I'll be fine with another year and a half of Quinn, without Staal and another weights to pull us down. See what development he has as a coach.

Stop giving up the blue line so freely.

Support the puck better in the defensive zone so the D don't have to force bad passes and make turnovers.

The defensive structure in zone is far too passive, letting the opposition move the puck around at will while our guys hesitate and fail to take away time or space. I'm not sure what their plan is but there's a reason we're constantly getting stuck pinned in the zone. The players collapse and don't apply any pressure to the opposition. They should be more active in trying to take time and space away and try and force turnovers instead of being on their heels and letting the opposition dictate things with relatively little push back. It's really mind boggling.

Yup! That’s why I made the point I did about the ref incident. This is the NHL and the coach needs to see the bigger picture. Again though, Quinn thinks he’s got everything figured out after being a head coach in the league with a team that is quickly falling into oblivion with top end talent.
There's an arguement for either side of the ref thing and "the bigger picture."

I doubt he thinks he has everything figured out, and the team isn't falling anywhere – they haven't been a playoff team all year and they're still not. And they don't have top talent overall. They have two elite players and they have pretty terrible talent in a lot of positions.

Hey @True Blue —- that silent majority I’ve been referencing—- yeah go ahead and read these past 2 pages. They are here!!!!
Your silent majority seems to amount to about 10 people. I would not break my shoulder patting myself on it, were I you.

Team is exactly where I thought they'd be in the standings to be honest. Like to the number. I'm not necessarily a fan of Quinn but I am skeptical that this team would be significantly better with a coaching change (or that there's a rush to change to begin with).
They are about performing to expectations or even somewhat exceeding them standings-wise. Post TDL, you can expect them to fall in the standings.

Like you, given how the roster is constituted, I would doubt that any other coach could have done better.

I will say that the team coming out in games not prepared to play is all coaching and something that needs to be fixed.

Please keep posting! This is the kind of in game analysis that is just so lacking on this board. You absolutely nailed a number of critical mistakes. I made a similar post several pages back that highlighted many of the same fundamental issues with the structure being established. Thanks for a great post!

My pleasure.

I believe we call this the eye test.

I would hope not. There are a number of really bad structural set ups. Quinn acknowledges that the team has a poor defensive structure, but doesn't do anything to fix it.

You line up your D, lefty-righty for a reason. You don't want your Dmen making plays off their back hand in the D-Zone, and it's easier to keep the puck along the boards.

But they have their D switch with their man in the D-Zone. What ends up happening is that you often get the left D (usually Skjei, and you see it more often with Lindgren), playing their off side, with the man being Defended by the right D goes net front or back of the net to spread the D out.

This vacates the slot and if a D pinches... you get a odd-man scenario where the last man back has to defend two passing options, and this leaves a guy open.

The other thing this does is forces the LD to play puck on his back hand to get it out of the zone. It's harder to pass it, harder to lift it... watch and see this with Skjei repeatedly turning it over and the Rangers being caught with guys flying out the zone and the D both caught with the slot open.

To my eyes, I see teams crossing their wings over to make this happen when they carry the puck in.... because they know that the Rangers D will switch with their man, and not switch off their man.

Seeing this over and over again.... makes me think we have idiots running the team.
It's funny you bring that up... I noticed this yesterday for the first time.. It's the first time I've noticed them playing man. I watch when I can, some nights its not applicable but I've never noticed them playing man like I did yesterday.

It's as if they're changing schemes on a game to game basis.... which would explain a lot of confusion

--------------

The PP is just as bad as our defensive structure. Standing still and passing it around the perimeter... what are they expecting to happen? They had Panarin on the RW goal-line on the 5 on 3....

more people are now giving Quinn a C or below than above that...

What if Ruff is incapable of implementing a different system? What is Quinn to do then? Gorton forced that idiot on him from day 1.

If Quinn can't go into the front office and ask for a new assistant than I'm sorry that's a toxic situation and supports my earlier assortment that Quinn was hired because he would just be happy to have the job and not fight back with management.

