Is it too late to trade the #5 for Keller? They have gone for need over BPA. Reinbacher is not a bad pick. He is kinda like Guhle. But Michkov is the superior player... why habs why....

I don't think they went for need. I think they went for who they thought was the superior player.

- I don't think they were concerned about size (they just traded for Newhook).
- I don't think they were concerned about the Russian factor.
- Only thing Hughes has said is they didn't like that they didn't get to see him play, whereas the followed Reinbacher closely all year.

I think he said he would like to finish school or something but if the Habs decide he plays in the AHL next season, he'll play in the AHL.
Yup, said the Habs would decide what was best for him and he’ll go with that.

I don’t want him in Montreal but I’m wondering between AHL and Swiss league whT would be best for his development??

I’m really not sure

According to this they did take the BPA.

From The Athletic:
Montreal native and hockey data expert Thibaud Chatel works extensively with teams in Switzerland tracking data and providing detailed analytics to his clients and subscribers. His service, NL Ice Data, tracked 22 of Reinbacher’s games with Kloten, and came to the following conclusion.
“To get deeper, we also have a prospects model, which looks at every player from 16 to 22 and projects their potential career (until) they reach 30 years old. On this one, Reinbacher was simply the second-best player in the draft behind (Connor) Bedard, with a 52 percent chance of being an ‘Elite’ (top 10 percent) player in the league on average during the next decade.”
Good to know, but that’s one model, and its projecting from a 22 game sample. I’d be curious to see validation data (i.e., this model being applied to players drafted 15-20 years ago to see how it fares.)

We were never picking Michkov unless someone at the top really wanted him. None of our scouts saw him live and we literally have no Russian regional scout. So it would be the expectation that none of them would bother to bat for Michkov. Picking Michkov would have required the GM/President/Owner to overwrite the decision over the scouting team.

That reflects badly on the scouting team then.

And in 2023, after the pandemic, if you're not able to evaluate such a potentially important player in person, you should be able to remotely.

He's only a season away, whether it be back in Kloten or with Laval. I'm sure they'll go with what is best for him development wise, both options are good IMO. Selfishly, I'd like to see him in Laval so I can see a lot more of him live, but he's playing big minutes in the NL and he'll only get more next season.

This is why I LOL at those who were championing for a schcorched-earth rebuild for the last few years.

The team has been historically bad for the last two years and they traded actual, good NHLers to get into a favorable draft position...

To get players that may not even turn out to be better than the ones they gave away, or that they could have drafted a few sports later anyway.

Let's hope they saw something in David that "media" scouts didn't because they definitely passed on very good offensive players to get a "steady" 2nd D.

Oh yes, I forgot that part. He didn't want to let go of the job. He should butt out of hockey decisions, because I'm sure he still makes some the way things go at times.
I called for him to fire himself like 9 years ago. I was hoping with Gorton coming in he would butt out and was only keeping the title so he could cut himself a check. We don't know what the dynamic is but if Michkov was a no go it was possibly a CEO/Sponsorship decision and not hockey ops. Anyone who complains about it has no clue how the Corporate level functions and isn't responsible for two powerful brands.

Reinbacher text book reason why this organization hasn't been able to win 30 years. Why Chicago and Kings won 3 cups each recently. Bebard...Dubois, notice the difference? Need the stars to win a cup
Err...how is he a text book reason why they haven't won in 30 years but Chicago has three?
Last I checked, the Habs didn't get chances like...
#1 of rd 1 Bedard
#1 of rd 1 Kane
#3 of rd 1 Toews

Oh and LA has only 2 cups to their name and also helps that they picked Doughty #2 of rd 1.

Not overly impressed with this pick. I really thought the Habs should have swung for the fences with Michkov. Reinbacher isn't a terrible pick, but I see him more as a 2nd pair type. With the 5th overall pick you want to draft an impact core player. I don't think Reinbacher is that. It's hard not to be a little disappointed.

I was okay with the pick but reading more into it I'm loving the pick.

That being said I've been keeping track of drafts on this board since 2012/13 with Galchenyuk.

There's litterally no point in making an argument now none of us have seen them play or will actually know how it goes.

Excited to see him at training camp though, that usually is a good indicator if we made the right choice.

Then again.. Suzuki wasn't all that when he first made it to training camp. Now look at him in 2021 playoffs he was a BEAST amongst men in the NHL

So the Hughes thinks this team doesn’t need more talent up front. Suzuki, Dach, Caufield, Newhook. That’s it people.

I actually hate his answer.

No, what he is saying is that they didn't feel the need to reach on an offensive player because they like the talent already in house and conceivably didn't think they'd be adding someone at the top that was an improvement over their projections of those players.

One thing that people need to try to reconcile a bit here is that the generational forward label attached to Michkov may not have persisted since his 16 year old season, the same way it did not persist for Shane Wright in his draft year.

Either 6 teams thought they were picking generational talents, or nobody actually felt he was a generational forward any longer. There were more than enough quotables from scouts who felt he was more Tarasenko than Ovechkin.. I don't think anyone thinks Tarasenko is generational.
Was listening to Friedman on the NHL network and then Whyshinski on TSN 690… Mich met with Philly on multiple occasions. The sense on the draft floor was that’s where he wanted to go. If true, it helps to explain a lot in terms of why there was so much secrecy around him.

The question becomes: do you draft a player you know doesn’t really want to play for you? Especially when there are the Russian complications. That’s very likely the issue Hughes was facing.

Like I said, we have to reconcile that maybe Michkov isn't seen as a generational prospect or player. Projections change as players develop. There's countless examples of that being the case. Shane Wright literally happened last year.
Are you paid by the team to defend them like you have been doing?

Seriously, if Michkov comes over and burns the league the whole team of management should be fired.

My issue with his answer isn’t that he thinks our current offence guys have room to grow, but rather that he felt that the D was a more pressing need, from which we can conclude he drafted based on need.

So many uncertainties with Michkov being a Russian. Not so much with Reinbacher. I prefer a safe pick. Habs made the right choice.
I agree. And you know what, while I was initially unhappy not to get the next best forward, the more I look into this guy the more I like what I see. I have a very good feeling about this kid.

So he should have picked Leonard then.

Or maybe.... *gasp*..... they may trade for a forward later with some of our multiple D prospects...?

So much knee-jerk reactions about this, my god, how bad we look as a fanbase from the outside today
