Despite major challanges, Kyle Dubas has passed the tests

Dubas got fleeced on the Murray trade sweetener but he didn't break any fundamental principles of trading. Cap space market trading is still a bit fuzzy as of today. Asset trading has precedent set since decades ago that leaves a window open for us to lose this trade short term (cap space theory) but win it by 2023 (the area of trading we know well)

We didn't give up any assets so we are guaranteed to get the best asset in the trade. Murray would have to hit Mrazek sliding all the way to boards, reading an ad or two then finally coming back to his crease level of bad for us to get negative asset value from this trade. That's the only way we can give up the best asset in the trade (by going below 0).

It actually will be very easy for us to end up winning this trade. Murray avoids a concussion he will have a gaa under 2.6 and a save% over 90%. Then when the playoffs roll around, we cross our fingers he goes into full brick wall elite mode like he's capable of doing still. Doesn't even have to be every round. If we can finally escape round 1 I bet Marner finally cashes in on that xGF he puts up in round 1.

Salary cap space is now an asset. It has yet to be deter if Murray is the best asset in this trade.

4 forwards (one making 6.9 million, and the rest around 11 million each) prevent any upper to mid tier players playing for TOR.

They need to move on from one of those big 3 contracts sooner rather than later. I just don't see the depth or level of tending (without luck) to win it. Matthews is a really big maybe as far as staying in Canada IMHO. If I were him there is no chance I would stay here, especially if his family is right leaning politically. Virtually everyone I know from the US that heard about bank seizures for supporting protests think we are unstable and I don't doubt that had something to do with Johnny G leaving Calgary.

I know the above is the kind of post that is going to get mocked but to the reader. Think about what's gone on here lately even with Dubas. Ask yourself, do you see this working out? Dubas is a Zombie GM already, should be gone already.

Saving $1.6m on the Murray contract would have helped sign better UFAs. Instead we get Guadette and Samsonov who's teams threw them to the curb and an Avs waiver wire pickup. Steeves, Anderson and Robertson should be the answers but are they ??

Underwhelming offseason so far.

And how are we going to decide this? The 3rd rounder will need to be tracked too.

With the prices yesterday, good luck figuring out what the opportunity cost was to have Murrays cap hit on the roster. We don't even have access to what players even wanted to come here if the cap space did exist for them.

For the trade route, they still have unnecessary pieces they can clear out. If they land a guy too good to pass up via trade, I wouldn't be surprised if they use this 3rd rounder to accelerate the removal of Muzzin.

What we do know is our goaltending was horrible last season and Murray/Samsonov is more promising and has more upside than Campbell/Mrazek. I mean outside of tampa and new york everyone's goaltending is hit or miss for next year. Even Saros isn't a guarantee to have a gaa under 2.5

Leafs have the best odds to win this trade.

Right so then you have PO injuries obviously, and deep teams destroy your bargain bins up and down the ice. The depth isn't here, the caps not there to fix that. The box is painted, it's like this now and we need a new GM restructure already. Terrible stuff that should never have ever happened with the blessings we received.

You have to be a ostrich to not see what's shaping up right now.

If he plays well enough to deserve the contract, he’s equal value to the cap space. Worse is less, better is more.

Just because it’s tough to measure exactly doesn’t means cap space isn’t a valuable asset.

Only a shill will tell you different. Dubas has seriously made us paper thin up front and is gambling on a goalie who an expert says his game 5 years ago no longer works.

Dubas traded down 13 picks to dump Mrazek and his 3.8m cap hit. Pretty much tells you cap space is more valuable than some players. Riddle yourself this. If we put Murray on waivers today, who claims him?

You are correct but very generic statement that doesn't really dive into my post or counter the ways it can easily become a positive trade.

It's a time will tell situation, which means outcry and outrage from today is useless.

So far, I think this has been Dubas’ worst “off season”.

Quite the accomplishment since he set the bar so low the year he signed Jumbo and Vesey and last year when he signed Ritchie and Mrazek. Dumpster diving to fill out the roster does not work. How many years does he have to do this in order to get it ???

Just enough to bring us to Matthews contract year where he promptly leaves and says had enough of this smiley face 3 ring circus.

You do realize that we weren't even the first team to try and trade for him, right?
Ok so why aren't we trying to trade him right now?

😂yeah little chance he would get claimed. Teams only wanted him with large sweeteners attached. Dubas was the only one who didn’t hold out for value. He took what he was told he would take.

So you honestly think that? Who? Who do you think would claim him? I am dying to know.
If he certainly would have been claimed why was he a real buyout candidate if they couldn’t ditch him? Nobody was touching that salary, that’s common knowledge I thought. Why must we spin everything to fit an infallible GM narrative.
