How are you defining "contender"? I think the season after next this team could be expected to make it past round one, but a Cup would be something of a cinderella run. The year after that, with the experience of a playoff run under their belts, I might expect something more. To me a contender is a team that is expected to be in that final four group of teams. I have nothing to back this up, but my sense is that most teams make a run and miss before they really start making runs as a contender. I suppose it's all just an issue of semantics, though.

I fully expect them in the playoffs next season.

The Quinn detractors were angry they weren't in this season. If they're not in next season, what's the point of changing the coach?

I guess I envision them one season ahead of where you have them.

I'll give Quinn this: he genuinely seems like a nice guy and (sorry David) had the right intentions. He just sucks at managing people at this level because he never worked with NHL veterans and had a hard time going up against NHL coaches.

I have more respect for that than AV who has trouble managing people because he's a conceited shitbag who thinks he invented hockey, and struggles against other coaches because he'll never adjust God's perfect system.
If it’s one think you can’t take away from Balloon Boy, it’s intentions per 60.

Earlier, you said Quinn didn't hold the Rangers back.

Now, you're saying the exact opposite.

I do not mind paying the right coach big money.
I think the bigger issue is that if the 'Canes continue doing so well then why would they let him go and why would he leave and the Rangers can't even start to offer him huge amounts of $$ until the 'Canes win or are out, and they may miss some good candidates while waiting and get stuck with, I dunno, Torts

The odds are slim that he wants to leave and the Rangers might handicap themselves waiting for him

Go big get it right.

I have them in the playoffs next season, winning a round and maybe being competitive in round two the season after that, and then being a legit contender. I'll be surprised if a team this young doesn't get its teeth kicked in in round one the first time out. Shesty is great, but I don't think he has the Lundqvistian ability to drag a team through multiple playoff rounds on his own. I think as fans, we've gotten so used to him doing that, that we sometimes forget how tough it is to win a single round of playoff hockey.

Also, only some Quinn detractors had the playoffs as the line of demarcation. My whole issue was that Quinn seemed to be prioritizing team success over development and ended up with neither. Even then, while I think this is best for the team moving forward, you won't ever see me celebrating someone losing their job. I think Quinn can be a good NHL coach--I just think now was way too soon for him to be one. He needs to figure out how to stand up to his veteran players if he wants to actually be in charge.

His contract is up at the end of the year
And it’s been widly reported that he has his extension agreed upon, 3x1.8.

What’s left he getting his staff retained and paid, which will be done. He’s taking less to make that happen. He’s staying in Carolina.

4.5 might change his mind.

Although I enjoyed Quinn Brind'Amour is twice the coach.

Nice man, things looked like they were clicking in late December 2019 but post COVID it just didn’t mesh. Not all on him, but everyone else got the axe so there was no point in keeping him around.

I find the calls for Sullivan to be hired if he’s somehow fired interesting, seeing how he was the biggest HF whipping boy when our PP was rancid. It was not the coaches fault, clear as day personnel problem but that didn’t stop everyone from piling on.

good luck to Quinn in his next stop, I’m sure he’ll do fine back where he was.

Circus = Best prospect pool in league, youngest team, with a Hart finalist, Norris finalist and a #2 overall, #1 overall pick consecutively, a team 90% of pundits said "were on the precipice of being REALLY good for a REALLY LONG TIME.

Got it.

So since I said the last two years since jd got here that means lucking into the first and 2nd overall pick has nothing to do with what was done prior. You’re not giving them credit for making picks you could make in your sleep are you?

and both kids horribly underperformed as rookies so that’s hardly a glowing endorsement

you’re also giving them credit for Adam Fox literally forcing his way here.

but somehow just ignored the total shit show of drama that has followed the team since last year. That’s almost hard to do but you did it.
