this is the Stepan from his first season. I didn't think i'd ever see this player again and he just reemerged... i'm eating total crow after trashing him early...

I disagree. He's far better now than he was in his first season. He's much more consistent and his playmaking skills are shining through more than ever.

mind you he's playing with a Rick Nash that can make anything happen from anywhere.

Yeah, but he's been away from Nash for a substantial part of the season too. He's been great no matter who he has had on his wings. In prior years he would disappear for long stretches and his passing game would inexplicably vanish. This year he's making great feeds to set up scoring chances every single game.

plus look at the short handed goal he had and his work on the PK... thse goals with callahan and Hags.. the guys IQ is off the charts..its more then nash..hes been scoring and playmaking left and right..

Stepan is just tearing it up. Our homegrown 1C of the future?

Actually, with Richards playing the way he is, I guess Stepan is the 1C of the present too.

Although he got off to a very slow start, since he's picked it up Stepan has been their best overall player IMO. Tortorella better keep this line together as it definitely produces much better than any other line he's come up with this year.

Maybe, I don't see it though. He will be in the league 15 years though, hopefully.

Stepan, during his first season, did not demonstrate the vision he has been so far this year. This is the Stepan who dominated the WJC- his vision is crazy. That pass to Nash for the goal was really a beauty- he saw in a split second that he had the lane and made the pass with no hesitation directly to Nasher. His pass to spring Hags in the first 4 minutes was also great.

And his defense has been fantastic- infinitely superior to last. He's improved every year he's in the league and he's only 23!

I'm telling you, Patrice Bergeron #2.

I nearly pooped my pants when he made that pass to Hagelin to start the game.

When you come into the NHL in a Torts system you have to understand your own end first and make sure Torts can trust you in most situations! Step did that and I think that's why we did not see that vision in his first year or so!

I think JT is similar to step in that he has more offensive upside to his game but Torts does not quite trust him yet! It is a process and Stepan is certainly picked it up. Stepan has become one of the best 10 two way forwards in the league.

Classic! Stepan For Mayor!!!!

One thing that I think he's vastly improved on this year versus prior years is his work along the boards. He seems much stronger in that area and it's been a large part of his improvement, IMO. He's able to forecheck more effectively, which leads to him having the puck on his stick for longer periods of time, which leads to him setting up more plays and scoring more goals.

Stepans been good for most of the year to be honest. 25 points in 32 games...but, only 13 games without a point. Only once has had gone 3 straight games w/o a point, and 2 games twice (not including the 3 game stretch).

remarkably consistent for a team filled with inconsistency.

This years team has been carried by Stepan and Hagelin offensively...I'd say even moreso than Nash...

how many of you would have believed that going into the year? That's why I still have hopes for this team, the likelyhood that 3 studs like Nash, Richards, and Gaborik will all be "cold" to varying degrees is highly unlikely.

Nash has been great, but he's gone long stretches of not playing well himself. He's got the ability to carry a team..as does Gabby, as does Richards. we need to start having all 3 firing at the same time, then we'll FINALLY see the team we all thought we were signing up for.

I dunno, I think Gaborik is maybe "done" for at least this year in terms of his gamebreaking ability. His shot seems noticeably worse than in years past and he's just fighting it all the time, and he rarely gets good shots on net anymore. I don't know that I'd say he's done for good as a NHL goal scorer, something just seems off with him this year and I feel like maybe that shoulder injury impacted his game more than we'd like to think

Stepan seems infinitely stronger along the boards and on his stick. He was pickpocketing everyone last night and not getting pushed off the puck along the boards.

For the supposed slowest player in the league, he sure was all over the ice.
