Hughes never, never had the intention to draft Michkov. His 1st choice , Smith was goane to SJ. He just took the second name on his list: Reinbacher.

Habs have now three real good young prospects on RD: Reinbacher, Mailloux and Barron.

Let’s wait for michkov to come to the nhl , in 3 -4 -5 years before saying all this stuff .
I for one, there is a lot of issues on that front and the habs are well positioned to know so.
As for picking a potential 1d , it is a no brainer in terms of a pick value , over a Leonard for example .

He ain’t but he will be . Wait and see.
We have all the d to compete, and that might be the hardest commodity with or after c.
And at 5 there was no elite c without reaching.

When a mediocre d can be traded for a first plus, then have excess d is always great

Can't build a roster with a dozen centers I don't care how good they are. Some times the best player available is the best available player st the position you need

It is a choice according to need, not according to the best player available…. a roster

That he ain’t. but sshhhh we’re somehow supposed to be gleeful about the insanely dreadful pick that this was.

Hopefully Reinbacher lives up to the hype of being the first D picked. If he compares to someone like Seider or Heiskanen, the choice will be easier to take. Someone on the draft team must have come up with a reason not to draft Michkov. The fact that AZ didn't choose him does not strengthen the case against the latter. Both teams could be wrong.

On the bright side, if we look at many of the teams that perennially compete in the playoffs, like Vegas and Carolina, they tend to be difficult to score against and be effective at insulating their goalie, so that could be the template HuGo have in mind. Willing to reserve judgement for a few years.

No it wasn't. Not at all. People weren't pissed that we chose Price over Kopitar, because that wasn't the situation at all. People were pissed that we took a goalie because we already had a Hart winner in Theodore.

More people wanted Brule.
Fair enough. I was 11 in 2005 so I don't recall it very well. Retroactively would take Kopitar easily.

I had Reinbacher as #6 best player in this draft. Do we see him 1 more season in Swiss or straight to the AHL?
Considering the organizationally philosophy of controlled development I think AHL or NHL.

Though in this case was both , especially if you see issues with the Russian kid.

Look I admire his talent, but I see lots of issues and I am happy mtl passed on him .
I might be in the minority , but I just see so many red flags

He has a long long way to go before he'd ever be considered a stud D. We'd be lucky if he ended up a top #2 at this point.

Of course we'll support him. He's a Habs and had nothing to do with being selected over better players. What this really does is put HuGo under the spotlight. This makes me extremely concerned about their decision making.

Haha, you don't know that, shit I bet you have never seen him play., If we use your logic, Michkov has a long way to go before he is ever considered a star if he ever becomes one.

The Drama!!

Well, you guys wanted an analytics department in Montreal, one that had influence. I think you have your answer tonight, judging by all the analytics geeks' charts tonight. He was the guy to be picked. Some even call him a 'cornerstone defenceman'.

We'll see. I will go back and look at his clips now. And eat chips. Because when I'm sad, I eat chips.

In the interview right after he was drafted he said that he has one more year of schooling he has to do.
