Well, they need his approval so it could be.

I vividly remember Molson doing the "I'm sorry" PR dance, in panic, after the sponsors called him out publicly (led by St-Hubert) after the Mailloux pick. The whole thing was very humiliating.

I think at this point, since he's probably marked by the experience, he has become a liability for this organization from his PR risk-aversion. Like a boxer who had been knocked out too brutally, and is hesitant to go for it in the ring after that.

10 years from now Hughes is going to tell the story of "how Mithkov's interview was so bad that the scouts wanted to fight him"
And that’s the part we don’t know. Maybe they found something out or he was an idiot in the interview…

If we assume for that Michkov wasn’t there, then this pick makes way more sense. I’d be okay with us taking him over say… Leonard. The reason people are pissed is because we didn’t take the potential franchise scorer. Apart from that, I don’t think you’d get the anger we’re seeing now.

So, the question is why not Mich? I don’t think it’s him being Russian or having to wait. There’s got to be more to it.

It’s going to be interesting to see how this goes. If he shows up and dominates… it’s going to sting for a long time. If he comes in and is merely ‘good’ then it makes it far more palatable.

Speaking of Molson, I don't know all the owners, so is he the only fanboy owner that goes to all these events looking like he needs control of it all?
Molson is still the President of Hockey Operations as Gorton is VP. He technically still has the final say in hockey matters. I personally think that he takes Gorton's word now and isn't as involved as he was when Bergevin was in charge. I can't see Gorton going for a non hockey guy continuing over ruling him.

I want to thank the servers or this board to not crash, even me in distance in my far away little village, being able to post here without major problem. Maybe it's possible because many posters left the board and are drunk to the bone now. They will get back to life tomorrow late morning with a big headache. Our team doesn't make PO, doesn't tank properly but this board site works. Hey, that's good news !

At the same time, he pays them. So ya, he has a say.

Montreal
They were special.

And hearing Danny Gallivan’s voice describe them was magical. “A Savardian Spinnerama, at the Blueline,” “Larry Robinson picks up speed behind his net, around one Bruin, dipsy doodles past another, and lets loose with a cannonading drive….” “Lapointe moves the puck rather gingerly behind the net”

Everyone (from that era) remembers when Robinson beat the shit out of Hammer Schultz, but few remember that Big Serge also got mad one night and beat Schultz rather handily as well. Pointu was a lot better with his gloves on than off but wouldn’t back down either.
Robinson also turned a Bruins series around when some one ended up pissing him off maybe Stan Jonathan.

For that to happen, Mailloux and Hutson will need to correct their defensive deficiencies. We are not there yet. So yes, it's potentially there. But not a gimme.
I think their defensive deficiencies are over stated. They aren’t perfect, but Guhle and Reinbacher are there to hide their faults- while Hutson and Mailloux provide the potentially high end offence.

We have need for a RHD that is a concrete fact, in fact on paper it is our biggest need.
If we could have a goalie as good as Carey available, I think he would have been the bpa. We don't have wingers explosive talent and no good defensive center either. Well, I was in the idea that we needed everything.

I wasn't referring to the relationship between Molson and HuGo, but more about the transcendental aspect of the Montreal Canadiens business, that is more than a pure business and also belong to the cultural zeitgeist of the people in Quebec and beyond. Owning this team is a privilege.

If like I believe Molson has gotten too risk-aversed, he should sell the team to a more aggressive owner. Or just nationalize the franchise like Hydro-Québec.

That would be underwhelming for a 5th overall, wouldn't it?

Hard to quantify the effect of a Desjardins clone as his overall contribution is greater than the stat sheet would suggest. I have previously compared him to Hanifin as well which would be underwhelming at 5 OA in a stacked draft.

This pick may not age well in the court of public opinion but dmen are notoriously difficult to project. If he ends up as a decent 2nd pair RHD it will not be a good look but if he becomes a legit #1 RHD then it will be more than fine....I suspect he ends up somewhere in between and will be the center of much consternation on this board for years to come.

He isn't the pick that I wanted but I can live with it and move on as he is a great fit.

Eric Desjardins at a "in a vacuum" 5th overall would be a great pick. He was a #1 defenseman for over 15 years.

In a vacuum ignores who else was available, of course.
