Pray that Murray holds out until Woll or Kallgren have looked like a #1 or Trade for a goalie for a team out of the picture. Trade one of the 11 million dollar anchors not named Matthews? When your team has three 11 million dollar + contracts meanwhile championship teams with equal players are making 9.5.... than you take the consequences that come with it.My dog could get this core into the playoffs, ffs.
And who plays then?
I really hope Dubas, Shanny, Pridham have their finger right on the pulse of what AM’s feelings are the next two years. I’m sure they do but they can’t take things for granted that he’ll automatically re-sign. It would be pure devastation if he walked in two years and we get zero assets back for him. I honestly don’t have a clue what he would be thinking. He’s mentioned before he loves Toronto and playing here is awesome, but every player when asked that question will say the same thing about their current team. He hasn’t once, as far as I know, mentioned his desire to sign an extension or play out his career in Toronto. If we take a slight step back this year and say are a bubble, wildcard team, and he still isn’t willing to give you an idea what his plans are, do you move him next season? I know it sounds insane and I do not want him going anywhere, but we have to at least entertain the possibility of it happening.Meh... I'd rather 2 years of Murray at 4 milliom than 5 years of Campbell at 5 million. If murray runs into injuries than we just put him on IR. I'm not particularly upset either.. this is what a team has to do when you have 3 of the top 6 paid NHL players. Imo if those players aren't putting you over top of other teams than you should make changes to those players..... Dubas, after 3 years, still refuses to do so.
Great post, fully agree with it all. I know most will counter with well Johnsson wasn’t anything special, but he was and is still an everyday NHL player. Even at the time it was pretty clear Anderson had very little upside to his game and would be destined for the AHL, or in and out 4th line duty. Our scouting departments, amateur and pro need to be overhauled. I do like them targeting Blackwell in the Gio trade. But we could have used McCann way more than keeping Holl, they should have known Liljegren was ready to take the next step and then filling in his role isn’t a huge chore. Our goaltending for two years now has been sketchy and he hasn’t really shown a desire or ability to improve on that. I just wish he would have more courage and take some more risks, he’s such a boring, play the long game sort of GM and I just feel we’ve stagnated. I really hope Murray can make me eat crow and he’s healthy and ready to rock, but I think we take a slight step back this year. The other Atlantic teams are getting better fairly quickly. My biggest issue with Dubas is undervaluing assets. Like, losing a deal once in a while is fine. Its part of business, EVERY GM does it. But when you have to rationalize every single deal he makes to find some good part it becomes too much.
He throws away NHL players for AHL players all the time (Johnsson for Anderson etc). Loss.
He moves mid round picks out all the time to get out of bad deals. Loss
He moves high picks to get out of deals. Loss (this I actually have less issues with ...Mrazek, Marleau etc).
And now hes added a new column of undervaluing....taking a boat anchor from a divisional rival without nearly enough sweetner
Id dearly love him to just move an asset and bring back a great package or young players/prospects/picks. They dont have to be A grade assets, but someone I can hope to see on the Leafs and not just sent immediately to the Marlies with no intention to ever play in the NHL.
Like I feel if Holl or Kerfoot is moved (both NHL players) we're just going to get this summers versions of Joey Anderson back.
Yeah, the likelihood of Murray matching his career high GP at 50 seems optimistic right now, so we’re not looking at just a run of the mill backup, we need almost a legit platoon for the other 32 games. And that’s if he can start 50 games. Gun to my head right now, I predict Murray ultimately starts 38 games for Toronto this seasonWho is going to be the back up? Murray may or may not bounce back but you got to feel he needs a decent back up to help him out based on his last couple years?

Sadly you are not wrong. Your dog also would not have taken Murray at 25%. Hell he probably would not shot himself in the foot but letting the world know he had no other options in goal. I am also assuming your dog has never been to the Soo.My dog could get this core into the playoffs, ffs.

Correct on all counts.
When playing ball with my dog I call him Freddie any time one gets past him, goes through his legs, or he loses sight of it in his feet. That is obviously a reference to Andersen.
My dog has been pretty sick for the last 3-4 weeks, and is constantly at the vet to figure out what is wrong. So from now on when one gets past him, goes through his legs, or he loses sight of it in his feet I'll call him Murray instead.
His contract and his buddies contract are part of the reason they can't ice a competitive roster. Can't blame anyone but themselves.I really hope Dubas, Shanny, Pridham have their finger right on the pulse of what AM’s feelings are the next two years. Also inherited a top 10 goalie with term.
Didn’t JFJ tell the board they need to rebuild after the lockout but they told him no and to find a way to stay competitive?
I think you nailed it. It seemed like Dubas would get the deals done without realizing the leverage he had in each of these deals and decisions.I hate to reference the Sparks-McBackup transition again, but it seems like Kyle is able to make a lot of decisions that can be rationally understood in terms of motivation, expected outcome and level of risk factor and asset management but seems to consistently miss the mark in terms of specific insight into what he’s giving up or bringing on.
Like “if we transition to the younger option that has had AHL success, clearly this will be right option.” But then Sparks is a dud and his promotion fails to help the big club. It’s like a generic play that misses the specifics.
And like you said. He’ll make moves just to cross off the to do list. Take less back. Pay more out. If he was managing the Raptors, he’d probably have rammed through the Kevin Durant trade by now paying premium assets in a non competitive negotiation.

Yes.
The prevalent thought now however, is that MLSE aren't nearly as involved as they used to be
How much longer does Shanahan & Co. watch this Gong Show before they fire Dubas ?
I wonder if Shanny is going to have to hold a press conference to try and stem the tide of media and angst and fan hate of the Leafs right nowThe Matt Murray deal really put the Dubas regime into a tailspin. The open speculation about how he’s put his job on the line on this move is really a new tone that the media hasn’t really led with even with the playoff failures. In terms of building, introducing stability and steadily running it back, this trade really puts the spotlight on his tenure.
