Mailloux needs to spend all year in the A he still has alot to learn specially defensively he often looks lost

I rather him play big minutes with the Rocket

Mailloux needs to play at the appropriate level at all times just like any player. I agree that he should start the season in Laval as even if he does play well in preseason you shouldn't see him playing against NHLers who are coasting in preseason and other junior/minor pros as evidence that he is ready to make the jump.

I really don't like when fans say stuff like you must keep him in the AHL for the entire season as that is not an evidence based conclusion. Top prospects should stay in the AHL until they have shown that they can sustain a high level of play for a significant duration and are ready to play a similar role in the NHL or at least with the expectation to ramp them up quickly to that role.

Mailloux aint a top prospect maybe if you meant only in our organisation he also missed almost 2 years of hockey because of the suspension and elbow injury hes far from NHL ready i watched him alot in London and he often looked lost defensively he needs a full year in the A to adapt to the pros and to play defence theres no need to rush the kid specially when we already have too many players

He is a top prospect in the organization, there is no rational debate to be had on the topic. Once again you are far from an expert so to claim that he can not possibly be ready at any point this season is just bias driven bluster. The only correct answer is that we don't know when he will be ready but when he is ready he should be brought up when there is an opportunity on the Habs roster to do so. Maybe it happens this season, next season or maybe even never ala Josh Brook, we don't know. Any suggestions that allude to someone already having established fixed dates or limitations is just nonsensical.

With there being a very good chance of Reinbacher playing in Montreal next season I would think that HuGo would be very interested in getting Mailloux's feet wet at some point this season if his play supports such a move.. We have a super young and talented d corps forming and it is imperative that they gain as much experience as possible as soon as possible.

yes sure hes a top 5 prospect on the Habs but will still say hes not NHL ready if he looked lost in the juniors last season he sure wont be ready for the best league a couple weeks later the NHL is alot faster then the juniors

theres no shame and letting him adjust in Laval in a bigger role for the year people always say it takes defenders longer to adjust so let him adjust in Laval we already have Guhle,Matheson,Xhekaj,Harris,Savard,Barron,Kovacevic,Lindstrom and Wideman in Montreal enough with rushing kids let him learn in a bigger role in Laval

He improved dramatically last season and provided evidence that he may do so in Laval as well. He will almost certainly struggle initially and what follows remains to be seen which is why you can't say that he should or shouldn't be called up at some point. It is just a really flawed way of properly projecting development as you are arbitrarily creating a false ceiling for him this season.

You are conflating the term "rushing" with accelerated development and there is no standard or template that can be followed as every player develops differently.

Also, why do you insist on ignoring the injury factor and act like LHD's are blocking him. Your entire narrative is so steeped in extreme bias.

I have no problem at all if he plays the entire season in Laval if he does not demonstrate that he deserves the opportunity or the team stays remarkably healthy and there isn't room for him. I do however have a problem with the ideological assertion that he can not play in Montreal this season as a matter of irrevocable dogmatic certainty.

And, again, I never said he should be playing in Montreal. However, if he makes a case for himself in Laval, by the trade deadline, I see no reason why he shouldn't get promoted to the NHL roster after the deadline, if only to see what the next level looks like and get a sense for what is missing from his game to take the definitive next step.

Like I said, that might even only be in third pairing minutes to shield him at first, with PP duties to see how he stacks against the Big Boys on specialty team situations.

It will give the kid information he needs, at that point, as well as give the team information it needs regarding what it should do with Savard, amongst other things...

100% agree. We have had poor drafting and poor development in past years and some fans think they know how to draft/develop better because Bergevin/Timmins was not good at it.

"Keep him in the AHL for the entire season" is not an actual reality or logical plan GM's do. For example, Barron was sent to AHL last year to work on his reliability game on D, but the narrative in communication to him was not like... you are staying in the AHL for the entire season. Who does that?

This is a performance evaluation league with young players developing. Things are usually fluid and circumstances changes things. The player could perform very well and/or you could have loads of injuries. AHL/NHL seasons just don't go as planed or what you think will happen in Aug. The competition in camp will be tough this time around. I suspect both our split units at the beginning of preseason games will be good rosters battling hard for spots. Should be decent hockey to watch in September IMO.

Please don’t try interposing logic with some fans’ expectations. It’s a losing proposition.

Exactly. You can tell a player that the plan is to start him in the AHL. But you also let him know to come to camp, leave his calling card, and when he goes to Laval, to make sure that when Marty calls Houle on who should be called up, that your name comes up.

I do understand fans saying a player should stay in Laval all year. When we look back at the number of players who were brought up too soon and their development was stunted, you can see why fans want the slow and steady pace. The previous players might have amounted to nothing, but there is still that uncertainty that maybe they would. There's a PTSD element to that point of view and I don't blame people for feeling that way.

