He's been pretty damn good overall, I'd say.

Using Sv% as the sole criteria to judge a goalie is misguided.
While I agree on the SV% point, I’d be hard pressed to find an example of a goalie with a sub-.900 SV% who I’d say has been playing well, Binnington included. Sure he wasn’t a total disaster but he was definitely below average overall at best.

Never suggested it was. Benning was god awful. I said Yzerman was doing his best impersonation of him, which he has with some of his terrible signings. You really, need to work on your reading comprehension bud. The amount of dead cap Yzerman has in a year when there’s a lot of pressure to actually improve and make the playoffs is a bit comical.

Yzerman took over a team that was essentially devoid of talent, and has had to sign available UFAs to questionable contracts as band-aids to be able to ice a team without rushing his youngsters into service before they are ready or trading useful picks/prospects for short term pieces.

Benning took over a team that had made the Cup finals a couple years prior and still had some talent, and caused a bunch of self inflicted wounds that made the team worse. That is very different than overpaying for a couple of band-aids and having them fail to help stop the bleeding.

He has also made the team improve in every single season since 2019-2020. You can critisize him of bad signings, but he has not made the team worse with them. And in the case of Husso, it was mostly about his injuries that derailed his game. Had it not been Yzerman signing him, there was a line of other GM's ready and willing to do the same.

Players like Holl and Petry on the other hand... Or even the handling of Walman, where it's painfully obvious that just by dropping him to waivers would have resulted in him being taken by someone, if that was the goal.

He has made mistakes for sure, but all in all it feels like fans of other teams seem hell-bent in their jealousy of what the Wings used to be, that they're milking every single thing they can find just to be able to talk them down, all the while more often than not, their own teams do similar and at times even worse mistakes.

In the grand scheme of things, Yzermans legacy as a GM is still wide open and the only thing actually cementing it one way or another, is how he handles the team. Does he end up taking them to a legit contender status or does he end up getting sacked eventually. Until either of those happens, he's in the same pile of GM's that are trying to accomplish what everyone is; to win.

Let's make things clear. I'm not saying Binnington has been a disaster or anything. But I would hardly call him a very good starter. Bottom-average starter who can get hot and steal some games here and there thats getting progressively worse for every year. Even if he had one good advanced stat last season.

Yes, sv% as only criteria is misguided. So is one advanced stat like goals saved above expected.

I'm an old school Avs fan who still has an irrational hatred for the Red Wings and the city of Detroit as a whole, so it hurts me to say nice things about Yzerman, but he's doing an objectively good job so far in Detroit, given where the team was when he took over, and I don't think it's going to be much longer before I'll be able to root against them in the playoffs again. It might not be this year, or even next, but it's coming.

Not sure if it's the same for you, but Sakic is just about the only avs player from that era that I just can't find a bad thing to say about. Oozes class, much like Yzerman in his playing days. Would love nothing more than to be able to go head to head against the Avs once more even if the hatred of yesteryear is never again reached.

He's an above average starter and last year was top 10 easily and an argument to be made for top 5 or 6. Two years ago he was the best player on a horrible defensive team and has had a lot fewer rough patches than most non Blues fans realize. But this thread isn't about him so I won't push the issue.

There was a 6 month period where Husso outplayed Binner, which was the worst stretch of his career, but that's it.

Did you have a stroke?

Also, Detroit has Talbot and Lyon. They do not need Primeau.
Wings use depth in net. Neither of them are great

We call up Dobes who is better than Primeau. Husso is sent down. Gives us depth in Laval. We retain on him at deadline get another late round pick. Habs have ton of caproom.

We gain a first. Wings gain 4 million caproom and a young goalie.

Detroit already have 7 goaltenders under contract.

I doubt they want to carry 3 goalies in the NHL all year.

You won't get much if anything for Husso even at 50% and you would be using up our last retention slot for that.

Dobes needs playing time, not bench time.

You really need to work on not making ignorant comparisons. It was blown out of the water rather swiftly.
Blown out of the water? Benning made several good moves as a GM, his trade for JT trump's any trade Stevie made. Drafting is similar between the two with Benning ahead since his picks were part of a core that won the pacific but things could change.

You also left out a bunch of other pieces like Garland an a bunch of contract dumps and retention.

You purposely being misleading hardly blew anything out of the water, except maybe some credibility lol

Wow. That is a terrible take. Watch more than highlights. Binnington has been the bright spot on the team for the past two season. Easily the reason we didn’t pick in the top 5 for the past two years.

The Wings have two young goalies in the wings (Augustine and Cossa). They have four goalies at the NHL/AHL level (Husso, Talbot, Lyon, Campbell). They also have Gylander and Gage Alexander kicking around the system too.

The Wings have abso-f***ing-lutely no need for a young goalie. And there are not words for how much they don't need one at the cost of their first round pick.

Come on man, you gotta think about what the other team actually needs when you make proposals.

Wings don't actually need caproom. They'll be fine when it comes back around. They don't have any dire contracts to extend next year that they're unprepared for. lll
