Paying him 12m would be a disaster. So ice a team with more ELC's ? Do you like Foligno's contract?

Mike Reilly will be the least of the roster problems when you pay ANY player a max contract. Just can't do it in a cap league
Fully disagree. Wasting 3m here and there (this includes Folignos contract pretty obviously) and having no cheap youth handcuffs the team more than having a 50 goal scorer making 2m more than people feel good about paying

Giving Pastrnak $13m AAV x 8 would make him the highest paid player in the NHL. Is Pastrnak the best player in the league?

Matthews is up after next season. He would top 13M easily. So it wouldn’t be long.

The point is that the cap is going up and Pasta at 11-12-13M wont be bad. I’d rather overpay a superstar by a couple million than overpaying bottom roster talent.

Is the extra million really matter? Give the man 13M. He deserves it.
I think it’s tough to pay him twice as much as Brad Marchand. I mean it would not sit great w me if I were him.

People are being insane based on a stray comment or two. Come on guys.
I agree but the clock is ticking. Pasta would apparently have all the info from his agent after this weekend. I would expect a day this week, if not oh well, maybe it will happen in the summer.

Well c'mon Lou. Marchand signed his current contract back in 2016. Sure he took a discount at the time but it's not like he JUST signed his contract last year or something.

Marchand signed before his breakout, not a fair standard to apply

Marchand signed that contract 6 years ago after a 37 goal 61 point season.

Pasta has 38 goals and 72 points at the all Star break

This is irrelevant. It’s not Pastrnak’s fault that Marchand is older than him and signed his deal when he did.

If this is what stops Sweeney from overpaying mid-bottom of the roster players, i am fine with it.

Providence and cheap vet depth is exactly what this is for.

Stop paying Smiths, Folignos, and Reillys a premium and cap hits to the star players don't hurt as much.

We've been fortunate to be competitive despite some bad contracts because we've had stars on a discount. We are likely running out of the luxury soon, so need to play smart with the cap.

I agree with the second part of your post.

McKinnon probably signed his last big payday contract, but Matthews and McDavid will be setting the new standard when the time comes. The thing is, these three are the top 3 centers in the league.

It's not to say Pastrnak doesn't deserve it, but I think it's tough to justify that percentage of the cap going to a winger, especially in the position the Bruins are in.

McDavid signed his contract 4 years ago, your logic is flawed.
You're right, they should give Pastrnak $15m instead, Pastrnak is happy, and we will be happy too.

I'm going to head out in a bit, head to the car dealership near me, and purchase a car they hiked up close to 2x the price of the MSRP and buy it.

Let's not play down Pastrnak as "a winger". He's legitimately in the conversation of being the best goal scorer in the NHL. You quite literally won't be able to find a replacement for him because there's like 3 or 4 player in the league who can do what he does and nobody is dumb enough to give them away. That's why you pay him and then try not to overpay your bottom-6.

People seem to love painting Pastrnak as some mercenary that is going to hold the team over a barrel. They did it for his last contract too. I think it’s quite possible that he just wants to stay focused on his game and let his agent(the actual mercenaries)do the talking until the seasons over.

If we go by his history and what we know about him there’s zero reason to think Pasta isn’t going to re-sign with the team with an at least fair for both sides contract. I think it’s actually pretty disrespectful to the man to say otherwise and am just hoping some you guys and gals just like being dramatic.

IMO, Pasta is a Bruin for life. He signs a few weeks or days before FA at 10.5x8.

When’s the last time that happened with the Bruins? Certainly no smear campaign with Krug (which turned out to be a very smart move not to sign him).

Sweeney isn't just negotiating this deal, he's negotiating all of them now.

Say he gives Pasta 12-13M. Ok fine.

Next he's gotta work on deals for Bergeron, Krejci, Foligno, Freddy, Swayman, UFA's. Then a year after Gryz and so on. Everyone else has to sacrifice so that Pasta could get 12M? Nobody is going to be as interested. So some leave, and the ones that stay get way more money than the previous mindset. You want to play on a winning team Pasta? Give the team some flexibility to ice a winner.

That overall dynamic is a big problem to risk over one deal.

What's the winning culture/locker room joy/Bruins brotherhood worth, in dollars? In the real world people are taking less money to work from home. Or less money to work 4 days a week. Speaking for myself, my happiness is worth a fortune to me. I literally always take the better situation over the more profitable one.

So you arrive at this situation. Nobody wants Pasta to walk. Nobody wants to trade him, not really. But there's a lot at risk if you cave quickly to 12M+ (which is why they haven't). The Matthew Tkachuk scenario must definitely be on Sweeney's mind as a viable one.

Good post except for the 10.5 mil. I have it at 11.5-12 mil

I'll never understand the difference. Sorry, just can't. $11M? $12M?
Will his lifestyle change if instead of getting a paycheck for $425,000 (every other week) he holds out for say $500,000? If you are content where you are that is not very significant. So if he moves it must be for other reasons.
Would Jacobs' lifestyle change if they charged $50 to park for a game instead of $58?
