here's the thing with DQ for me.

I don't think there's anything he can do about our 2 biggest problems this year. Zibanejad becoming a corpse and the covid list/injuries/espionage derailing our roster playing full games together. No amount of strategy can do anything about that.

However, I don't want to sound crass but I literally don't give a f*** that this team is winning games, because it's on the back of the top 6. Cool. I already knew they were good. I didn't need this season to prove that to me. Lafreniere and Kakko are breaking my f***ing heart this year because not only are they not on the score sheet (honestly isn't entirely their fault), they're so borrrrrringgggggg. No electric moves or high end plays. They're just generic players. For the first few games re: Laf, that was really good to hear but it's gotten old. This is twice now that a consensus, universally agreed upon game breaking talent walked onto a roster where they had plenty of support and completely flopped. I'm tired of hearing that it's their games, or they were too hyped, or that they aren't good enough skaters. The entire f***ing hockey world didn't get it totally wrong twice in a row. And you know what? If there's even a chance that getting rid of DQ will ignite him I'd f***ing fire him, rehire him, then fire him again to do it. DQ is not nearly special enough to be exempt from the witchcraft we apparently need to pull off to have a top pick succeed. God it's so f***ing draining. And there are gripes with their games. Lafreniere is extremely lazy without the puck. Kakko seems to get triple teamed whenever he has it and no one can figure out why. Laf hasn't had chemistry with anyone on the roster and he's been tried with literally everyone. Find a f***ing answer for god's sake. This isn't botched defensive coverage or missing assignments. This is coachable. I'm not watching these players and coming away with the impression that they are talentless clowns.

Against what fans want, Quinn's job is to win games, in interest of the organization and self preservation. And because of that young players are not going to get opportunities that we all clamor for because the team has an entire top 6 that is better than all of them right now. He's not going to change the powerplay. He'll keep running the same f***ing overloaded RHS bullshit with no one in front until he gets fired cause that won games at some point and I guess two talents that basically need to succeed for this team to be worth a flying f*** developing at the expense of a POWERPLAY THAT ALREADY SUCKS just isn't f***ing worth it to him.

I don't thin this team would be a playoff contender without Quinn but to me making the playoffs didn't matter in the first place. You can go on and pretend that the two top picks are not extremely disappointing all you want and that our top 6 is carrying the water but if that continues we're no better than what we were when we weren't good enough. Christ.
Goddamn is this good.

I swear this board has zero patience with young forwards. Last night, Kakko sent a brilliant lob-pass to Gauthier for a clean breakaway, and Gauthier was able to move in on the goalie all alone as a result of that pass. He just didn't score.

Had he scored, we would all be OOooiing and Ahhing about Kakko's brilliant setup.

Sure, the lack of goal didn't get Kakko on the scoresheet, but it still doesn't negate the fact that he made a great playmaker's play. Chytil's pass to Gauthier, in comparison, did end up as a goal. So I guess people think Chytil is rolling and Kakko is not? Or are assists not important?

Have we not seen flashes of brilliance from both players this season? Laf's top corner shot and Kakko's dominant play at times?

There are plenty of signs that the potential is there. These guys are barely out of high school though. Not everyone is going to be Sid the Kid in their first year, and neither Kakko nor Laf was projected to be that type of generational talent.

With players at that age, it's going to be one step forward, two steps back sometimes. Just look at the mistakes that Miller made last night - those are rookie mistakes that very few seasoned NHL defensemen make.

You've got to keep things in perspective. As time goes on, these guys will come to understand their roles on the team more and more. And they will improve. And they may even become game-breaking talent someday.

Remember, nobody even DRAFTED Panarin because they didn't see anything special in him at that age. Like, everyone needs to chill and understand just how young these kids are. They all develop at different rates.

Part of Quinn's issue with young forwards is the over insistence on focusing on the the defensive side of the puck. This alone should let you know that he's a shit coach, good coaches will ALWAYS find a way to put a player in the best position to succeed rather than trying to mold them into their image of what they think they should be.

These are young players whose bread and butter are putting up points. They aren't going to further develop those traits by being overly defensively conscious and even less so when you don't put them in a prime position to put up points in situations where its easier to do so (PP time.) The lack of PP time excuse would have been valid had we had a top unit scorching the league like they did last year, they don't but again, Quinn wants to lean on the same group of veterans who have been woefully ineffective this year.

I'm not saying that defense isn't important, but that will come with time. You don't try to force a gradual process into one season especially if its hindering what guy these guys to the dance in the first place.

The lack of a system doesn't help either. He needs to go.

Don't give me this patience bullshit. I know what I'm watching. I know what the players are capable of. Stop pretending being unhappy with the results of two extremely highly touted young players are a lack of patience. They are both playing at historic lows. This is not normal.

Had he scored, we would all be OOooiing and Ahhing about Kakko's brilliant setup.

Uh, and? What does this have to do with anything?

