Dermott is a highly intelligent player who can handle the rigours of puck battles with big forwards. Exactly what the leafs need in their top four. It’s a shame he shoots left.

He’s improved every year since being drafted and most likely has 4 or 5 years of development remaining. It wouldn’t surprise me if he surpasses Rielly at some point.

Yeah, thats because he is 215 pounds and strong as a horse.

I posted a year or two ago that I think Dermott has the overall better "skill set/tool box" than Rielly, I got torched for saying it. Have opinions changed now from actually seeing him play?

"You have to come in and steal a job...."

*Dermott comes in and steals a job*

"...uh, not THAT job"

Would you relax. There is a log jam right now. Dermott will be here full time at the end of the season and next season full time. They have to manage contracts. If Dermott plays a certain amount of games he becomes waiver eligible and they obviously do not want that to happen especially considering they have to be able to move him down until they get rid of one of the other defenseman permantely.

It's all about contract management and roster manipulation. Obviously everyone knows Dermott belongs up. As Ray Ferraro said on overdrive, Dermott's biggest road block is his age and waiver eligibility.

no but I wouldn't rule out him being a similar player. Not many players end up better than what Rielly is though

He has the potential to be really good. Especially since he can skate, move the puck and has a howitzer, just needs to work on putting it in the right spots/

Drew Doughty lite is a good comp for me. Great skating, plays tough, and good IQ and positioning at both ends of the ice. Nice shot too. He'll most likely never reach that same level as Drew, but I love the way he plays

I come in peace,

For once I actually agree with you. He is positionally sound and can rush the puck. I think when all is said and done he will be in the same category as Werenski, Hanifin and Provorov

I've always liked Dermott, he and Rielly are pretty similar.
What name did you use to post under?

We'll see if he stays once Zaitsev is back. I doubt it, regardless of his play.

You're right he won't! It's because he can go through waivers. That's the only reason. It will be interesting if they move Carrick or Polak out at the deadline so they can keep him up

At this point I'm quite confident in saying that's not going to happen.

We have strong management but they are apparently allergic to making decisions.

They aren't allergic to making decisions. People want them to make impulsive decisions. The one thing I like about this management group is they look at the whole picture. Why would we loose an asset for free on waivers just to bring up a kid we know is gonna have a bright future with us for years to come?

Dermott is gonna be on this roster permanently most likely next year and playoffs this year. There is no rush to get him to a spot that's already waiting there for him.

There's nothing wrong with taking g credit here. Let's go one step further though:

Is he our 1C?

Reilly is an all star D this year, are we really projecting that for Dermott now? I'm not, a good top four is what I could see, and that's awesome!!

Yup! We could waive polak or maybe try to get 2 2nds for him?

I'm not trying to rush them into an impulsive decision. I just think that when somebody comes in and plays great, you should consider letting them continue to do that instead of slamming on the breaks and going in a different direction. They've OPTED to go back to what wasn't working... It's just silly.

An improved Gardiner is what I've predicted.
Similar skating but physical and plays defense better

I agree! Although I can't see them moving Polak (important for PK and vet guy and also a RHD. Carrick is someone I think they can move for a pick.)

I do think Dermott if he emerges may make gardiner expendable next year.

I agree provided there is a roster spot. But there isn't. To keep Dermott going when Zaitsev gets back means we have to move someone via trade or to the minors. If we put any of our defenseman currently with the team I'm 95% confident all will get claimed.

Dermott is waiver ineligible so you put him down till a roster spot frees up.
