will cause the Wings a lot of trouble in the rest of the games between them this year.

Anyways good luck against the Flyers in your next one.

Positive:
Team defense was exceptionally better compared to last season. The new signings up front had a large part in that. This is a legitimate team instead of 1 line, Skinner, and Jordan.
Justin Faulk in particular was beasting it. If he keeps that up he's not just a #1 dman but should be a lock for the Olympic team, we really have something special in that kid.
Skinner-Nash-Dvorak is a nice 3rd line to have, very effective out there.
Gerbe continues to be everywhere.
Cam looked like mid-season Cam rather then the usual 5 months of rust Cam.
Bellemore is going to be hard to take out of the lineup when Gleason comes back if he keeps playing that way.

Negatives:
Too many missed opportunities, notably the post hits. Easily could have been a formality at 3-1 multiple times in the 3rd.
Can not try to let Detroit come at you in the 3rd. They'll score and equalize, in a hurry. Amazed we held out as long as we did, which sucks because the Canes were the better team through the first 40.
Bowman and Sutter aren't really effective linemates for Lindholm. Maybe try Dwyer on that RW slot once Ruutu is back?

Our PK has gotten a lot better recently. Yet for some reason our PP stays the same.

Once Ruutu is back:

Tlusty / Eric / Semin
Gerbe / Jordan / Ruutu
Skinner / Lindholm / Dvorak
Sutter / Nash / Dwyer

And if Malhotra impresses the organization enough to sign him to an NHL contract...

Tlusty-Eric-Semin
Gerbe-Jordan-Ruutu
Skinner-Nash-Lindholm
Dvorak-Malhotra-Dwyer (or whichever of the two wingers is willing to play on the left)

Bowman, Sutter, Westgarth
