FU ref for making me have to act like this
You F’ing happy I’m yelling. Gonna blow an artery

I love how his excessive displeasure with the refs is memeable. Multiple instances this season.

Although I wonder if this is the reason refs don't "respect him" and it's not because he's "new"
Word. I don’t think the fact he came up with something as visually what he did, is gonna go over well. Especially if fans like me run with it at games.

I think it’s one we’re better off enjoying for a minute and letting get forgotten about

It's both i'm sure. Last year he was very vocal about his displeasure of the refs, right out of the gate. Imagine if some new guy at work was telling you how much you suck at your job.

But what if I did suck at my job? And the new guy couldn't get me fired anyway. And the new guy might lose his job if my suckiness cost him sales (or whatever)

Well I highly doubt they THINK they suck. But that last part amounts to exactly what we are talking about only sales is pretty specific.

You gotta imagine JG or JD are telling their HC to calm his tits out there.

as a torts kind of guy, i'm going on record saying I love quinn calling the ref a fing jerkoff...who gives a crap if we lost the game, we are finishing bottom 10 anyway. I love coaches that defend their players...I wish our players showed even 25% of that passion

I’d rather have a coach who has a clue

Who gives a crap? I like the passion and have no love for the officials, but losing games to bias officiating is as fun as snorting glass. There isn't a more infuriating way to lose, and at the end of the day this is supposed to be entertainment. Being on their shit-list hasn't been a "one and done" affair in case you haven't noticed. It's practically every game these days. You want the kids to develop? Good luck if we are always on the PK. How many questionable hits on our guys go uncalled?

Besides, you can defend your players without going full nuclear, name calling, expletives and all. Be smart about it is all, ya know like EVERY SUCCESSFUL PRO COACH IN THE LEAGUE.

....well except Torts maybe.

im sorry but quinn lost his shit there. i mean he looks legit whacked and perhaps foaming at the mouth some. its funny until it isnt.

its good to defend your players when theres an injury and no call or something egregious happens, but he snapped over a minor penalty and looks like a complete nutcase.

you cant lose your shit like that. thats not how to gain respect of the refs.

as the leader of the team, im sure he regrets that behavior.

Torts deserves all he recognization in the world right now. You know how many people were expecting his name to get dropped and his head to roll with an abuse alllegation?

He didn’t. That means for as much as he acts crazy and pushes like a little Italian field general, that he’s a good guy down deep and either rode guys while treating them right respect, or that his old players have such much respect for him, they are deciding to let it slip.

Don’t be fooled. The hockey world was waiting and Torts gained a lot of admiration

Dude your one of the 5-10% of people who feel that way.

Do yourself never get around me. Bc Ill act like that completely for the effect if it’s warranted

F your norms (not you particularly, just in general)

It’s like a guy who acts all aggressive to you and thinks he’s gonna punk and keep taking shots at you or get closer bc your trying to maintain your cool and then at a sudden point, you roar like a mofo lion in the persons face, and call them a dumb F who doesn’t know who they are F’ing with and don’t stand a chance against and they don’t know it , with eyes that pierce their soul.

And they’re backing up, attempting to think of something clever to say back but realizing what they just get walked into, and basically tucking tail knowing i just barked up the wrong tree.

That’s what my dad taught me you do to people who try to bully you. Had a lot of family things happen to him early in life and developed stutter he eventually overcame, but at first his classmates used to torture him over that stuff. Until he decided to fight back and it stopped and he gained respect from his peers for the rest of his childhood days.

I was head and shoulders bigger than everyone in Grade school. I got a lot of unconscious resentment for that at first. On the first day of kindergarten, in the playground before even heading in, I had what became the ‘cool’ group of kids, (later one of them went on to be the HS QB who’s butt i covered), 4 kids just jump me and push me into a huge puddle of mud I went at all 4 of them. By the time it was over, I’m covered in mud and blood, and I notice my next door neighbor, basically what became my brother, jumped in to help me, and it’s the two of us breathing like animals ready for
more while the 4 other kids were basically laying in the mud, not beaten up, but beaten.

Those kids continued with their comments and passive-aggressive ways probably all the way until middle school. But they never stepped to me again in my life.

Sometimes you gotta let the world or someone knows there’s an animal inside you that will come out if it needs to.

Sorry this is still a rough wild world. It’s still Nature boys

This times 100. This is exactly the point I made a few pages back—not only is it disrespectful but it’s the kind of thing that is so far over the top it kills his credibility. Your point about him going ballistic over an additional 2 minutes penalty to a third pair defensemen is not lost on me either.

