I'm sure he will be a good player , i'm disappointed with the selection and was hoping that we could pick Michkov insted. When you're lucky enough to have a 5th selection in a draft, you dont go and talk like you got a consolation prize, and that's the feeling i get from our management since last night.

At least if they went out and said that to contrary beliefs, they do believe the kid's got exponential untapped potential and can easily become a #1D both defensively and offensively, that'd give us hope of something. But man, to come out and say that the kid might not have what it takes to run a PP...so what will he become? A Seabrook? Adam Larsson? Some people compared him to Suter but Suter played on the 1st PP and played like 29 mins per game. That's a very disappointing and gut wrenching thing to say from management

Maybe his red flags are really obvious to the professionals that have watched him play since he was a kid, have reliable intel from his club, and have had the opportunity to do an in-person interview with him? Seems possible.

i'm sure you're right , that been said ( and they probably tried , we'll never know ) If you have the 5th pick and your guy is not there anymore , then you work the phone and do your best to make a trade. Get the best value for the 5th and draft a few spots later to eventually draft Reinbacher.

I don't dislike Reinbacher but I was one of the rare weirdos who said we should have drafted a D last year instead of Slaf or Wright, looking at last year's class and this year's class, and drafted a forward this year. And oh and behold, they drafted for position this year even though Hughes went on the defensive when asked about it. Should have drafted a D last year. Also Ds take longer to develop. What a waste.

All I know is I'd rather have Jiricek/Nemec-Michkov over Salf-Reinbacher.

Fair point well made. I was on the Nemec train last year. Not a slight on either Slaf or Reinbacher, but we could have Nemec & Michkov, which is much sexier.

However, I do respect the viewpoint that says that we already have Caufield to play the role of small 40+ goal scorer and doubling down on small pure offensive players isn't a great recipe for playoff success. I also note the MOAR SIZE discrepancy between the team with Nemec & Michkov vs the team with Slaf (who will likely develop into a 2A winger with physical dominance) and Reinbacher.

Like it or not, size still matters. I think I've defeated my own arguement. Bollocks to it,

Michkov scored 8 points in 2 games vs. the worst team in the KHL, if you take away those loser points, his production isn't as impressive

Even without those 8 points, he's close in ppg to other Russian greats like Ovy, at 18 in the KHL. To be fair, you'd have to also look back on how many points Ovy got against the worst teams and Michkov would end up on top.

almost the same as the russian Dman selected just before him. Zadina's highlights in 2018 were just as good as Michkov's if you think about it.

Completely ridiculous take. Zadina always scored the same way and had one move he always did. Michkov is much more versatile. I pointed out Zadina's lack of offensive versatility when people here wanted to draft him. Your comparison tells me you haven't really watched either of them.

That's like if I joined a kids soccer team and scored a hatbtrick every game. I did it against low competition.

The Swiss league is the 4th best pro league in the world, and at worst 5th right behind Finland. It's stronger this year than in recent years too because it's full of imports from western countries that used to be in the KHL.

League quality does not directly correlate to how good a country's national team is when there are 6-7 imports on every team.

Reinbacher would’ve been gone at 6th. He was Arizona’s guy, too.

We have Hutson who could do it. Or they both can together, who knows.

I think Reinbacher is getting way underrated. He produced similar points to Leo Carlsson as a defenseman playing in a comparable league (maybe even a better league), while logging #1 defenseman minutes and playing solid d.

I get that centers tend to go high, but I really think Reinbacher is a similar tier to Carlsson who went #2. Why are all the other teams given a free pass for not drafting Michkov but the Habs made out like they were the only ones who passed on him? I definitely prefer Reinbacher to Will Smith - the Sharks took Smith over Michkov and that's seen as a non-story for some strange reason.

Honestly that's the thing I've found strange. I wonder if people just legit have no idea that the Swiss league is at worst widely considered in the same tier as Liiga. Even if you've never seen him play just the raw 22P in 46 games is a pretty intriguing profile for a draft year RD with size who isn't cheating for offence.

Like if this dude was Finnish instead and had 22P in Finland would the reaction be different? I have to assume so at this point. I think ppl just have this idea that the Swiss league is on par with the DEL or something.
