The most reasonable or likely scenario would probably be trying to facilitate a trade to Philly. Question is do they (Briere, Torts) want him at this point.
Philly wouldn’t want anything but do with him. They gave enough long term contracts for older guys and Gaudreau probably wouldn’t get along with Torts

I find it interesting that putting down people is not tolerated but putting down entire cities is ok. Neither is good in my books. Nothing productive can come of it. Just like getting invited to a dinner and telling your host you hate the food.
Location checks out.....just kidding but the reality is that certain players and their families prefer some cities over others for different reasons.

Heck the stupid salary cap exists in part because of this reality.

That is so not true. Do you often go around making up bullshit like this?
He was conflicted, right up until the 11th hour, on whether to stay or leave. He loved playing and living in Calgary. Calgary is a beautiful city located in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies and the people are really friendly. In the end he left because his wife, who was pregnant at the time, wanted to live closer to her parents.
So did Johnny. I think if covid never happens he's still in Calgary. But both of them being shut off from their families ENTIRELY with a baby on the way basically eliminated living in Canada for both of them.

The 28-year-old explained how important family was in his decision to move out of Alberta and closer to his hometown of Salem, New Jersey.

"As much as I love hockey … family is everything to me. It’s the most important connection I have," Gaudreau wrote. "And a few years ago, I think I started to realize how much you sacrifice when you give 100 percent to your career. I felt like I needed to do more to center my family in my life after we experienced some hard times."
Gaudreau mentioned how his father's heart attack in 2018 made him realize how little time he'd been able to spend around his loved ones since he entered the NHL in 2014. His wife, Meredith, who is expecting the couple's first child, is also from the Jersey Shore area.

"As much as we both love Calgary, I think Meredith and I just felt that it was going to be very hard to continue living as far away from our families as we’ve been living — especially as we’re starting a family of our own," he wrote.
Sorry it just drives me crazy when people are like " it was his wife! She's the reason! When they made that decision as a family
Not cooked but victim of current system/team identity.

That contract and Laines together are pretty horrid though.

9 goals and 22 pts in 43 games for $18.5 mil combined in cap. That's really bad.
Johnny's contract is just fine. And Laine has been struggling since his concussion, not that he looked like he was a superstar before it but he was at least looking okay.

The cap is rising 4M next season and another large jump the following season. The year after that Laines contract expires. It's not perfect, but it's not because of Gaudreau.

Agree with this.

Sorry but the term, amount and age and type of player Johnny is (empty points and little else) makes his contract a bad one.luckily the Jackets have some good young pieces that it probably won't hurt them too much.

There's no reality where a player coming off a 100 point season doesn't get the contract Gaudreau got...

Sure I get that but most GMs would have looked at that and thought why reward the past with future money and not future performance given his age ect...

Gaudreau, for how much of a super star offensive talent he can be, has pretty crazy swings based on his environment. Same thing happened in Calgary. He had his 99 point season. Then Calgary’s offense stunted and his running mate Monahan got devastated by injuries. He would go on to back to back seasons with a 60ish point pace. Then Tkachuk took the next step in his development, Lindholm started playing some of his best hockey, Calgary looked alive again, and he was back to being one of the best offensive players in the NHL.

Gaudreau just seems to need a lot of help to do what he does best. I imagine in a couple season when Fantilli/Johnsson take the next steps in their development and Columbus starts climbing the standings again, he will look much better.

He doesn't need much help, he just needs a legitimate top line center / high end 2C. He's still been a 70-85 point player even without a legit center.

I disagree.

Every GM would have given him that contract if they had the cap space. When you have the opportunity to add a guy who just put up 100 points, you always take that if you can.

Johnny didn't even go to the highest bidder. At least 2 GMs we're willing to give him more than what he got. Most GMs didn't have the cap space to sign him to begin with.

This isn't specific to Johnny but rather the circumstances that most players in his situation before the signing happened.

Sure he had a great year at age 28 but his 2 previous seasons just increase the risk for the future.

Also most players who are 28 (or have that anomly pre UFA season) in their alte 20s and sign long contracts jsut aren't good value.

Every GM tries to think they are the smartest guy in the room and can be the exception but most of these singings simply don't pan out long term.

What else would you have liked Columbus to do with that cap space?

He's still a damn good player, I think people are really misled by the slump he had to start the year and how that skews his stats.

The bad contracts are for bad players, like Gudbranson, Peeke, and currently Laine. There is no problem with Gaudreau. That's not to say he wouldn't be overpaid in some other context, but for the Jackets I wouldn't want him traded.

Would have been nice playing with barzal and horvat. Still think he has the goods but life is pretty comfy for him right now I suspect.

I don’t agree with this. Look at Panarin for example. Does he have a legitimate top line center? Nope. He has had to play with Trocheck for 2 seasons now. Yet he is putting up close to 100 points every season regardless of that.

Gaudreau, while I do like him, does seem to need quite a bit of help around him. He is not much of a scoring threat so for him to get to over a point per game, he does need a great scorer on his line to help Gaudreau get those high assist totals.

Panarin is a great player, but he also plays on a loaded PP. His ES production hasn't been all that impressive the last few years.

You mean like when he carried Sean Monahan all those years?

Zibanejad, Trochek and Kreider are the other forwards on NYRs 1st PP unit. I don’t think many neutral fans would say that’s ‘loaded’, at least from a raw talent perspective or on paper.

Powerplay primarily runs through Panarin. Because unlike Gaudreau, he’s a true dual threat to snipe from distance or set up, and commands a ton of attention with the way he handles the puck in traffic

It’s not like RNH feasting off Oilers PP, he’s the primary mover…

I'm not saying he's not the driver of that PP, but that's absolutely a loaded PP. Kreider is arguably the best net front guy in the league, and Zib has an incredible one timer and can make plays as well. Add in Adam Fox, and it's pretty clearly a loaded PP.

Artemi Panarin has shown the greatest ability to carry weak talent around him, perhaps greater than any player in the entire league. He turned waiver fodder in Ryan Strome and Jesper Fast into the best line in the league. It doesn't say anything about Gaudreau that he is not Panarin.
