Contract Termination: [DET] Red Wings terminate contract of F Filip Zadina

VAN fans really the only ones who can laugh here.

MTL reached for KK. Then didn't match him. Then took a guy with some personal issues who openly said don't draft me.

OTT didn't take Zadina, but still took a consensus Top 4 player at number 4, so nothing risked there.

AZ reached hard for Hayton because the OG Stat Boy (Chayka) loved his metrics.

DET was pegged to take Hughes and had what they perceived as a consensus Top 4 fall in their laps.

It's VAN that gets to laugh for Hughes suddenly being hot-potatoed to them.
You're not a Hab fan so you don't get the joke. This lady made that face when we picked KK instead of Zadina and she was absolutely shocked.

Should have bought him out.

2023-24 $375,000
2024-25 -$525,000
2025-26 $380,000
2026-27 $380,000

Or just waive him. A team takes him and you get no cap hit. Or he clears and you can bury $1.15M for a $700k cap hi for 2 years, and continue to hope he puts it together. They don't need the cap this year, and that is only $175k savings next year. Buying him out would be the worst move.

I watched the draft and followed the stories going into it. I get the joke lol.

Best decision Yzerman has made all off-season which is honestly pathetic. Zadina sucks.
It's kinda funny watching people lose their minds because a GM with $30M+ in cap space spent $20M to add to depth that was sorely missed.

And didn't haphazardly throw away any draft picks in the trade market to do it.

You didn’t add “depth”. You added horrific bums

Likely not related but could Detroit save the 1.1 by sending Zadina down then fit Debrincat at 8 mil ?

They have an extra 1st plus other picks they can offer

Could Ottawa use Kubalik and Valeno ?

I would think a buyout makes more sense next summer if they exhausted all options to try move him over the next year.

I'm assuming that in shopping Zadina, Yzerman has found that teams want the Wings to retain, add a sweetener or take back bad salary in exchange and Steve is trying to avoid all that.

This Van fan isn’t laughing. I’m considering us incredibly lucky Det took him instead of Hughes because we def would have Zadina otherwise. The Benning years were dark enough, Detroit saved us on this one.

Then you bury his contract in the AHL and get $1.15M in cap relief. Take the rest of the cap on the chin this year and next. This year they have plenty of cap space. Next year its not much more compared to the buy out. And you don't have years 3 and 4 cap hits at all.

If Detroit was trading for DeBrincat it probably would've been done prior to the draft.

I seriously doubt they're carrying 14 forwards right now because they intended to add Debrincat.

I don't even understand it then. Although I am not sure they buy out amount. But why spread the cost out for twice as long when you can bury well over half the cap in the AHL. There is no point buying out a player with that low of cap unless you are a budget team and want to save real cash. I don't think that's detroit.

Because Zadina is under 26, the buyout is only 1/3 of the remaining salary. Which means a cap hit of 1/6 his salary for twice the remaining term.

Zadina is Due $1.83 and $2.73 mill over the next 2 seasons. So $4.56 mill total. Buyout is only $1.52 mill in real cash. Thus an average dead cap of $380K, I think they even get a cap credit since they took over $900K in higher cap charges from 22/23 season.

Detroit doesn't need cap relief this year or next year.

Zadina got the good faith of a three year deal he wanted, was given every opportunity to succeed and didn't. Now he wants to be traded, but can't because he got the deal he wanted.

This is essentially Yzerman saying, "You either want to be in the NHL or you don't. And if you do, start f***ing playing like it."

Zadina, Cholowski, Svechnikov… Wings just can’t escape the wrath of Ken Holland

Svech was an absolutely perfect third liner for us last year. Showed that he can work well in thaf role while also providing sparks of offense and defense. Injuries have done him in in recent years so Im very sure he has more to show us. I Love Svech!!

He basically got the red wings scouting department fired. Whomever believed in him isn’t there anymore. No reason to believe in a sunk cost. His nhl career is on very thin ice.

Because of that huge difference in his salary and AAV for 24/25, his buyout caphit is actually negative for that season.
