He said he will let the Canadiens decide. But he did say he would like to go finish his school. So I think chances are he goes back to Switzerland for one more year.
It's logical given our depth at D. We've rushed some forwards in the past but we were also bankrupt of talent in that area.

This pick means that management thinks that a center line up of Suzuki, Dach, Newhook, and Evans is enough to contend when the time comes. We the fans may disagree, but it’s obvious that’s what management is thinking. It also means they think Reinbacher can become a #1 D in the NHL; they wouldn’t have picked him if they thought he was anything less.

After thinking it over, and coming to this conclusion, I don’t hate the pick as much as I thought. A lot hinges on the potential of the players mentioned above though, and that’s a lot of ifs:

•If Suzuki continues developing and becomes a legit 1C

•If Dach develops into a 2C or better

•If Newhook can add some defense, grit, or utility (faceoffs) to his game to become a solid 3C (his production is borderline 3C level already)

•If Reinbacher becomes a legit two-way #1D

Those are the big ones. Will every one of those happen? Probably not, but if two or three of those are realized, we are in very good shape because the team has been stockpiling depth at all positions and some of the other prospects and young players not mentioned here will pan out.

One thing is for sure though; the prospect pool is extremely deep at the D and W positions. And maybe we add an elite C prospect next year.

The rebuild is going well, imo. No need to freak out over one pick.

No it doesn’t, it just means they thought Reinbacher was a better option than any remaining C. If Michkov was a centre maybe they’d have drafted him. If Smith was still available maybe they’d have drafted him.

Probably
Guhle -Mailloux
Hutson-Reinbacher
A defensively responsible d-man like Reinbacher (with his own untapped offensive potential) can also let Hutson be that offensive dynamo we expect him to be. So this is a two-fer for me.

He also reminds me of where Guhle was at the same time that we drafted him and Guhle is also trending to be a #1 D-man.

And a lot of us forget that Matheson is also just hitting his stride and Mailloux and Barron are both very young and very offensive D that need to work on making better defensive decisions which can come with time.

Lets wait and see what this development crew can do with our very mobile D. I dont think we'll be Buffalo or New Jersey on the back end but we could end up having a very promising, very mobile blue line for the next decade

If you are a professional, you are paid to get talent. If a player, that everyone sees a generational, is passed over because you didn’t evaluate him correctly, you suck and should be fired.

Oh? Everyone sees him as generational now? That is a big word to throw around.... Or maybe.... hmmmm.... maybe YOU don't know everything that they do about him, did it ever occur to you it could be the case?

I mean, I understand you are upset, but frankly, all these temper rages on a day you don't even know yet if the guy would really be that great is a bit ridiculous. "Let's fire everyone! Bla bla bla!"

I've been wondering the exact same. I would even add Anderson to that mix of players.
I think Anderson's value is hurt by flat cap. IMO he's a must trade for next summer when all the teams get new money and hopefully he has a career year this coming season.

Yah. The d pipeline is pretty full. Someone will have to go.
This is why, I was thinking they were thinking a forward.............really surprised but finding info on the Dman has made some pretty promising upside, so we will wait this one out..............ala Slafkosky.
Patience is a tough thing to practice...........especially after dealing with a clown GM for 10 years prior our current regime.

That must be it because teams always slightly overpay for players of anderson's style.

He's coming to camp. Do you think any decisions will be made before the fact? He Talked about going to back to school but Montreal may have other plans.
We also learned he's a headhunter so hopefully we can teach him to stay out of the box. :sarcasm:
we dont know yet. Reinbacher did say he wants to go back to finish his degree but that he's open to coming too.
I wouldn't be surprised if he plays for Montreal, it's the usual development path Habs management takes with top picks.
hes under contract for another year but he has an NHL clause if he can make the Habs ( doubt he does )

Listen, if you live under a rock that is not my problem. A majority of scouts and reports said he has the potential. None of them said it’s 100%.

Also, I didn’t say fire everyone. I said if he come over and burns the league, fires them.

He's probably referring to Twitter, where players can receive a ton of hate and people can harass and wish them bad things.

Here, we only talk about the hockey side and we give our opinion, we vent on things we don't like. I doubt they even know that we exist.

Agreed, so many fans have no chill on social media it's embarassing frankly.

Been reading up on this pick and not sure what to think. I don't think I would have taken him 5th overall and as many have mentioned it makes an already crowded backend even more so. The team has what now 6 potential NHL ready or close to ready dmen aged 23 or under? I guess they can take their time and maybe get him over to North America to start.

Most hot takes in here think Michkov will hit his best case at 100pts or 40-40 and Bacher worst case as a 3rd pair.

A more tempered scenario with Bacher as a 2nd pair RD and Michkov a 30-30 a la Debrincat doesn't exist in their minds.

For reference Chychrun/Debrincat cost the Sens about the same, 1 top 12 1st and 2 2nds.

Yeah it seems like 5 other teams didn’t see him as generational.

The premise that Reinbacher has a low ceiling is silly. Very few have produced like him in the Swiss league at his age. He’s not the sexy pick but I get it

We don't know what the dynamic is but if Michkov was a no go it was possibly a CEO/Sponsorship decision and not hockey ops.
So they drafted Mailloux but wouldn't draft Michkov because of sponsors... right...

I could live a lot better with the decision to pass on him if they had actually gone with any other pick than the "safe, steady" no. 2-3 D. Based on what I read I would have liked Leonard but whatever, they are the ones being paid to do the hockey stuff and will have to live with their choice.

Would prefer Hutson with someone "older"
And Mailloux will have a lot to show and prove before we start gluing him next to Guhle (who I can't say enough about as a 2way D)
I’d really like to see Barron & Guhle for a season or at least 40+ games. The other pairing that could be dynamic in a few years is Xhekaj & Mailloux? I’ll enjoy watching these 4 but either way we have a beastly looking D- core coming soon to a rink near you.

He was though

I mean the team after us was going to draft him
The team after us is not indicative of where the BPA was. Arizona reached for a D that was ranked near the end of the first round.

Doesn’t look to me that they are the reference point.

What’s far more telling is that this was a rare elite offensive talent that 5-6 teams made several attempts to get at. And how the Habs have not had a talent of this calibre in more than 30 years.

As good as Reinbacher could be, the shadow cast by missing out on Michkov is likely going to haunt this management contingent over the rest of their tenure.

The callers to BPM this morning were livid. They’re starved for an offensive superstar and feel that Hughes flubbed. No degree of apologism is going to change the fact that Hughes is on record that he was selecting the BPA and it doesn’t look like he made good on that promise.

I have a question for people who saw him play. How did he get such great numbers while at the same time being somewhat offensively limited in terms of ceiling?

Like did he get a bunch of secondary assists on a red hot power play or is his ability to find open lanes extraordinary?

I have trouble conflating the reportedly low offensive tools with the best offence numbers in a jacked up Swiss league since Dahlin
