Of course. It is completely logical to presume that Quinn loves Howden so much that he gives one set of rules for the entire team, including long term veterans and one set of rules just for Brett Howden. How crazy of me not to make the connection.

Eh there are always different sets of rules for different players. Different players get different amounts of leeway depending on a bunch of different things including experience, talent and past success. Every coach has his own formula in his head which is subject to his biases. After playing a horrific game Zibanejad might get a stern talking to, while a lesser player might get demoted, scratched or even waived.

It's Sports 101 but its also human nature.

Fair enough. I just find it hard to believe that Howden is such a player for Quinn.

No but Quinn probably sees Howden as more physically mature and more suited to the NHL game (he is big, strong, fast and smart and while he may not have top end skill he is pretty skilled) than some of his contemporaries and that gives him a longer leash and the first shot at bigger roles. The problem is the results haven't always been there. And if you are going to be a coach who demands accountability, you need to find a balance between rewarding hard work (and good practices, etc) and rewarding productive in-game play. It's not always an easy task.

I like how Quinn sounds in interviews. But I don't think he's a very bright coach. It shouldn't take a man nearly 100 games to figure out that you need to roll 4 lines in an NATIONAL HOCKEY LEAGUE game.

The quality of hockey is getting unwatchable.

Not like it matters, but he’s not a good coach. We’ll talk about him like Flyers fans spoke about Dave Hakstol before long.

He should be gone after next season once he’s done serving his purpose of instilling a work ethic in the players.

Yeah this isn't a depth issue anymore. It's a decision issue.
  • Team shows up unprepared to start games.
  • Every coach has favorites, but his are scrubs playing out position or shouldn't be in the league.
  • Dresses a shortened bench every game, then shortens it further. (This more than anything will help with the tank late in the season).
  • Has his team give up possession every zone entry- by design.
  • Runs a defensive system where the guy with the puck feels no pressure.
  • Only wants his guys to generate offense off of a cycle.
  • No designed breakouts to speak of 5v5.
So- who do we expect to be on the market come this off-season?

The whole Andersson vs Howden thing is really starting to remind me of the Pionk vs ADA gripes from the last two years. One guy seemingly gifted minutes while the other can do no right and fans complain of coaching bias. Yet somehow both players end up better for it in the long run. Almost as if this coach realizes different players need different treatment in order to grow.

Pionk ended up better in the long run? He basically collapsed half way through the season after being ok the first 15 games. Ada basically forced Quinns hand for more ice by his play.

If the coach isn't demanding that he do anything well, that's a larger problem.

It's like playing a .100 hitter because you like the way he swings.
Quinn said it last year. It is not the results that he is looking for as far a points go. If Howden is doing what the coaches are demanding, then points or no points, he is going to play.

Yeah, he "hustles" and "tries hard". Quinn said he likes his pace, whatever that means.

He's a less talented version of Ryan Callahan then.

I haven't seen anyone really show bad coaching for sure.

I've seen a few identify what MIGHT be bad coaching but is more likely just the lack of talent and experience of the roster.

It could be both. Quinn might be shielded a bit by the roster being so bad. I'm not ruling that out. I'm also not ruling out how full of overreactions and bias the posters are.

Certain things I don't worry about. Parade staals corpse out there for 25 mins if u want. He's clearly an "innings eater" so to speak.
He isn't in the long term plans, he just takes a lot of minutes to shield the kids from wearing out.

I saw pionk the same way and look what happened there. Traded away bc he wasn't in the long term plans. We got a great return. We likely keep pionk to play a similar role if trouba isn't available but the point is it always looked to me like the lineup and deployment was broken out of necessity and design.

Same thing this year.

So when people complain about staals ice time or howdens it just seems like missing the forest for the trees

With Howden it's more of a "holy crap we have 82 games to give other guys the opportunity. Calm the hell down." Type of deal

Can we be fair here? In 6 games Kakko has 1 goal, 8 shots, and a 43 CF% at 5v5. He hasn't had the puck or done much with it. He looked good on the PP yet. He has done very little to show that he should be moved up to the top line. The fact that he is not there is not some egregious error if you look at the history of 1/2 picks the vast majority of them are not there to start. Moving Kreider up over him is not surprising in the least. Fast is a bit weird but the line hasn't been good defensively and I assume the reason is to add a defensive presence to it.