The good thing is, the people in place now won't punish you for making a mistake. Whereas before, you'd be benched or healthy scratched if you bungled something.

When people say keep them in the AHL all year, it should be implied that unless of course they play so great you have to move them up.

To me you don't put these kids in the NHL when they have major things to work on. If you skating is average, then you don't belong in the NHL at 18, 19, years old unless you are talking a Crosby, McDavid, type that is just so skilled you have to.

Mailloux with missing so much time, you hope he doesn't get rushed. It shouldn't be well he's doing good but we need a body so call him up to see what he can do. f*** that imo, I never got behind that kind of thinking. I understand that some just need a chance to show what they can do and will rise to the situation but many others won't and that struggle can have a major impact on their confidence due to such young age and lack of life experience.

On the other hand you have guys like Slaf, Reinbacher who already have NHL size, strength so you can see why teams would rush them. I was not a fan of Slaf in the NHL last year and I really hope we don't see Reinbacher in the NHL this season.

exactly of course IF Mailloux impresses so much in the AHL call him up but the chances of that happening are slim i never judge people from the NCAA because i cant watch them but ive watched Logan a ton and i dont see him being so great in the AHL that will need to call him up atleast not this year

I think it's just cope from a decade of Bergevin promoting people the second they went on a 1-game hot streak. The organization might have done better if it had followed a macro like "every player plays 120 games in the AHL."

Those are both bad ideas lo but I do understand what you are saying. I will call out anyone who supports either of those ideas as the right decision is to bring players up when they have demonstrated for an extended period the ability to understand and execute the things that will be asked of them at the next level. Leaving them down because of an arbitrary magical line is just wasting ELC years that ideally would be spent in the NHL.

You might be right about the copium but I am not here to be their enabler and bad ideas require correction.

I have no doubt they would have done better had they kept the kids in the AHL much longer before seeing NHL games. But the question is by how much and would it have been enough to move the needle and that I would say is much less likely to be the case.

I always say outside of injuries, to which I don't count as a player busting, it's usually not just 1 thing that went wrong. I think MANY don't either understand how confidence works in hockey or they underrate just how important it is. But clearly lots of things went wrong, after many years of fans railing about the poor coaching, we see what can happen when you think outside the box and not try to win games 2-1 cause you only have a goalie.

But I do have full PTSD from the MB era as I'm expecting a long haul before we are contenders again. As I get older I start to wonder if I will ever experience another cup win. It should be a lot of fun though seeing how all these prospects turn out.

I was born in 1994. Not sure we win one before I die

I am confident that Hughes will prove to be among the elite GM's in the league and knows how to build a contender but the real issue imo is parity as the difference between most playoff teams is closing and this means a true 4 series gauntlet. It looks like we won't come out of the rebuild with a franchise level elite forward (some prefer "superstar" lol) so unless we get real lucky this team will likely be built around an elite dcorps and a deep, talented forward group much like Carolina or Nashville (We should have a better forward group) at their zenith.

The MSL experiment will be interesting as well as how will the dynamics change when he starts holding players more accountable and how conservative will he become when the games start to really matter.

The thing that I really like about Hughes and Gorton is that they don't subscribe to fan based nonsense like bringing guys up too early of leaving them down for a set period of time regardless of progress. They have a well thought out explanation for everything that they have done so far even if we don't always fully agree, the rationale is always plausible. There is an individual plan for every player and they are progressive in their developmental approach where for the first time I can really see a road to entirely changing a players career as opposed to only expediting the path to a mostly inevitable finishing point.

I love this management group and if we had any luck at all with our timing at the draft things would be looking positively brilliant

So if I understand correctly, the plan is for him to play in Switzerland this year but to attend rookie camp here? Wouldn't he be better off attending his NL team's camp and the start of their season?

He already attended the practices and played 2 pre-season games there. Their season starts september 15th. But yeah, he’ll got back there when his team will already be well into the season, not really ideal.

Well put.

Some seem unwilling or incapable of considering the context the leadership group is working with when assessing their decisions & "success".

Keep all things equal and place a McDavid or Crosby (or Bedard?) in the 2022 draft class and many of the critics would be ready to deify St.Kent.

Thus far, the approach we're seeing gives a lot of confidence that we are finally seeing the Habs develop a culture of excellence. The real test will be, as you point out, how the organization handles the transition from prioritizing development to prioritizing results. For now, lots of grounded evidence yo suggest we are on a great track.

Hopefully Reinbacher stays healthy, makes the most of his potential and in a few seasons, is a cornerstone piece of a contender built from the ground up by a management group solidly recognized as the best in the business.

Future is bright 😎

any chance he plays with the Rocket?

Nemec and Jiricek did pretty good in the A last season and i know management likes to keep players close like Mesar in the OHL

They bet alot on him with #5 so maybe they prefer our coaches over the Swiss league

Only thing is i know nothing about the Laval Rocket so idk if theres space for him
