No one sees him as generational except for you and the other deluded fanboys on this board. If he was generational, he would’ve went ahead of Bedard because not everyone even considers Bedard to be generational. Generational prospects don’t get drafted 7th overall. I’ve never seen so many dumb takes on this board before the last couple months. This place went absolutely nuts over a small Russian winger who went 7th lmao.
Actually multiple source have said he is the player with the 2nd highest ceiling. But the difference between him and Fantilli, Carlsson and Smith wasn’t big enough to take the risk with the ceiling.

You can call him like you want, franchise player, generational, what ever… but 95+ pts potential is much better then anything the Habs have had in 30 + years.

Hughes identified Reinbacher as a potential 2D. But the floor was higher, say 3rd pair D.

So I guess you agree that you rather not risk a 3rd pair D, to move the ceiling from 2D to superstar. Again, call him what you want but his potential is 95+ pts.

I guess now is the time for you to say that his ceiling is not 95+ pts. But every thing I have seen and read on him says he had the 2 nd highest ceiling and last year they’d were debating if it was the highest.

So you can try to play your known-it-all but if your logic would stand, the player with the 2ns hugest upside would not go 7th.

Guess what. He did. Guess what, every draft teams outthink themselves and a player falls and he shouldn’t. Caufield, Barzal, Forsberg, etc…. But by your “logic” it was just magic, no one ever made a mistake. Sure dude. Cool story.

Michkov scored 8 points in 2 games vs. the worst team in the KHL, if you take away those loser points, his production isn't as impressive, almost the same as the russian Dman selected just before him. Zadina's highlights in 2018 were just as good as Michkov's if you think about it. I expect Reinbacher to be the #2 Dman and Hudson #1 but really what does that mean if they play a different role which is as important as the other? I think we'll have a good first pairing!
The worse team in the KHL is better than the best team Bedard has faced. What you think about that?

I don't like that you guys got Reinbacher. This means he's an awesome player. ;) You' guys will be happy about this pick in 1-2 years. Good pick, congrats!

Thanks about that! Do you think that he can reach the level of play like Heiskanen or Seider?

Four Russians were taken in the 1st round. True two of them were Arizona but even when asked, teams said the geopolitical situation didn't play a factor. It ultimately came down to "we never saw him play" which is kind of valid, don't you think?
I think Michkov having a three year contract is a valid concern. I think not seeing him play live is also valid. Although I’m surprised the Habs don’t have a local Russian scout and/or Bobrov couldn’t have popped back home for a bit. I even think his size and speed is valid to an extent. (I didn’t think him being conscripted into the army and that kind of baloney was valid like some spouted around here but that’s a different story).

The point is I believe his talent outshone those valid concerns. Especially, in comparison to the other talent available at 5. I would have taken a little less talent in the likes of Fantilli or carlsson in exchange for less valid concerns (although I could name a few valid concerns for them too). Clearly other teams felt the same. But at 5 the option was to take a lot less talent for less valid concerns in my opinion. The Habs either didn’t believe his talent outshone those concerns, or and what’s seeming likely based on Hughes comments, they drafted more based on need. Which is a shame.

That’s my POV on it. We’re a better team with Reinbacher than without him. As we would be with any 5th overall pick but it’s left me hoping we somehow tank again next year because we didn’t get what I thought we needed.

I think they're trying to build a collective instead of a bunch of individuals. Another reason I'm assuming they didn't want PLD. Habs have a fully complete D core now for the next decade plus. I think they'll make a push for Sorokin, etc in 2024 FA. Not the team we as a fanbase initially wanted but they're looking to build an equally effective defensively staunch team
No. Too expensive to acquire (Dach ++) and payload. And it seems now that PLD was not that enticed to play in MTL anymore.

Faille, a Quebec born guy who is a vet with Kloten, has played two full seasons with Reinbacher. He said the kid is a quick learner who has progressed every single game he has played so far with their Swiss League Team. At 18, he was their go to guy on D.

2 years of misery and we have Slaf and Reinbacher to show for it. Not Mathews and Marner, Stamkos and Hedberg, Crosby and Malkin, Kane and Toews, McDavid and Draistl. Slaf and Reinbacher.

FML. This franchise is cursed.
To be fair, Marner and Matthews have been a tease themselves. McDavid and Drasiatl are superstars and have done nothing. It’s super hard to get the types of players you mentioned without tanking. And it’s not always guaranteed. We’re taking a needed gamble but it doesn’t mean it will turn out great. We just half to stay calm. We need to hit an unlikely home run which we still could.

some bad luck , we got the first overall in the wrong year. Ah well.
The reinbacher move is classic hughes move though. Sigh. A problem the habs have created.

Because, there was no players of that caliber around.... Nobody here saw Michkov plays. 6 teams did not draft him. They must know a bit or two more than you. Did you have an interview with him recently ? The Habs just had the "dishonour" of drafting 5th when Michkov was still available. If Michkov is gone and Habs draft Reinbacher anyway, do you complain ?

Best Player Available is a thing people love to say, but there's an element of "need" in every draft pick, no matter the round.

The Ducks, Blue Jackets and Sharks wanted a center...that was an organizational need for all of them.
Center carry significant value especially 6'2/6'3 offensive superstar center. Don't tell me Anaheim or San Jose did not need a defenseman also? They went for BPA at it was the center.

We need a TEAM. And that's what they are building. Not just a one-pony show.

Anaheim doesn't need d-men at all. They've got tons of excellent ones in the pipeline. But they had no centermen. San Jose too needs to build through the middle.

You can't really compare. I would like to know what was the level of intensity of the worst team in the KHL when they faced off vs. the level of the intensity of the OHL's best team when they faced off. It's deeper than you think, maybe the KHL's worst team got drunk in Sochi the night before Michkov scored 4 points, Sochi is Russia's Vegas after all, nice weather, the black sea resorts, it was an Olympic city for that reason. But back on topic Reinchacher played against men too and scored about 0.5 ppg as a dman and according to one of his French-Canadian teammates they interviewed on RDS he ran the PP.

Look at their defense and tell me with a straight face they would not want a Josi right handed defenseman in their team. You think they do not have good centerman either with Zegras and McTavish.

If they were high on Reinbacher they would have traded down with Columbus and got the D but they prefered to get their guy (who is BPA for them)

They have Luneau, Zellwegger and the Russian kid (Mintyukov) coming up. Zegras is NOT a C.

man why does Reinbacher look so much like Mike McCarron. Makes me hate the pick even more lol

Hughes isn’t even trying to hit a home run though. That’s my biggest issue with the pick this year. At least with Slaf I got the vision. He swung for the fences. Reinbacher?

So, If I follow your drift, Anaheim must had drafted Reinbacher at #2.... So It means, Habs grabbed the second best player of the draft, right ?:sarcasm:
If you follow my drift they went fot BPA and that player for them is Carlsson. If they thought Reinbacher was better they would have selected him.

Habs selected the player they feel is the better player in the longrun.

My assumption the Habs also had Bedard, Carlsson, Fantilli and Smith above Reinbacher too.

Maybe? Who knows, we only watched highlights, and we don't know how these players will develop, stranger things happen every day.