I need Ruff to be ousted before I can fully lay the blame on DQ for the disaster that is the defensive structure. DQ has his flaws but I cannot assess him properly with Ruff here. I think its easier said than done to expect him to march into Gorton’s Office and demand the firing of a longtime coach in this league. I want it to happen but lets not act like this is a simple task

Even a C does not represent your silent majority. Why don't you go ahead and make another poll there, tiger? Better yet, you should do one a week. Or wait, come up with something else that is his fault. Add Iran to the list.

Darn it all I know I am right. And the more and more I heap on, I know that more will come around to my point. I just know it. And THEN, I will be VINDICATED. Victory shall be mine! Now where is that silent majority? I know it was around here somewhere. Where could I have put it?

You seam a little angry buddy- it’s Friday, relax!

I’m enjoying this conversation and the different perspectives that are coming out. That’s all- no need for a poll and I’m not a well enough established poster to do that. Probably is time for a new one at the mid way point though.

Totally agree- it’s time for Lindy to go but his ineptitude can’t just be forgiven and used as a defense for why Quinn is not doing his job.

You bring up a really interesting question, what type of relationship does Quinn have with Gorton?

The funny part of this whole "Ruff needs to go" thing is that JG the clown only kept Ruff around to babysit DQ.

Does anyone know what telling a ref he has Rabbit Ears suggests ?

I guess Quinn got in trouble for this insult in the Edmonton game

Rangers’ coach Quinn gets penalized for for saying ref has “f***ing rabbit ears”!

Im not familiar with that ding

It means the ref is too concerned with what the bench is saying about him and letting it impact his calls on the ice. I guess Quinn felt that the Ref was reacting to what the Oilers were complaining about calls and that’s why he banged the Rangers for 4.

I want Quinn to pull a Lou Pinella and start kicking ice at the refs. I have no issues with him yelling at them for ridiculous calls.
Look it's a young team and we have a chance at the playoffs, with Marc Staal playing, so I can't see why he needs to get axed like some people want. Next year if things don't improve then I think we have reason to be upset.

I don't care if he yells at the refs, or if he challenges other coaches to fight, or if he never talks to the players about how they should improve, or screams at them and throws garbage cans after every bad period.

I care that his personnel decisions are logical and that the team performs better than the sum of its parts. We aren't there yet, but I'm willing to give him a long leash until this time next year; then we'll see.

Do you really want to make the playoffs only to get bounced in the first 4 games?

This team couldn't currently be in a worse possible position.

They're in the dreaded middle and are going to end up with a real shittty pick in the draft and judging by the lack of movement, JG is still tanking it.

Another failed experiment..

JD needs to step in and clean house..

It seems to me that Quinn thinks run and gun is our best chance to win games. Otherwise I don't know why we would be playing like this. I've always gotten the feel that while he's supposed to be the "developmental" kind of coach he wants to win at expense of losing to learn how to win.

It's kind of a catch 22 as we no doubt lack talent and depth. At the same time we have some legit top players and I think Quinn is trying to play to their strengths, which exposes the youth and the lack of talent to big time mistakes. When Torts was the coach the majority of us, myself included, were complaining that he wasn't opening it up for Nash or Gaborik.

To me, Quinn hasn't changed much from what we saw from AV. Although, that's the way the game is played today. Scores are up the most since I was a kid and Selanne and Bure were scoring at video game rates. At the same time you can't keep this run and gun up when you're bleeding shots and scoring chances like this. Especially with a young team.

I see us lately transitioning back to man on man defense. That was the main flaw with AV. It's hard to play. A young team shouldn't be trying to play like that, especially when we give up 40 shots a game. As many have said before, we need to be closing gaps, staying in lanes, pressuring guys, basically learning how to play simple and shutdown defense. Good teams do that before they try and run and gun teams.

This kind of turned into a rant but for Quinn to stick around he needs to see that this isn't working. Torts saw it after a few games of "safe is death". Great coaches always work with what they have, not what they want.
