I think the reason we always fight about coaches is that you have people who look at how many games the team is winning and you have people with certain other expectations.
I've said it before: this roster finishing 5th in this division isn't a bad result at all. And yes, wins are obviously important. But I think there's more to analyzing a team's overall outlook, especially from a team building standpoint, which is what we're all doing here.
It's been said that this team needs more of a direction or a clear identity. I agree with
@Edge when he says that's a work in progress, but my honest assessment is that we got further from that in 20-21. I feel we got more disengagement from the vets, more questions about what the roster is moving forward, looked worse in some of those unfavorable matchups, and had fewer moments where we looked organized as opposed to last year.
Also, last year we got better as we went along and I feel we got worse the second half this year. Again, the wins and losses might not reflect that, but I think we went from a good team that just wasn't finishing to a team that was feasting on Buffalo, NJ, and Philly (which is fine) but looked worse against the quality sides. You could attribute least year's second half to Zibanejad but Zibanejad got hot on the scoreboard both years.
Quinn's dismissal is not an inherent suggestion that a better coach finishes higher than 5th. But maybe Kakko scores more, maybe Zibanejad is less of a zombie, maybe we a score a goal or two in tight games, or maybe we have more boxes checked off on the 2023 fantasy roster. All hypotheticals but this is what the front office will wonder about.
Judging a coach by W-L is as dangerous as doing it with a goalie or a pitcher.
I'm not expecting our next coach to put us in next year's playoffs. I'm expecting our next coach to start building towards an identity, bring fresh standards of what's expected (because Quinn let vets get away with murder), and maybe give Lafreniere a look on the powerplay when LH half-wall is a gaping hole, instead of applying this umbrella "kids=tough shit" mentality.
