It's almost like this team needed a President/GM combo who would de-emphasize the individual in favour of team goals. It's almost like this team needed a coach who the players might not particularly like but who would push them to be more substantial hardened pros on a team rather than individuals thinking about their next epic goal celebration.

Sometimes feels like a vicious cycle here in Toronto. Bell and Rogers own the Leafs so they have to amplify storylines and the media saturated environment turns players into superstars. Then we need to pay them like superstars and a premium at that. You look at all the great young players in the game today and the disproportionate amount of Leaf focus the whole league has. It’s like the NHL has one big market and everybody else takes a back seat sometimes.

I know hindsight is 20/20, but many people said a few years ago move Nylander for a solid D.
So we sink a little 3 years ago until we rise stronger.
What if we had a Pesce and a 1st, ride out Marleau last year for the additional 1st, don’t trade 1sts for guys like Foligno when you haven’t won a round, traded Kapanen for the 1st, etc. We could be very different with our own additional impact draft picks. Count those additional picks up. We have none of that in the lineup.

Until a couple of our future prospects (Knies, Robertson, Amirov, Niemela) make the jump and contribute significantly, I can't see us being a serious contender filling out the roster via UFA.

We are now back to competing, finishing near the top of the league, getting low draft picks and trading most away in order to patch the lineup, and sweeten to dump mistakes. Sorry it is not a SC winning recipe.

Any realistic way we can fit Kadri back on the team next year?

5 years 6M.

He probably doesn't take only 30M when he'll have 45-50M offers on the table.

Would love to see him come back home and win a cup with us. Him and Kessel

It was a bad trade because we didn’t get what we needed long term.
You can trade anyone as long as you get what you need to fit.

Added to the fact that our current core has issues with a pulse and bite, it hurts even more.
We needed a RHD, we didn’t get it.

We had JT, Matthews, Marner, Nylander, Kadri and needed a top flight D.
Nothing.
We still need it as well as a goalie and if JT is slowing down and needs to shift to the wing, we need a 2C. And some bite in the core. These are things lacking. You trade to get what you need from excess in one area.
They traded him for sake of trading him. They originally felt he was valuable enough to get Brodie, but when that fell through they took the lesser deal. The obviously believed there was some value removing him from the roster than him playing for the Leafs.

I doubt he has any intention of returning here. His comments last night were aimed directly at the management here, he won't want anything to do with them.

They dumped Naz like they dumped Phil. The difference is Naz cared, Phil did not. We do not have enough players that care enough IMO.

Do you think Kadri’s suspension factored into Dubas’ decision to pick Kadri as the trade bait?
You kind of just asked me that. But again, I think so, he probably looked at the who player. If it did and again I think it did, it was probably less than what he considered a team need and as an attempt to try and improve the team.

Yeah, 34 goals and 80 points though and that's playing with slow a** Tavares. He long left Ehlers in the dust as his comparable. I can't really complain too much. That one play where he pulled up was pretty inconsequential but the optics were terrible.
How so?

Perhaps a premature statement, I'm a bit of a Willie fan now, but Willie is definitely trending better than Ehlers. Ehlers started his career off better.

Ok, but if so, why were the Dubas fans suggesting Ehlers wasn't a fair comparable and Nylander deserved much more after his ELC?

I can give him a pass on that trade for the sake of trading because he hadn't finished his the job training and mistakes were bound to happen. Since we agree that a part of Dubas was doubting and losing faith in Naz, he‘s include in the arse kissing group.

i know what i said and it's fact that he's made multiple deals disappear painlessly and even the one where he had to pay like Ladd which was a much worse deal than Marleau's he still didn't give up a 1st to trade him

but hey , who am i to stop you from worshiping Dubas , especially since this will most likely be the last season you'll be able too do it
Some are making a big deal about Patty's NMC...You don't think Lou would have just said he will sit him all season if he doesn't agree to a trade and kill his iron man streak? There were ways to get around the deals last season without sending a 1st to the Canes...we just didn't have the right guy at the helm.

Ehlers was a very fair comparable. More than fair. Nylanders best argument was that he went 1 pick higher. Some people said the cap went up or some such stuff. So it went up $6 to $7.5 in one year? The usual excuses....
This is made worse by the fact we have 3 other forwards making 11 million. Too many.

Agreed. IMO Ehlers was the comparable for Nylander.

$6M X 7 with no signing bonuses for Ehlers

Add the 6% Cap inflation (a bit less if he wants up front money) and it's somewhere between 6.25-6.35 for 7 years.

It was Lou that gave him a NTC in the 1st place. Marleau absolutely would've dictated where he was going. He only wanted to go back to CALI or else we were going to be stuck with his dead money for a year. There was only one team willing to buy out his 6M contract and that's why it cost a 1st.

The Leafs had no leverage whether it was Dubas or Lou making the trade.
sad how Dubas never has leverage

-trades
-ufa or rfa

i feel sorry how he has to operate without any leverage in anything compared to every other GM
