Derek Stepan

Loving Derek Stepan this year. He has stepped up and been the Rangers best player IMO.

His Freshmen year I stood by the notion that he was primed to be a very good 2nd line center or sufficient 1st line center, I think he's proving me wrong.

What??????? Stepan on his best days on the ice is barely a borderline 2nd line center!
His game has more holes than swiss cheese.

Step is on pace for over 63 points over 82 games while playing a smart two-way game that has no more holes than American cheese.

Derek Stepan, now 20th in points among centers. That's a first line center, people.

He's always had a decent shot, but he's shooting MORE. It seems he's taken a liking to scoring goals, as well as the extra room playing with Nash affords him.

It seemed like he would once in a while shock everyone (or at least me) with a sick wrister but most of the time even when he did shoot it, his shot didn't look dangerous.

I think what i'm most impressed about is his improvement in defense. Last year I thought he was getting overrated here. This year he's been GREAT defensively.

He does everything, and he does everything well.

He's becoming one of the best two-way centers in the league.

He plays in every situation, and he excels in every situation. He's become one of our best PKers, too.

Add yet another great game for Steps. Not even the goal. His PK work stood out to me today. Great at picking the pocket and clearing the zone.

I don't think I have seen too many players who have developed in such a logical, linear progression.

Everybody knew he was good at the beginning, and had potential, but the constant improvement is really something. He is becoming quite a special player, as nothing so far has been anything but solid, won't-lose-it-later growth of skill.

Edit: I forgot to say that what's between the ears is so important.

I don't want to be that cocky guy, but I think he's pretty much a lock for #1C on Team USA at the Olympics with his previous pedigree. Parise-Stepan-Kane

This is yet another example where people need to stop thinking that our players will peak during their rookie season.

"Stepan will be a middling player between a 2 and a 3 liner. Oh wait, he already achieved that as a rookie? Guess he won't be improving anymore."

"McDonagh will be a second pairing defenseman. Oh wait, he did that as a rookie? Then no more improvement for him."

Instead of assuming rookies and sophomores won't get better, we need to change our assessment of players.

Amongst US centers this year, Stepan is first in goals, assists, points, game winners, ice time and +/-.

Muahahahahaha.
