I think you are being somewhat pessimistic.

Slafkovsky at 19 is still a prospect and should slot into the top six with more seasoning.

Mailloux has real offensive-D talent.

Joshua Roy looks like he will be a solid second-liner. Trusted by his coaches everywhere he plays, upward of 20-25 goals per year is certainly envisionable in the future.

Jayden Struble has legs and muscle, and might be the next Romanov, with better IQ. Or maybe even McDonagh.

Heineman is big and fast, competes well, and is likely to be a middle six forward.

Farrell has a chance to be a real point producer, based on his intelligence and how he dominated the NCAA, plus looked good in international competitions. Sure, he might not hit his potential, but the upside is definitely there.

One of Dobes or Fowler might be a #1 goalie down the road.

Kidney racked up the points in Junior. Potential is there, but I see a smaller chance of hitting it than some of the others.

Engstrom and Kapanen may surprise people, especially Engstrom. Would love to see these guys in Laval by next season.
I think you are being somewhat pessimistic.

Consistant, if nothing else.

The evidence and historical precedent is what it is. How many 40pt forwards/30pt defenders have the Habs graduated in the last decade? How many 60pt forwards/40pt dmen? How many PPG forwards/50pt dmen?
You were assessing our current prospects, for example citing Hutson.

I did the same with a bunch more proipsects, and your reply regarding previous management teams is not on topic.

This was the direct quote from Arpon Basu and many others echoed this sentiment in the leadup to the draft. The Habs are very interested in "control" of their prospects because they believe their setup is really great at development.

Glad you agree it's okay to question management. Some middle ground we can meet at.

I saw that quote and I didn't interpret it as the team wanting full control. I think it was Arpon iirc that elaborated further on his podcast saying management didn't feel they would have any access during those three years, which they weren't enamored with considering there were parts of his game they wanted him to work on (this last part is my interpretation).

Are they right ? Meh. SKA has done fine developing great players, so I do think it would be nice to hear them elaborate on what specifically they think they'd do differently, but I'm not holding my breath on the media asking those questions. I'm going a bit off subject now, but just look at how that journalist talked about Slafkovsky's new training. He was regurgitating everything Bretenar was telling him. Nothing about whether the data or science actually backs any of this shit up. So we'll likely never get good answers to these types of questions.

As far as their belief in their development team goes, we'll see. People who think MSL and Nicholas are the cure to everything that ails the team are in for a reality check. The team clearly is going in a certain direction and that might bring success, but I also think they'll run into recurring problems. Like, culture and addiction didn't stop Corson and Chelios from being f***ing great players and cup winners. We're talking about a guy who made veiled death threats to Bettman through the media lol. So, how bad is a 17 year old disrespecting the Capitals and Coyotes?

Are they though, or have our prospects just sucked a lot?

Just look at Buffalo.

Actually stacked with prospects at all positions. They've had like one major bust (Nylander) and even though guys like O'reilly and Eichel have been traded, they. at worst, didn't get worse with Tuch and Thompson. Actually, Tage Thompson is the unicorn we hope Slafkovsky will be (but likely won't). They drafted in that 1st-2nd OA spot and even managed to get players that will fulfill their potential (or be traded for good players)... and they just last year almost made the playoffs.

It took a long time and they're likely to be better in the next five years. And we're supposed to compete with the roster and prospects we have against that ? lol.

The Buffalo Sabres have the longest active playoff series win drought at 16 seasons and also have the longest active post-season appearance drought at 12 seasons, a league record. You really want the Canadiens to emulate the Sabres?

That's not how professional sports works.

Imagine if Alcaraz's coaches said last year "Carlos needs to wait two years before playing at Wimbledon".

You don't make plans INTENTIONALLY to hold a player back. Instead you let him try and see when he is ready for the next step.

Maybe it will take David two years to get to the NHL, maybe one year, maybe three? Time will tell, let the process play out and don't put arbitrary numbers on it before it starts.

Do you seriously think I don't know how it works? A realistic timeline for a kid of his talent would be similar to Seider don't you think?
Did they intentionally incorporate a two year sliding ELC just for show or maybe it's an indication of how they view his learning curve.
This year as of right now our best option for Reinbacher is in Switzerland. Ignore our depth at the backend all you like but don't expect me to believe it won't factor in to where he ends up or when he finally comes up. I think bringing Reinbacher to Laval this year would be a mistake and the one faceted case you've presented certainly won't sway my belief. Mailloux and Reinbacher need to be utilized as top dog in all situations. I can only see one way both guys can get those precious reps.