You gonna harp on that (admittedly very good) pass the rest of this post?

Chytil has been much better and more noticeable than both Laf & Kakko on and off the scoresheet. Pay attention.

Have we not seen flashes of brilliance from both players this season? Laf's top corner shot and Kakko's dominant play at times?

I don't see them nearly often enough and what I see while I'm waiting for those flashes are very concerning. That's my whole problem.

There are plenty of signs that the potential is there. These guys are barely out of high school though. Not everyone is going to be Sid the Kid in their first year, and neither Kakko nor Laf was projected to be that type of generational talent.

Laf is on track to be the worst 1st overall D+1 season since Patrik Stefan. Kakko had a historically bad rookie year for a 2nd overall pick. This is nonsense and you are strawmanning my concerns.

I feel like this post was meant for someone else. Did I call them busts? Did I say that their future projections were clearly off? Quite the opposite! That they are uncharacterisically unlike their player profiled that has followed them their entire careers, and that it is more than fair to be concerned with how unimpressive they've looked back to back. If you want me to admit this is probably the worst they'll ever be at the NHL level and they have bright futures then fine, you got me. Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you.

If you're going to talk about Calgary, you need to go to the root of why they made a coaching change. Geoff Ward got fired because the players quit playing for him. That hasn't happened for Quinn yet.

I'm aware I tend to defend our coaches, and I was an AV fan for most of his tenure here, but I was also one of the first people on these boards in 2017-18 to recognize that the players had quit on AV and wanted him gone for that reason pretty quickly. Sometimes a coach's shelf life just expires. If I see that happening here, I will absolutely say so.

One of the even bigger concerns is these two are the latest in an ever growing line of players that just don't develop the right skills sets under Quinn. Laf and Kappo both deserve our patience and I agree that watching the games and expecting something better from young draft picks does not equal impatience. With Quinn, what remains totally obvious is he develops soft teams. Like incredibly soft. What's even more clear is the front office clearly sees this based off of their reaction to last season and their comments about "making the team tougher to play against." What's really clear about Laf and Kappo is they are developing "soft tendencies" under Quinn. Neither really forechecks well, neither works to get to the tough areas of the ice, both seem to lack grit, both seem to float around the ice, both seem to play passive games. Piece these two points together and I have no idea what management is waiting for. These guys are developing exactly the OPPOSITE of what the front office seems to realize they want. I'm not sure 20 plus games into Laf's career I can remember saying to myself " wow look at that grit--look at that toughness--look at that effort level." This is not what we want. I've said "look at his speed, look at his hands, look at his stick handling." Same for Kappo, he shows moments of grit but really not much.

Quinn's teams have been soft from the start. It's why they are very unlikable teams-- it's why they basically don't check anyone, it's why they are so incredibly easy to play against, it's why most other teams just bully them around and it's why they need to move away from this country club atmosphere. Imagine how these guys would develop under a tough, hard nosed coach running this team!

Raspewtin pretty much hit the nail on the head. He took the words out of many of our mouths. These two prospects were can’t miss talents. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that either of them would be putting numbers up elsewhere. This coach is a problem, a major problem, and I really don’t have the confidence in the front office to change it. Also, he’s going to live and die with his top-6. He doesn’t have time nor care about developing the two picks because he knows this could be it. 13 mins for each last night while Howden played 14:30. I know they took penalties but come on. Chytil 12 mins? He didn’t even have Chytil on PP2 for a stretch and the guy was flying! He’s so ****** overmatched it’s pathetic.

ngl, wether the points in question and Avery's answers are correct or not, I feel what Avery is talking about for Quinn, AV and Torts ... and I believe I wasn't "live" for the Renney times.

12 years of constriction.

as much as people don't like Avery, he is right. Lemmy should watch Avery videos on how to play and be effective. he has been awful this season. i bet if he wasn't a Lemieux he would be in the AHL or not so highly regarded. biggest disappointment for me is from him. thought he could have been a Sean Avery/Steve Ott type PK/3rd liner and good enough to play with top players. boy I was wrong.

Why do you think they would be putting up points elsewhere? Jack Hughes hasn't. Kirby Dach hasn't. Quinton Byfield isn't in the league. Tim Stutzle has (while being a disaster defensively). Of the 6 players taken 1-2-3 this year and last year none have exactly performed at a great level.

I have to be honest with you, that's one of the things I keep coming back to.

I get it, I want Kakko and Laf to explode for points right now. If for no other reason so we can focus on something else and just enjoy them as bright spots.

But the weird thing is that they really aren't alone either. Everyone understandably compares them to past players taken at similar spots. That makes sense.

But it's so interesting to see how many guys from the last couple of years are really just not lighting the world on fire. Even Stutzle, who you touched upon, has gotten 1/3 of his goals and points with the man advantage and is basically just doing open skate night out in Ottawa. Coming out of a pro league he has nearly twice as many giveaways as takeaways and (though I'm not a huge fan of the stat) is pacing at minus-40 over an 82 game schedule.

