I think he gets picked up. Not a huge risk.

Works out? He's still an RFA.

Doesn't work? Got him on waivers.

Alternative outcomes:

1. Goes to Grand Rapids.
2. Traded. Yzerman attaches something to him in this case. I wouldn't expect something huge, depth player or late pick added to Zadina, but yeah.

All I got.

Feel bad for the guy. He's a hardworking player, just got put on waivers because nobody would trade for him.

Holland really screwed over the Wings before he left

2018 - Zadina 6th overall
2017 - Rasmussen 9th overall
2016 - Cholowski 20th overall (traded down from 15th [Chychrun] to dump Datsyuk's contract)
2015 - Evgeny Svechnikov 19th overall

This is considered blasphemy and an irrelevant excuse according to the HFB hivemind's narrative, so be careful.

But yes, you're right. At least Rasmussen has been salvaged and became a decent player last year.

I think it’s just all the hilarious mystique people have built around Yzerman throughout the years. Any minor fumble is going to result in some mockery.

For the record I think he’s a good GM, but it’s funny.
Ya he has overpaid a lot players the last few years.

Habs should claim him

He can't "fill their nets with pucks" if he plays for them :D

Oh but you're wrong. Playing for the Canadiens is probably where he'd be best postured to "fill the Habs net with pucks".

Anyway...weird career. Feels like it kind of peaked when he had that really good showing as an underager at his first U18s. All the hand-wringing as he "fell" on draft day.

Definitely curious to see if anybody wants to put themselves on the hook for a pretty expensive reclamation project. There are certainly teams out there who have the room, both on their roster and under the cap. But will they want to spend that money? Will they bother?

Ah, I get it now. You've never actually watched him play before. That explains everything.

As I'm starting to get the sense that you're a new hockey fan, let me educate you a bit. Zadina has actively gotten worse over the past 4 years. In fact "Zadina" and "potential" is loosely speaking, an oxymoron.

"Not like he's unplayable"

He actually kind of is unplayable for anyone who is even remotely trying to get better. Maybe Chicago has a spot for him because otherwise he's an AHLer.
Ya done being a crybaby? Guess not lol.

I feel like someone would have thrown even a conditional 7th at Det for him. Honestly, kind of surprised he didn’t go the other way in the Yamamoto/Kostin deal.

Never mind, didn’t realize he was making 1.8 for two years.
If the Oilers were gonna add 1.8m of nothing, they woulda just paid Kostin 2m.

Why? Where would we play him?
I don’t know I didn’t look that far into it. Just thinking of a one time top prospect getting a potentially better role on a team with no cap concerns. If he benefits from the change we have another young player for no risk and no cost.

I feel this should be obvious Anaheim should grab him

Why would Anaheim grab him? They don't need more soft skill, especially as a reclamation project. They're trying to get bigger, tougher, more defensively responsible. Also seem to have plenty of players in the mix anyway.

To me, Chicago seems like a landing spot. They've got the roster spot and the cap space, they can afford to tinker around with a reclamation project that once looked super skilled. Unlike Arizona, they probably also have the cash to deal with his cash money $$$ salary exceeding his cap hit by a decent amount over the next two years.

St.Louis also seems like a candidate to me. A bit like they took a flyer on Kapanen and that worked out pretty decent for them. Winnipeg also jumps out to me as a place that might take it as an opportunity to grab some free "skill" in a place where their roster has lost a fair bit of it recently, and don't necessarily do amazingly well in the free agent market or on NTC lists.

$4.56M for the next 2 seasons.

This. His backloaded contract could make him a potentially awkward claim for a lot of "budget teams".

what went wrong with this guy ? I rememeber that we wanted to draft him insted of KK ... that's why people were so upset .

Let me understand something...

Chicago gave up on Dach but they are going to pick up a long shot reclamation project.

Did I get yesterday right?

In my books at the time it was Zadina or Tkachuk. I thought that KK was suspect because of the hysteria over one tournament.

I was 2/3 right. Or actually 100% right on KK and 50/50 on Tkachuk/Zadina.

I kind of see him clearing at this point. Yzerman was pretty brutally honest when explaining the outcomes and why we got here during his presser today. I did think he defended his character and added he believed Zadina could be something in the NHL. He did hint at nobody taking that contract though and what the outcome would be if/when that happens.

He is on waivers to do right by the player though. I am good with Yzerman doing that for him.