BTW The Swiss league is no longer considered the weak sister by professionals more knowlegeable than either of us.

That shouldn’t be shocking the entire strategy is around Adam Nicholas executing the tactical nuts & bolts basic development details to allow MSL to be the hockey whisperer

Thats what the Dach trade was all about ditto Newhook, and even Gurianov was a late season dry run, to see if MSL sees any transformational potential… which he clearly didn’t

Habs clearly saw significant flaws in Michkov’s game they wouldn’t have access to correct in the short term

Before last season's training camp, most posters wanted Barron, Guhle and Xhekaj and some even Harris to all start in the AHL.

Why was that ok, but now only one top dog per year is allowed?

Imagine holding back Hutson an extra year so that reinbacher gets his exclusive top dog year in 24-25.

Does the same go for forwards? If we have two great centre prospects, must one must be sent to Europe or elsewhere so that Laval can focus on just one at a time?

By the way, the ELC slide feature does not in any way dictate where Reinbacher is going to play. Except for Mailloux, the Habs have been signing their recent 1st round picks asap almost every year unless they were commited to the NCAA. The difference is that in this case, signing him now is not an option, but required - because if he signs in a year from now, there will be no slide due to his late birthday.

Do I really need to point out the lack of depth before they came in? We had to pick up a dman on waivers. C'mon man.

I don’t think it would be the end of the world to have Rein in the AHL next year. I think we need to pump the brakes on Mailloux a bit too, you think he’s ready to be a number one D in the AHL already?

I think if Hughes wants to spread that being in control of our prospect's development is so crucial for him and his team then he must bring Reinbacher over to Laval. We are the masters of developing players apparently so if he lets him go back to Europe I won't know what to believe anymore.
Hes been contradicting himself left and right.

I hate Hughes so much, this whole "smarter" than everyone in the room aura he has makes the peoples elbow itch.

He should be a top pairing RD in Laval. I think I mentioned it a while back many people believe Mailloux would be further ahead had he played more hockey.
Now we can play him as much as possible. I don't see him as top pairing in Montreal but I do think top pairing experience in Laval would be hugely benefiicial.

Buffalo and Ottawa will be tough teams to compete with in our division in a few years

At this point, MTL have really strong future aswell. Maybe no Dahlin or Power at defensive group, but Habs are very well balanced, Guhle, Hutson, Reinbacher, Mailloux, Harris, Xhekaj, Engstrom... potentially to dominate for sure. At forward, if Slaf and Newhook reach their full potential, the forward group will be fun to watch aswell. I'm 100% confident with core of Habs. People underrated the talent of us young players!!

At any moment how many prospects turned out to become NHLers? Your view is not just rosy but over the top.

I'm not even worried like you guys are all worried but I've watched dog water teams for 20 years punch above weight , do you really think we can possibly not make the playoffs for 15 years like buffalo lmao I'll believe it when I see it , it's not gonna happen. Something in the water here keeps the mediocrity afloat we will be back in the mix soon enough.

As for competing and actually having an upper echelon team? That's a whole other story and I just don't see it with the talent we have now.

But bottoming out for 10 years is just not gonna happen , stupid win now moves for 8th place will happen LONG before Molson lets us miss the playoffs for a decade lol

Former agents haven’t been successful GMs in the NHLbut our city embraced Hughes because of the last GM’s tenure which was disaster and ruin.

I have very little faith in Hughes. This time the new GM needs to earn it.

At which point, will we reach a point where each thread aren't about management bashing and Michkov ? There is separate threads for that. I know people were invested in the 2023 draft and felt let down by some of the choices but it's difficult to have a hockey conversation about something else anywhere in the sub forum.

What do you really want to talk about? The great future outlook this team has? It doesnt. The great present? Lol.

The Best Pick in 7 Years was a Dman
It wouldn’t be though. Sergachev was a 3rd pair top PP guy, at best, for years. He raised that in the last half, last season. I am convinced he would not have had this much time in MTL. He would have been treated as a Patrice Brisebois type of player.

So, without the trade, I don’t think Sergachev is seen as a very good pick today.

You talked about potential, so did I.

Needless to say all prospects do not hit their potential, not because of past Montreal braintrusts, but simply because no team's prospects all hit their potential.

I expect that one of Reinbacher or Mailloux becomes a first-pairing defender.

I expect that one or two, not three of Farrell, Heineman, Roy, Mesar become top 9 players.

I think there is a less than 50% chance that one of Dobes or Fowler or Miller becomes a #1 goaltender.
