Despite major challanges, Kyle Dubas has passed the tests

We didn't need an AHL grinder. He wasn't working his way up. He was stagnating as a mediocre AHLer in his mid 20s. We even gave him a trial in the NHL - which was more than he had earned - and he wasn't good enough. He was about to be lost to waivers, or soon after, UFA. We took the opportunity to get something for him, instead of losing him for free. It's a standard exchange of depth pieces that any GM would do; not a representation of whatever incorrect narrative you want to build about Dubas.
But man did you see him in the playoffs this year

When Dubas has stuck to his vision of speed and skill and tenacity, it's worked. When he made moves that satisfied the traditional thinking, its backfired.
show your work.

our best speed and skill was inherited by dubas and we seem to be getting slower and slower with him in charge......

nobodies going to support you that dubas' bad moves are the publics fault. Island by yourself there. dubas wanted those guys because he wanted them not because 1 or 2 guys you fight with on the internet wanted them

Dubas was gifted easily the greatest goal scorer in Leafs history. Perhaps the best playmaker winger too. Still our top D man. Elite second line winger. You couldn’t ask for a more fortuitous situation to build around, literally the hardest pieces to get. He‘s been fine in some regards, but come on, every would be GM would salivate at the opportunity he was afforded. The fawning is embarrassing.
Apparently Dubas was possessed by the evil hitZz demons for simmonds foligno etc as well. Anything wrong he has done can be chalked up to not performing a simple exorcism beforehand.

Can't make this stuff up. Dubas can literally do no wrong here.

Tyson Barrie was Dubas' biggest splash for the speed and skill package. He didn't even do that right.

Speed and skill genius :sarcasm:

His best prospect Sandin is slow and his best signing that didn't wear a "Leafs for life, please sign me" t-shirt in David Kampf isn't a skill guy. How ironic. I'm not hating on those signings, I like them, I just find it funny how there's nothing concrete to support this speed and skill vision yet Dubas is seen as some modern day speed and skill genius. In my opinion he's just some guy learning on the fly on a team that was in win-now mode who also hired a coach learning on the fly when the team was in win-now mode. (by win-now I mean CAN win-now)

There is really no difference between Dave Nonis coming into the league as a GM in his 30's versus Dubas coming into the league as a GM in his 30's. Have to take peoples word for it that Nonis is some up and coming bright mind that will lead a team to victory even though the supporting evidence was weak.

Marchment for malgin another speed and skill travesty. Can't blame Dubas though. Find someone the OP argues with on hfboards and blame them instead. Must have been traditional speed and skill, that's why

11m was Toronto's price. NY would have had to pay more which I bet at the time they would have been more than happy to.
I wonder if Islander fans are still upset. seen that forgotten video of the Islander fans crying yesterday lol
from my understanding Islander fans are happy now kinda funny to see how upset they were to how happy they are now hes gone
Thats what happens with simps. Leaf fans should beware of angst over who will stay and go. It can get a bit pathetic.

You would think by 2023, if he truly was what people say he is, either a prospect, signing or someone we traded for would be a speed / skill package we can be proud of. Give us something amongst all the 1st round losses.

Like others and yourself have pointed out, the guys who do make us proud and give us the confidence that we can win don't require Dubas to exist here.

This guy still doesn't know that NHL teams start four forward lines and sends out pathetic depth in the playoffs, yet I'm supposed to be convinced he's the guy for the job? Please.

I mean I guess there's Bunting, but even his vibe was that he was dead set on Toronto similar to Tavares and 2022 Giordano and Spezzas latter years. Dubas is definitely lacking that one key deal that puts a signature mark on the team. Maybe it will be Matt Murray leading us all the way. Let's see.

Whats pathetic here? and who's worried? lmao

Not sure what this has to do with my finding it kinda funny how upset everyone was to how happy everyone is that he left.

Lou offered him more, knowing he wouldn't take it. Good PR.

Islander fans were upset at the way he left, saying he would re-sign after the season so they wouldn't trade him, and he then went UFA and could go where he wanted. They are happy realizing the team did better without him, but disappointed they got nothing for him.

Lou offered more because he desperately wanted to keep him.

Except that's not what happened.

They're still crushed, knowing that losing him may have cost them the only chance at a cup that they'll have for a while.

I would argue that the Leafs do have a better team then the islanders and the addition of Tavares has not helped the Leafs win even a single round let alone a cup.
how do you figure he would have helped the islanders win a cup…….didn’t he have enough chances prior to leaving?

NYI have won 8 playoff rounds since losing JT.. That includes back to back final 4 appearance before they lost to the eventual Stanley Cup champ Lightening both times the last time by a score of 1-0 in game #7.

In 2020-21 then beat Pens (with Crosby in round #1) 4 games to 2, Boston in round (with Bergeron and co.) #2, 4 games to 2 and then bowed out to TB in round #3 in game #7.

Round #3
=========================================
Jun 13 New York Islanders 2 1 at Tampa Bay Lightning
Jun 15 New York Islanders 2 4 at Tampa Bay Lightning
Jun 17 Tampa Bay Lightning 2 1 at New York Islanders
Jun 19 Tampa Bay Lightning 2 3 at New York Islanders
Jun 21 New York Islanders 0 8 at Tampa Bay Lightning
Jun 23 Tampa Bay Lightning 2 3 at New York Islanders OT
Jun 25 New York Islanders 0 1 at Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay Lightning win series 4 games to 3 .

Not the player JT its the contract is what drags teams down.

Its going to be exciting some day if Leafs can rise to that level as the JT less NYIs.

Yeah, though it was a bit hard to notice him not doing much in the 4 games he played.

I mean, they still would have been a significant longshot, but a player like Tavares is the exact kind of piece they were missing. He didn't really have any chances to win a cup with them prior to leaving. They never had the pieces surrounding him. And now Lou has dug them a hole that will probably keep them down for a while.

Playoffs though, right?

Marchment has 10GP 3G 0A 3P -5

Cool thanks for the history lesson but I dont really care to be completely honest I didnt say anything to warrant an Islander's history lesson

Though not hard to see how having two guys he was very close with in the past - Keefe and Dubas' - played in that attraction.

Another front office may not have even had any interest in him to begin with, let alone be willing to play him on the 1st line right away

It wasn’t an accident that soon after he left they went on their run. You could see the difference in the two teams the night he returned to Long Island. No one is surprised that the Leafs have failed every time they’re challenged since he’s been a Leaf.

That's fair but its surprising how well it turn out for NYI and their playoff success and the team that landed the superstar is the one now with the longest playoff round #1 drought.

But the league exec and others know why the Leafs are struggling with JT.

THE SALARY CAP HELL BUCKET

Toronto Maple Leafs:
So long as the Big Four (Auston Matthews, John Tavares, Mitch Marner and William Nylander) account for nearly half ($40.4 million) of the frozen $81.5 million cap, filling in the gaps will be challenging.

The signing of Tavares seems to be at the forefront of all Leafs problems to ice a competitive playoff roster around the core 4.

You don't think it has anything to do with hiring arguably the best coach in the game who is known for his defensive structure as well as hiring arguably the best goalie coach in the game? There is a reason they went from being one of the worst defensive teams to being one of the best and I doubt it was because they subtracted a ppg 1C.
