this is the Stepan from his first season. I didn't think i'd ever see this player again and he just reemerged... i'm eating total crow after trashing him early...

Why are people not allowed to comment on when a player underperforms for practically an entire year? I don't think as many people have to eat crow as this thread suggests you prob dont have to either.
I mean if you are an impatient fool and beg for him to be traded for next to nothing yea you should be scarfing but Stepan was garbage for a long time between last year and recently this year he even blew chunks in a much lesser euro league. Young players do that but when they do it there's nothing wrong with simply saying "I wish Stepan would pull his head out of his ass and return to the form he showed in the WJC, Wisconsin and his rookie year."

I commented months ago how I'd rather have Anisimov but I felt Stepan would develop really well too and I love how he keeps on reading plays defensively so hopefully his offense would start to come. It's a helluva thing to have to start dictating offense to an entire team when you're a young kid still. You not only have to beat NHL vets you have to also think about how your decisions are evaluated by your coaches, mates on the ice and mates on the bench. He finally seems to have grabbed the bull and said "I know what I'm doing." It's like what a young QB has to learn to do in the huddle. Stepan's the kind of heady player that has to control things which means he has to command confidence and respect. It's been made all the more difficult because he is limited physically. A guy like Malkin or Ovie can use his physical tools and it's much more obvious that teammates can respect and show confidence in a player like that. Guy's like Cally/Step/Hag they have to give as much as possible and bust their ass. All three have done it. So have our D men and some players who left recently. Hope Step doesn't regress again and instead continues to build on what he's been showing lately

Winger vs. center...not sure I understand the comparison.

Regardless, there's a lot of crow to be eaten in this thread.

Tortorella said. “I thought Step was brutal when he started this year. I thought he really struggled. But he stayed with it, worked on his game, and just concentrated, and he’s turned into one of our top players"

3 points tonight. Anyone from this thread earlier in the season want to eat some crow yet?

Yeah, you wonder if anyone who called him out early in the season even saw this team play...

(joke)

Everybody saw that he was struggling at the onset of the season. The members that were labeling him a 'third-line center' and ridiculed people who preferred Stepan over Adam ****ing Henrique are the ones that need to eat crow.

You certainly can. You'll just be called out for it if you're completely wrong, like in this case with Stepan -- considering he had a better statistical season in 11-12 than his first season.

So, while you have every right to say that "Derek Stepan has underperformed for practically an entire year," I have the right to tell your that its ********.

I love how people continue to wax poetic about PA Parenteau. Does anyone remember game #82 versus Philly? The game that decided which team would make the playoffs? Well, PA Parenteau was the worst player on the ice in that game, and made several key mistakes, including taking the penalty which the Flyers tied the game on. He wasn't impressive in the other games he played. At the time, he was a 26 year old career AHLer coming off a extremely mediocre NHL stint. Did anyone really expect him to be re-signed?

Sorry, I just don't think highly of him. Productive offensive player, not much more. Let's see what he can do on a team that isn't a perennial bottom-dweller.

Anyway, this thread is about Stepan, not Parenteau. Not every ****ing thread needs to be about PA Parenteau. Take it to the Glen Sather thread.

People werent wrong he was awful... maybe their preferences or trade demands were dumb and they should be called out for that of course but stepan blew to start this year and he wasnt good for a significant portion of last year it was legitamately concerning. I just think it's silly to deal in revisionist history just so you can condescend to people no matter how wrong they were.

Blowing for the 1st 9 games of a season that started in January.... Richards blew just as much, Gabby sucked, Cally sucked, even hank struggled. Nash, Hagelin and McD looked good to start the year but of all the guys who struggled. lets make the 22yr old kid on a ELC the whipping boy...not the guys making 12 mil. and 9 mil no way Gabby skates fast. look how cool Richards hair flows in the wind. But because he's a inefficient akward looking skater. Most people on here believe he's slow way to slow to be a #2 center in this league. I hate to break it to you but he's still the same akward slow looking skater. Ya you can all say what you want but its all back pedaling from the people who wanted to keep dubi or get jokingen. Below Average hockey IQ shows up on this board more than not.
Trade Gaborik for a #2 center.. amnesty Richards this summer. keep MCD, Steps, Hags locked up long term. See whats on the market to fill this team with parts needed.
Just remember he's 22 Miller is 19 cut them some slack when they slump. Kreider is young. they are the future and shouldn't be the scapegoats.

With all the bottom 6 forwards and 3rd pairing defensemen being needlessly blamed for the bad start, lets talk about a huge source of the actual problem, Derek Stepan.

In many ways, Stepan at the 2C spot is a major key to this season. He has been a ghost at even strength so far this year, and hes brought everyone put on his wings down with him. This team cannot win it all unless Stepan wakes up and is a main catalyst for the secondary scoring this team is currently missing.
Maybe consistency hasn't been as great as we could hope, but to blame Stepan when Gaborik and Richards are MIA is hilarious.

I think the blame on the bottom 6 is sometimes taken too far, but the fact of the matter is, you can't win when your bottom six don't provide ANY support, which has laregly been the case this season.

Additionally, when your top center, the guy you pay to be the major producer from the center position, is not only not producting, but turning it over all the time and just playing downright bad for the type of player he normally is, I don't know how you can blame the 2C who, even when he doesn't score, brings it every night and rarely makes a defensive mistake.

Would be wrong if he didn't. He'd be perfect for Team USA's bottom-6 role.
I think he fits the role, but I don't know about perfect. Our bottom six should be all about grit and size. Callahan is the perfect bottom six forward for USA. Dustin Brown is perfect. Stepan is a nice piece if he makes it, but far from perfect when you look at what we're up against in Canada.

Like I said revisionist history. Everyone here who is fair recognizes he struggled massively for a lengthy duration last year as well. You want to waste paragraphs trying desperately to tell people "I told you so" Doesn't take much to discount it though. To insinuate the overpaid vets aren't 5 times the whipping boys around here is just blatantly false. And how is saying "Stepan needs to find his game he's been brutal for too long" making him a whipping boy? I think you're being too dramatic and I don't get what the end game is for you. Is this hockey discussion or everyone be right all the time? Like I said if some bozo wanted to trade Stepan for spare parts that person is a fool. Many said that he HAS the talent but he wasn't putting it together and he was called out for good reason

What is team USA's center depth looking like? Does Stepan have any chance of cracking the roster?

There's a good chance he can. Especially if Stastny can't revive his game somewhat. Center is by far the weakest position for the US in 2014. If Kesler is healthy, he's a lock. Backes should be a lock. Pavelski and Stepan should nail down the last two center spots. Galchenyuk might have an outside shot if he's running hot next year.

Also an important note is Stepan's USA hockey pedigree. He's had great showings in every international competition he's participated in.
