The guy is 30 years old with a lot of hockey under his belt. Regardless of what some may say or believe, he was never elite to begin with so it's very likely his best games are behind him. I'm not saying he's washed up, but he's not the player whose worthy of that contract and certainly not going to be the guy who leads his team to the promised land. People need to stop expecting these 30+ year old players to be who they were in their mid 20s. These guys aren't robots.

lol

Always good when people come out of the woodwork with God awful takes that are completely out to lunch.

Reminds me of Duchene, only ever plays well and to his potential when it’s a contract year

Gaudreau being this controversial and divisive on HFBoards is crazy. People have been praying on his downfall for almost a decade.

Anyway, everyone knew the Columbus move would go sideways. They’ve never been a serious organization and they had no idea what to do after he fell into their lap.

Hiring Babcock is their move to lift themselves up from the basement? Really? Having Gaudreau flank Boone Jenner? I never thought he makes it to year 3 of that contract in Columbus, and he’s certainly on track to be traded
Jenners not great and yet still has more goals in less games than Gaudreau…

Who the hell would accept Gaudreau at this rate outside of a trade back to Calgary for Huberdeau?

The most reasonable or likely scenario would probably be trying to facilitate a trade to Philly. Question is do they (Briere, Torts) want him at this point.

Had a career year and is now back to totals that align more with the rest of his NHL seasons?
Came here to say this.

He has skill but isn't fast enough at top speed to overcome his lack of size and predictive play.

Like many players one could say "man he would be a superstar if he was 2 inches taller and or 15 lbs heavier."

He is also on the back 9 of his career and has needed his linemates to be excellent for Johnny Hockey to look better.

So yes he is kinda cooked.

Yeah he is only second in scoring to Kucherov in his draft year and point per game guy for 4 years.

But he never played well. He would have been Gretzky if he played well?

Hiding in CBJ until Philly gets their shit together which honestly might be a lot sooner than people thought.

Johnny Gaudreau has had 2 contract seasons thus far.

For both contract seasons, I just pulled the numbers for his scoring for each season immediately preceding and immediately after the signing and compared it to the actual contract year:

Initial Contract:
67 points per 82 games average the season before and after the contract season compared to 81 points per 82 games in his actual contract season (+14 in his contract season).

Second (current) Contract:
74 points per 82 games average the season before and after the contract season compared to 115 points per 82 games in his actual contract season (+41 in his contract season).

That is 6 seasons in total tracked above.

Out of those 6 seasons tracked, his 2 best seasons were his contract seasons.

Team stat followed that up with a minus 33 next season, my 2 cents he was the man in Calgary with the entire spotlight on him, loved and adored which kept him motivated, leaves town for Columbus with no fanfare no one cares mentally tuned out from Johnny Hockey to Johnny Sucky JMO.
Johnny Sucky! That's pretty good, you need to trademark that shit!

Gaudreau has always been inconsistent.

He has had 3 seasons where he finished top 10 in points and there was a 3 year gap between each of them. His last one was in 2021-22. That means he should be due for his next one in 2024-25 :sarcasm:

In all seriousness, I wouldn't be surprised if he had one last hurrah as an elite point producer in the next few years. But I also wouldn't be surprised if his elite years are behind him like many other players heading into their early to mid 30s.

If I were a betting man though, I would go with the former. He has a high hockey IQ, great hands, and excellent mobility (which should help with avoiding plays leading to injury). Not to mention he's pretty non-physical. In theory, that should age well. But we'll see.

Watching him play, there really isn't that much variation in his effort level or ability. He's always creating.

His linemate situation matters more than most. If he's getting double teamed he can't score much. Gaudreau with great linemates, that's how you end up with the most 5v5 points in a season in a quarter century.

Well. He likely will never be a 100 points player again.
What a miserable ordeal that became for both clubs; it's shitty because it was all working in Calgary. He was the cornerstone franchise guy that got the sponsorship love in town.

He was in a pretty perfect situation, playing on a line with Tkachuk and Lindholm, supported by the Calgary transition blue line. You have to think, if he stay in Calgary, Tkachuk likely doesn't jump ship either. Can't change the past. Gaudreau wastes the remaining prime years of his career on a fledging club, and the Flames are facing the reality of a rebuild.

Good call, only has 9 points in 10 games since then.
All while being a minus player almost every game still, no hits, no blocks.

Yea, it was absolutely the right move to dump this bum for T. Moore who has 8 points in 6 games and hits, blocks shots and his a plus player.