The idea that this world has legitimately brainwashed you into thinking you don’t have the right to go apeshit on someone who’s trying to threat you. Don’t have a right to break their bones or face for it. But if someone’s trying to threaten you or treat you Or someone else unjust, you have every right to make it clear to said person they better stop or they better get the F away from you

And if that means have to get demonstrative to make that point. It’s still better than fighting someone l, or Quinn throwing a bunch of sticks and pucks on the ice.

It’s the most natural/primal response in the world to threatening situations, yet society would like to bleed that out of you, WoNDER WHY FoLKS? Bc it makes it easier to take advantage of you if you don’t fight back

This happens in sports ALL the TIME. The more you go on. The more it’s obvious you come from a different sports culture and energy.

That’s fine. Quit acting like the people don’t agree with you are animals.

We’re just different from you. Like a lion and a cow are different

Yes this too. Torts can get away with these antics because he said accomplished a heck of a lot, has a proven track record of being a great guy behind the scenes( remember when he took in the kid with cancer or something like that and invited him into the locker room to read the starting lineup or something like that) continues to push his team’s hard and actually gets results. People who compare Quinn to Torts only see the surface level similarities but it’s inshlting to Torts to even put Quinn in the same conversation.

EDIT: The kid has Cerebral Palsy— my apologies.

I’ll agree with everything you said about torts and then say Torts has been a Head coach at the NHl level since 1999 or so? Quinn is in his 2nd year. Comparing Quinn to Torts can only be done on a surface level bc it’s insulting to try and compare where they are at as coaches

Who is this “we” you are referencing? Am I an “animal” because I disagree with people and point out the exact same things as these other guys do a few pages ago and now give them support here.

It is clear to me that I see the game differently than a lot of people but that does not mean “I know nothing.” As the guy who started this whole Quinn and the refs discussion I’d venture to say I’m pretty good at getting a good conversation going on here.

No I’m the animal. That’s not clear here?

I didn’t say you know nothing. I said you don’t know what your talking about regarding Quinn’s little moment with the rabbit ears ref. It’s a nothing moment save for the fact that Quinn added in the visualize image of putting his hands to his ears.

Again, go google Lou penellia. Guy was making points by going banshee for 40 decades and the guy is a Hall of Fame coach

If anyone on here knows coaching and ref interactions it’s me. Been a hockey ref for 22 years. But hey this is not about me— the visible ear thing is what got him the two. Any NHL ref will listen to a tirade but they won’t take getting visibly insulted( nor should they) Therefore it’s not “nothing.” Quinn showed the ref up and he got the penalty. It’s really a simple interaction.

I’m well aware of Lou’s antics but that is baseball where the calls made are black and white. Hockey is filled with so many grey area calls- not the same.

Well my good sir.

You just revealed why you feel the way you do. Your a ref. Obviously your gonna see it’s tgrough the Refs eyes. I see it through a fan’s eye, a coach’s eye, the players’ eyes.

So fundamentally we are not going to agree. I said my part on it. You said yours. You can continue with your points if you feel the need to. But ive made mine and we don’t need to go around in circles 5 times to get back to ‘fundamentally we are not going to agree’

Edit: but, I mean really you changed the goalposts with your last comment. Was it totally out of line and uncalled for like you’ve been saying the whole thread, or is it just a simple interaction which received the warranted 2min unsportsmanlike penalty and we moved on?

And to your last sentence, yeah that grey area is what allows these company men refs to manage the games for the leagues. Most of them seem like a bunch of shills. The legit refs and linesman’s should do everything in their power to make it clear they call the games within the spirit of the game and not micromanaging to achieve ‘parity’

Yeah totally fair- I do see the game partly from a refs standpoint and that’s why in inserted my take here. I felt it would add a perspective in that would generate some good conversation( and it sure has.). I have a lot of experience dealing with coaches and frankly I’m aware of how many coaches look at refs as the enemy. If Quinn thinks that way he better change that approach. It costs his team games( and has already.). You just can’t win an argument with the ref— they always win.

My point about it being a normal interaction is Quinn knew( or should have) that the public display would get him hit for the 2. It’s in the rule book. Showing up a ref and going insane and losing your mind over a call like that is something on the lines of a Peewee coach and I hold Quinn to a higher standard than that.

I’m happy to move on but I’d kindly ask that you keep the “don’t know what I’m talking about” phrases out of interactions with me or other posters. It’s obviously up to you but we can disagree without resorting to that level.

Is this norm?

Have many aliases do you have buddy?

Anyway, yes I will try from now on to simply say, ‘I don’t agree’ instead of ‘you don’t know what your talking about’.

And if I forget to do, anyone feel free to remind me to edit my post.

There you go, my HFboards New Years resolution.
Don’t try and help people by telling them when they are wrong, just say you disagree.

(The last part was a joke :))
