Canning the coach of an untalented roster after 1-2 seasons is bush league Edmonton crap IMO, regardless of what you think of him.
This is the most talented roster in quite some time. I dont know why I keep reading this. Not singling you out but it keeps getting repeated.

We lack experience not talent. That's where the coaching is suppose to help with teaching structure and discipline. However, our 4th line is bad and lacks talent.

This team just plays like a bunch of dumbasses way too often. Like seriously, they play like morons who don't know what they're supposed to do. It's reminiscent of the end of AV where there was no apparent system.

I'm of course willing to see how the full season plays out, but if it's more of this, let him go.

The end of the AV era...who was here for that time too?....

Two legit head coaches were run out of town for not winning enough playoff games but this unproven nobody is gonna get a long leash because people just like him for whatever reason.

That’s how you know Torts was a great coach. He really squeezed every drop out of a largely mediocre roster and helped develop some key pieces. His style was unattractive, sure, but I maintain that we overperformed under him. That guy knows structure and discipline better than most. He is the boss.

I would hope not. There are a number of really bad structural set ups. Quinn acknowledges that the team has a poor defensive structure, but doesn't do anything to fix it.

You line up your D, lefty-righty for a reason. You don't want your Dmen making plays off their back hand in the D-Zone, and it's easier to keep the puck along the boards.

But they have their D switch with their man in the D-Zone. What ends up happening is that you often get the left D (usually Skjei, and you see it more often with Lindgren), playing their off side, with the man being Defended by the right D goes net front or back of the net to spread the D out.

This vacates the slot and if a D pinches... you get a odd-man scenario where the last man back has to defend two passing options, and this leaves a guy open.

The other thing this does is forces the LD to play puck on his back hand to get it out of the zone. It's harder to pass it, harder to lift it... watch and see this with Skjei repeatedly turning it over and the Rangers being caught with guys flying out the zone and the D both caught with the slot open.

To my eyes, I see teams crossing their wings over to make this happen when they carry the puck in.... because they know that the Rangers D will switch with their man, and not switch off their man.

Seeing this over and over again.... makes me think we have idiots running the team.

I was on board with the Quinn hiring and thought he did a good job last season.

However, in hindsight, hiring a coach with no NHL experience for a team that's so young and has seen a lot of turnover in the past year may have been too much to ask of him. And Lindy Ruff with his shoddy defensive structure may not be the best person to serve as the veteran presence on the coaching staff.

I also wonder how much of the defensive woes we've had in recent years is a result of organizational philosophy. When Torts was fired, Sather said he wanted to get away from coaches that were too defense-oriented, and that he would rather win games 5-4 than 2-1. It seems like the organization has overcorrected and focusing on defense is almost an afterthought.

Honestly, I’ve begun to hate Quinn. I don’t care what penalty Kakko took, there’s no reason to have McKegg out with 2 minutes left down a goal and why did Lundqvist stay in net for an extra full minute of solid zone possession? I just think he’s a clueless NHL coach whose selective with his accountability gig.

Major team issues which seem coaching related:
  1. defensive system yields too many shots game in game out
  2. constantly taking too many penalties
  3. horrible face off percentages (maybe work shop it?)
  4. over passing (yielded a goal against tonight)
  5. consistent puck watching on trailing players aka the second wave - we let up so many goals in this manner
  6. -partially disputable- team is easily bullied by run and gun teams
  7. questionable line management
none of these seem talent/roster related

I'm not sure the roster is as untalented as Quinn makes it look. Yes its a transition year, but they shouldnt look this bad.

I don't think a single NYR fan on this board expected a cup this year. We were expecting to lose. Like that tic-tac-toe goal Calgary scored is an ok goal to let up for it was pure talent. But every game you see the same giveaways, the same penalties and mistakes. They should be improving these errors.

The young players have to be put in a position to get better - to learn good habits and it doesn't seem like our coach is interested in the most important thing we need for the rebuild.

Yeah I drop my Quinn grade to a D now.

I gave David a D when this came out.

There's plenty of good coaches out there now. Start going after them. DeBoer does better with veterans, but at one time he was an excellent junior coach. One of the best. He would be my top choice.

David's level of incompetence is not acceptable.

I want to be fair and patient, as it's a long process to go from ripping it down to being contender, but I have serious qualms about the team not being ready to play, lack of structure, questionable lineup decisions, and a seemingly randomized accountability method. I'm not sure if Quinn is the wrong guy for the job yet, but I find myself less and less convinced he's the right guy as each game passes by.

I don't like DeBoer either.

Wait until Nashville axes Laviolette (Who is really Torts+) and jump on that or let Quinn and friends ride things out for another season and promote Knoblauch and staff.

I don't think I've seen many games where I thought the roster is untalented, and I think that's why I have begun to sour on Quinn. They are 10th in goals per game for so they have enough talent to score goals and be competitive. The issue is lack of any kind of structure. Given the offensive production and the goalie tandem they have, they probably should be better than this.

There's no riding out another season with David and crew. They need to make a change. The one good thing about the coaching carousel in NY is two years seems to be the window for a guy whose headed out.

Knoblauch's doing a fine job in HFD, but unless he's an exceptional talent, I would like to go with an experienced culture builder. Laviolette would be a great option as well.
