There's a good chance he can. Especially if Stastny can't revive his game somewhat. Center is by far the weakest position for the US in 2014. If Kesler is healthy, he's a lock. Backes should be a lock. Pavelski and Stepan should nail down the last two center spots. Galchenyuk might have an outside shot if he's running hot next year.

Also an important note is Stepan's USA hockey pedigree. He's had great showings in every international competition he's participated in.

He's a lock he keeps playing like this. Besides Stastny he's the only other guy I see as a natural Center. Kesler, Backes and Pavelski can play the wing if need be.

Everybody saw that he was struggling at the onset of the season. The members that were labeling him a 'third-line center' and ridiculed people who preferred Stepan over Adam ****ing Henrique are the ones that need to eat crow.

Not sure how that's an insult. Henrique is a phenomenal player and quite underrated.

Jussi Jokinen on the other hand was lol worthy.

Just noticed that Stepan is 5th in the league in TOI for a center.

Interesting stat. Only thing he really needs to improve on is his FO%, which is a little less than 2% under par.

He's done that. His % is skewed a bit cause the first 10 games he was brutal, not sure what he did but his has been extremely effective most nights at the dot.

Edit - on closer look, he still has been somewhat inconsistent game by game. Ignore what I said!

Like I said revisionist history. Everyone here who is fair recognizes he struggled massively for a lengthy duration last year as well. You want to waste paragraphs trying desperately to tell people "I told you so" Doesn't take much to discount it though. To insinuate the overpaid vets aren't 5 times the whipping boys around here is just blatantly false. And how is saying "Stepan needs to find his game he's been brutal for too long" making him a whipping boy? I think you're being too dramatic and I don't get what the end game is for you. Is this hockey discussion or everyone be right all the time? Like I said if some bozo wanted to trade Stepan for spare parts that person is a fool. Many said that he HAS the talent but he wasn't putting it together and he was called out for good reason

Honestly the end game is to lay off the kids.... they will have there ups and downs and that should be ok... when this team struggled to start the season stepan and Kreider should not of been the first players to blame. and on most these boards they were. Ya I saw all the Gabby for Jokinen or richards for bozak trades rolling around these boards after 9 games.... this Has nothing to do with me being right... Just the fact that you tell me he struggled massively last year says enough to me. 21 yr old kid who played all 82 games. killed penalties, played pp. was teams best defensive center, great +/- and had almost 50 pts... ya thats not something that makes a lot of sense to me. most 21 yr old kids who struggle mightily for the amount of time you are suggesting get healthy scratched or sent down not have their minutes increase.... Ive never made a single point about trying to be right or hear me say see I told you so.... I see it happening to JT miller right now. And Why.... he's 19 let him play thru it.... I Hope I can write in a year from now that I told you so.. on Kreider... and Miller... because this team has some good years ahead of them if these kids can be as good as I think they can.

Probably has something to do with the fact that Richards and Gaborik were producing through the first 10 games.

Some people on this board actually call it like they see it.

While he does need to improve his FO%, he's been great at winning important faceoffs

1st 9 games
Stepan 5 pts +2
Gabby 8 pts. +2. 2 games 7 pts other 7 games 1 pt but let's look the other way there.
Richy. 8 pts +5.

I was expecting to see steps with 2 pts -5 and gabby and richy with 12 points....
1 extra point every 3 games.... Wow completely outplayed... Now I get why he was the scapegoat.

This season
Richy makes 146,000 per game
Gabby makes 96,000 per game
Steps makes. 10,000 per game.

Having another great game, he has hit a rich vein of form!

Lundqvist is unfortunately the only other player who's bringing his A-game.

Wonderful more revisionist history he didn't struggle at any point last year...yup. C'mon it's not exactly me demanding a trade for spare parts. I think he got hurt towards the end of last year into the PO's and was completely and utterly MIA. He continued to be MIA this year which was worrisome especially because he was reportedly horrendous overseas too. There's zero wrong with discussing a player who is performing poorly for a duration. And lay off the kids? Huh it's a stupid message board. We're not affecting jack I'm not choc full of hubris to ever assume anything any of us zero's say on this forum will ever effect the team. This is for us to discuss things not worry about magically hurting Stepan's feelings by discussing when his play drops off.

The only bright light? Derek Stepan

Have been truly impressed with his play this season, at both ends of the ice. He is still very young with lots of room to grow. Right now, he's playing at about a 70 point pace in a full season for the worst offensive team in the league.

My question is: what do you think his ceiling is? I always thought of him as a max #2 center, but I'm starting to change my mind. I can easily see a 25 goal, 60 assist season in his future playing with Nash. Combined with increased physical play, that's a #1 pivot.

I've been openly critical of Step in the past but he has certainly been our best 2 way player this year.
Realistically speaking, I believe he'll do just fine as a #2 pivot and we should all be more than satisified if he produces 20/40 seasons going forward which is pretty darn good production from a 2nd rd pick.
I really don't think he has all the tools and talent necessary to compete night and night out against legit #1 pivots in the league.

This should not be interpreted as a knock against Step; I just don't think it's realistic for him or the team for him to be the #1 pivot going forward as opposed to him becoming the "de-facto" #1 pivot this year because of Richard's failures.

Not every team will have a Tavares , Spezza , Getzlaf , of course Crosby or Malkin . But if you had 3 Stepan's I think you'd have a great chance Of being highly competitive

Stepan is making 875,000 this year.. most I see him getting per year is 3M as a RFA (unless someone offer sheets)

I love how people continue to wax poetic about PA Parenteau. Does anyone remember game #82 versus Philly? The game that decided which team would make the playoffs? Well, PA Parenteau was the worst player on the ice in that game, and made several key mistakes, including taking the penalty which the Flyers tied the game on. He wasn't impressive in the other games he played. At the time, he was a 26 year old career AHLer coming off a extremely mediocre NHL stint. Did anyone really expect him to be re-signed?

Sorry, I just don't think highly of him. Productive offensive player, not much more. Let's see what he can do on a team that isn't a perennial bottom-dweller.

Anyway, this thread is about Stepan, not Parenteau. Not every ****ing thread needs to be about PA Parenteau. Take it to the Glen Sather thread.

[] Sample size

He played one bad game.

He played one bad game.

In the BIGGEST game of the season.

He was mediocre in the rest of the games, anyway. Slow and weak with the puck. He seems to have improved his skating, though, which has allowed him to be a contributing top-6 forward.

He's having a pretty nice stretch. He's always been an inconsistent player, though.

Another strong start from Stepan. Didn't overthink or overwait that shot. I think his wrister is underrated.