Maybe DQ isn't getting the most out of them offensively. That's a fair question. I think it has merit.

But you also start to wonder if we're seeing a bit of a shift in rookie production expectations as well. Because for as frustrating as this is right now, the Rangers aren't exactly alone either.

Its not just the points. Laf looked like an AHL 4th liner out there in OT last night. Kakko hasn't displayed a single flash of elite ability. Speed? no. Shot? No. Playmaking? no. Great he has a lot of takeaways. Hughes isn't lighting the world on fire by any means but he's at least showing some high end traits with his speed, aggression, and his puck control

That's not true at all. Like Mark Stone doesn't 'flash elite ability' either, not compared to Kyle Connor...

Not only this, you at least have the benefit of turning Kakko into a largely responsible 2 way player this year compared to last. So you're seeing some progression there.

It's pretty clear that the lack of training camp and unique circumstances of these recent times only makes it harder for a kid to break out. Imagine going through the pandemic at that age, let alone doing so and and trying to become a pro athlete in the process. Like, a bit of perspective here - I don't think today's youngsters have really been given a fair shake yet. In terms of actual games played, Kakko as just reached the length of a normal single season.

And I wouldn't want the point production to come at the expense of developing a genuine 2 way complete game for these kids. It's not time to hit the panic button.

If you want to get rid of Quinn - I'm fine with that, I'm not really defending him. But I'm also not really sure what a different coach would do better at this point.

I'm in a weird spot with Quinn.

I certainly don't love him; but I don't really hate him either.

He does some stuff that drives my guano loco, but I also think he avoids letting the kids just skate out there and get complete comfort with stuff I don't want them to. Like you, I don't have a problem changing coaches per se, but I do wonder if it has the result some hope for.

I think either way there's going to be a way to blast Quinn. If a new coach comes in next year, and everyone still sucks, it'll be because Quinn ruined them. If the new coach comes and there's improvement that builds off some Quinn stuff, he probably won't credit there either. And the truth in both scenarios is a bit of a mixed bag.

Kakko's possession numbers have been solid, and we're about a week out from commenting on some of his Jagr-esque moves. We're also a week out from Lafreniere's multi-game point streak. So there's good stuff in there.

Do I wish those elements were joined by both guys pacing at 20 goals and 50 points each?

Of course I do.

I also wish Zibanejad was producing at last year's pace as well, because I think it probably have us sitting in a playoff spot right now.

When push comes to shove, I don't feel worried so much as disappointed. I think this was one of the seasons that could go either way, depending on the bounces --- both on the ice and off. And it almost feels like every bounce has gone against us throughout the year.

Quantity has a quality of it's own. Kakko may not be a NHL level elite at any particular category, but if he is good at all of them he wil be a very good player. I don't find much fault with Kakko's play, to me he is one of the best Ranger forwards already. Yes, he needs to understand how to score goals in the NHL and get better at skating and shooting, gain confidence etc. but that is development.

What concerns me more is the team's lack of structure and identity, lack of system (or what is there is obsolete) and creativity. Punishment/reward instead of coaching. How are players like Kakko and Laf going to grow in this environment?

When Kakko won gold with the Finnish U20 team in 2019, the Finnish coach made a point of telling his team NOT to get sucked into playing US "back and forth" hockey but stick to playing the game their own way. On paper the US team was much more talented (Hughes, Zegras, Turcotte, Caufield, Farabee etc) but the Finns won because they played their system as a team.

I just don't see that kind of intelligence in Quinn's coaching. As I said in the Kakko thread, look at how Carolina are bringing Aho, Svechnikov, Necas etc along, guiding them into becoming stars in the NHL. A clear on ice system, tactics, training methods etc. Aho started on the wing then was nurtured into the C position. Brind'Amour knows exactly what it takes to be an effective NHL player night in and night out. In contrast the NYR are just a hot mess.

As an aside, the Habs fired Julien because he was doing a Quinn, not developing the talented youngsters enough (Kotkaniemi, Suzuki) and relying on his veterans too much. The Habs know the next decade of the franchises fortunes lie in how well they can develop and nurture KK & Suzuki, Romanov etc. KK already looks like a different player to some weeks ago.

He does not learn or adjust. How are players going to learn and/or adjust? The only player with consistent space/time is Panarin...

Quinn is like watching a NFL team run the wild cat.

Last week you were complaining about his system because it was all dump and chase. They scored their first three goals last night off the rush. The team fell behind 2-0, he switched the lines and they destroyed the Flyers in the second period. What do you even want, man???

Whatever happens is proof of what’s wrong with Quinn, even if it’s the opposite of what happened the game prior.

I don’t mind changing the coach, he’s just okay imo, but we’re fully at the point where people are single minded on him sucking and everything is his fault and a sign of his incompetence no matter what.
