There is not just one, Nylander, Matthews, Tavares and Marner all have negotiated contracts which reduce the idea winning as a team. . They place their own standards of living over the success of the team. Win they will not until they temper their greed and worry more about team success than what boats and fancy cars they can buy. For a few hits there are misses a plenty with Dubas. I think he's constructed a flawed team. They want to be like Colorado but they have noone on the backend that can lead a breakout like Makar.

With the money Kyle used for Gaudette, Aube-Kubel and Malgin they could have added 2.75M to upgrade from Justin Holl in a trade. 2M for Holl + 2.75M=someone better than Holl.

No, they couldn't. Not only do those players only cost 2.5m combined, but those roster spots still need to be filled. You can't just run 9 forwards because you want to overpay a Holl replacement. The bare minimum for those roster spots is 750k, meaning that you're working with a maximum of 250k if we didn't sign Kubel.

Because that's a significant overpayment for Palat.

Dubas got fleeced on the Murray trade sweetener but he didn't break any fundamental principles of trading. Cap space market trading is still a bit fuzzy as of today. Asset trading has precedent set since decades ago that leaves a window open for us to lose this trade short term (cap space theory) but win it by 2023 (the area of trading we know well)

We didn't give up any assets so we are guaranteed to get the best asset in the trade. Murray would have to hit Mrazek sliding all the way to boards, reading an ad or two then finally coming back to his crease level of bad for us to get negative asset value from this trade. That's the only way we can give up the best asset in the trade (by going below 0).

It actually will be very easy for us to end up winning this trade. Murray avoids a concussion he will have a gaa under 2.6 and a save% over 90%. Then when the playoffs roll around, we cross our fingers he goes into full brick wall elite mode like he's capable of doing still. Doesn't even have to be every round. If we can finally escape round 1 I bet Marner finally cashes in on that xGF he puts up in round 1.
