Change of scenery may have helped him. His issue was always consistency though, so let's see how he does these last few games.

So true.

I just hope fans don't start bagging him when he inevitably goes through a little cold stretch.

Really enjoying watching this kid with the puck on his stick. Definitely has the skill to be a solid player. Needs to find a balance between risk and safety though. He's had some unfortunate turnovers in the neutral zone.

Exactly. I think he sometimes starts to overthink and hang onto the puck which leads to those turnovers. He needs to make quicker decisions at times.

Outscoring Gabby since the trade.

Ridiculous.

Different scenarios entirely for both players, you can't compare, and even if you did you are including that joke of a Pittsburgh game where he had 4 points, and last night he had two. Those games were both blowouts where almost every forward was on the scoresheet. That should tell you something about those games.

Since the trade:

BJ's 6-3

NYR's 5-3

One of the better passers on the team...

Who did he have to 'pass' to get there, Boyle? Pyatt?

I believe that Brassard benefits just by getting out of Columbus. He gets to a team where the young leadership core has already been established. He's no longer a top 10 pick that the franchise is waiting to develop. He has both Stepan and Richards carrying the burden of being the top two centers. He gets to just play his game. I liked the kid in the 2006 draft, and was happy to hear that the Rangers had been targeting him as far back as 2010. So far, so good.

Agreed he's been good, I liked him in his draft year too, never thought he'd be anything less than what he is.

The idea behind parting with Marian Gaborik at the NHL Trade Deadline was a simple one for the New York Rangers: Give up the premier goal scorer to become a deeper, more dangerous team overall.

Derick Brassard has made general manager Glen Sather look like a genius since arriving on a last-minute flight from Columbus right before pregame warm-ups on April 3, and the forward continued to excel Thursday against the Florida Panthers, scoring twice in a 6-1 victory at Madison Square Garden.

The 25-year-old has played well enough of late to not only give the Rangers supplemental offense that has been lacking all season, but he has supplanted Brad Richards as the team's No. 2 center. Brassard has had more ice time in each of the past four games than his 32-year-old counterpart and has become a valuable asset on the power play.

Come now. The Rangers blew out two teams, BECAUSE he contributed those points, not the other way 'round. I don't mean to take anything away from Gabby who has also been good since the trade and I absolutely agree that they are different scenarios - but comments like this sound an awful lot like trying to downplay his performance to justify your preexisting opinion.

He's over a PPG since he's been here. Because he's contributed those points the team has scored more - including blowing out a couple of teams. So, somehow that invalidates his points? Does not compute.

Comments like what?

Those are the facts.

Oh come on. I'm specifically referring to the fact that your comment made it seem like somehow his points are less valuable than Gabby's because some of them came in games where the Rangers blew out the other team. To which I'm saying that his points are WHY they blew out the other teams. I mean, how many other players on this team do you think shoot his second goal from last night wide as opposed to off the post and in the net?

As Bill Parcells famously said, you are what your record says you are. Since he's been here, he's been over a PPG player. Could that change? Sure. But, for his first 8 games he's been a damn fine player for the Rangers.

Brassard hasn't been that good to make Sather look like a genius which is impossible. Brassard has been OK. Nothing special. He has his moments. He needs to play on every shift. Not take any shifts off. Gaborik? 2 of his 3 goals made the scores 4-0 and 4-1. Padding the stats. In the Anaheim game,he had a point blank shot in the first period. Nothing. Too much in and out.

I never said he was less valuable, I showed the teams records which seems to be a way better indicator of how the trades have affected the teams. Not indivisuals, the teams.

'Damn fine', that's your opinion.

That reminds me of in 2010-11, 2 of Gaborik's 22 goals put the Rangers up by 6 goals. If that's not statting the pads I don't know what is.

The Rangers are 5-2-1 in their last 8, not 5-3. Brassard has a point or more in 5 of those 8 games. Hard to argue that he isn't producing better than Gaborik or that the powerplay hasn't markedly improved. And then you toss in Moore and Dorsett and I can't see how, after 8 games, you can't say that the Rangers got the better end of the deal. Really small sample size, but if you have to judge it right now then it's in the Rangers favor.

Sorry, Rangers are 5-2-1 since the trade, not 5-3. Those are the facts. (edited to reflect this)

True, it is.

Has he been Sidney Crosby? Of course not. Has he been a better than a PPG 2nd line center and bumped Brad Richards down the depth chart on a team that's gone 5-2-1 since acquiring him? Yes. That's "damn fine" in my view.

The fact that we are in this situation is disturbing enough, now we're all gonna sit here and applaud mediocrity for the next few weeks. Not much changes, anything positive that happens to this team is overstated, not understated. 'Damn fine' is what you say, I totally expect him to produce at his position with 'some' regularity. Man, I'm really being tough on these professionals, huh?

Actually, what you should've been "expecting" is a .54 point-per-game player (career in Columbus) and what you've gotten, so, far is a 1.125 points-per-game player.

I'd say that doubling his career output, so far, is quite exceeding expectations.

Brassard has been a revelation. Actual skill with the puck. So nice to watch him and Zucc not only know what to do with the puck in the offensive zone but have the ability to actually do it. He has 9 points in 8 games. Our now fallen ex-3rd line center has 5 points all year. As I said, a revelation.

This is the deepest team he has ever played for, of course I'd expect him to do a better job with better options.

Revelation based on what was here before - nothing ! Top stars who looked like lumpy frogs, bottom pair stonehands with absolutely no offensive game.

REALLY? He's producing points at a better pace with the Rangers than anyone in the league not named Stamkos, Crosby, and St. Louis and this is what you "expected"? I have to call BS on that. That's just being dishonest.

Take out that first game against the Pens, not the norm by a long shot.

Based on the games after that, yes, he's performing like he should. He was brought in to bring offense, that's his game.

Obviously the sample size is tiny, but I find that most players' performances is
weakened when you take out their most successful games.

I'm guessing it will be an evaluation technique used on HFNYR for years to come, though. Most commonly used for Brian Boyle and Tom Renney, historically.

Not only his most successful game, it was everyones, thats how you can tell it wasn't normal by a fair margin.

He seems to go with how the team goes, thats fine, not 'damn fine' :D

Not normal, so therefore it doesn't count? Gotcha.

No you don't 'gotcha', cause that's not what I said, you just take it too far cause you can't comprehend that's its not one extreme or the other.
Maybe you could help me to understand what you mean, then.

You're absolutely right that I don't comprehend how one can "Take out that first game" while still counting it.
