You cannot treat pro players the same way you do with college kids. I feel he is a bit stuck in his ways that worked in Boston. That's just the way it seems to me based on interviews and reactions during the game.
Everything worked just fine last year. Now, a few games in and he is not an NHL coach? He treats players they way that is needed for them. They, judging by last year, tend to respond. One cannot go out on the ice and do whatever he wants. There needs to be and is accountability. That is here now and is frankly refreshing after so many years without it.

What does that mean? Not allowing players to do whatever they want?

holy shit. you're like an upper management talking point bot the last couple days. in every thread.

the organized structure of man management in the NHL won't crumble if we sit Staal a night or throw Lias out with players other than Happy Gilmore every couple shifts.

Lots of hot takes here.
Here's an idea, let's petition to have one of our posters coach the team since they seem to have it figured out?

You clearly have not read anything of what I have been advocating for in either case. Wow. Read what I said regarding Staal in the Staal thread and what I said regarding Andersson in his thread. Or not and continue to espouse as you will. Sorry, but considering how I feel, those are fairly ignorant statements.

I guess I'd feel that way if this was an older squad.

But as of right now, the Rangers have 11 players who are the same age, or younger, than the current roster Boston University is fielding right now, and that number will increase if/when Chytil, Kravtsov, Lindgren, Shesterkin or several other players potentially make their season debuts.

Point being, a lot of this roster is college-aged kids.

College-aged isn't the same as college though.

Eh, I can't say I see that much of a difference when I look at this roster. I don't think this generation of our fan base has anything close to which we can compare this roster composition.

There are a lot of young players who play like young players, and in some cases, often behave like young players.

I feel the approach by the players is different and they should be treated differently. Sure, they fit in the same age-group but that's about it. College kids play one game a week, have a completely different schedule, outlook etc.

Maybe it's just my experience with rugby where there was a huge difference between college kids and players of the same age playing pro rugby

Eh, I can't say I have an overall beef with his approach. My biggest gripe is probably wanting to see Andersson more. But I don't have a particular problem with his approach to a lot of the other young players.

What I do see more often than not is too many veterans looking like passengers and not nearly enough drivers on this roster.

Lias on the 4th line makes no sense to me. And that has nothing to do with the fact that I am a fan of him. Everyone has said it lately. He deserved more based on pre-season and his performance early on.

Defensively we are a dumpster fire. Skjei has been poor, Staal has been Staal, Trouba has been great offensively but not good enough defensively to make up for the shortcomings on the other end.

The line-juggling up front is not a problem in itself, but the frequency with which the lines are changed, is. I understand why veterans are treated differently compared to younger players but I can't for the life of me find a valid reason why Kreider was moved up to the top line last week. It made 0 sense. Fast definitely deserves his shot though but everything else in the line up makes me wonder what Quinn is doing

And I feel like that kind of circles back to my passengers/drivers annoyance --- especially with names like Skjei and Kreider.

If the "people with a license" aren't driving, does it really matter who's in the driver's seat? No. But we will still see Staal out there for big minutes. Skjei and Kreider will get a pass. But Lemieux is benched and scratched after giving away a penalty

I think it's a bit more nuanced than that.

I think sometimes what we perceive as "reward" vs. "punishment" is really about trying to get a young player to get where he needs to be.

I'm not necessarily of the belief that the absence of a vet taking charge is automatically grounds for a younger player getting the nod. There's a risk/reward balance when it comes to younger players and being stricter with those players doesn't necessarily correlate with a seal of approval for vets. I think those things can exist independent of one another.

I've never much bought into the idea that giving kids more responsibilities means you run the risk of ruining them. Its not like we are electing a 2nd line center to serve for 4 years. If they dont run with the opportunity after a dozen games, try someone else. Same with someone eating up a bit of Staal's minutes. If Hajek is somehow as horrible as Staal is on the PK then put Staal back in. Or better yet see if Hajek grows into the responsibility. At least he has a chance to improve eventually.

Anyway if I had to guess, I've probably seen more kids ruined by getting insufficient ice time or opportunities than by crumbling under the pressures of playing middle 6 minutes.

Agreed. Lets face it, this stuff can change on a game to game basis.

My current issue isn't so much about the kids not getting the opportunity, but the clearly underperforming vets not getting stapled to the bench from time to time. It needs to be equitable.

Fire Lindy Ruff. Please God. Another year of awful defensive play. Awful in-zone coverage. Just terrible. Running around. Loose players free to roam as they please.

This is pathetic.

Get a real coach in here for the defense.

Also can we bench Staal and bring up Lindgren already. Enough is enough.
