SUNRISE, Fla. — After strolling up to his designated interview station in a white suit covered in watercolor blue brushstrokes, David Pastrnak was ready to hear it.
“Shoot,” he said, smiling.
It took two questions before someone mentioned his contract.
The Bruins All-Star right winger, whose six-year, $40 million deal expires after this season, knew that talk was coming. He parried the first attempt, in which someone asked in a roundabout way if he might consider the Bruins’ much-heralded locker-room chemistry when deciding his future.

Before that scene, when asked directly how he felt that his contract situation was still unresolved, Pastrnak said it didn’t matter.

“You know, obviously, I feel fine,” he said. “There’s no rush. In the middle of the season, you’re focusing on hockey and everything. You don’t really think about the contract situation. It’s in the hands of your agent and management and [Bruins general manager] Donnie (Sweeney). I’m just thinking about hockey and playing, honestly. That’s pretty much all I’ve been doing.”

On an episode of his “32 Thought” podcast released Friday morning, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said the Bruins and Pastrnak’s agent, J.P. Barry, are “moving towards getting (a deal) done,” and that the Bruins have “bent to Pastrnak.”

“I think we’ll find out that when this one is over, we will find out that David Pastrnak pushed the Boston Bruins in a position they didn’t think they would get to and didn’t want to be in,” Friedman said on the podcast. “What’s the biggest weapon you have in a negotiation? The willingness to say no.

“I think David Pastrnak had a willingness to say, ‘Look, if you guys aren’t willing to do this, it’s going to be a problem.’ I think he pushed the Bruins into an area that maybe they didn’t want to go, and I think it’s going to get done because they recognized it has to get done. That’s my opinion.”

Friedman also mentioned that Boston will not trade Pastrnak. “That’s crazy talk,” he said.

Asked during his Friday media scrum if the negotiation was nearing the finish line, Pastrnak deferred.

“J.P. and Donnie talk every day,” he said. “I actually haven’t talked to J.P. for a while because of the tough schedule we had. Gonna give him a call. And I think he’s here, so we’re going to meet up.

“You know, we’ll see. There’s not much time to think. I was just playing and grinding and now finding a little bit of relax time.”

I am getting sick of these negotiations and thankfully Marchand is as well

I’m Pastrnak agent JP Barry I take Marchand’s comments directed at me

Pastrnak can’t be on video saying to Ty Anderson ‘it’s not about money - I don’t play for money….yada yada’ and his guy in a hard cap is going for every penny

Be more like Isaiah Thomas when with Celtics he said ‘they need to back the brinks truck up’

Enough of this shit

Who works for who here- I’m the player I call my agent and tell him I want this done in 24 hours- enough dicking around

Also, he gets $12 M I’m on team I’m a little irked. I wouldn’t say it but hockey only real sport with a hard cap and Marchand correct you give a large chunk to someone else - you will suffer other areas

No GM in any sport is even close to perfect - so the Mike Reilly stuff is pure dumb ass conmenrary

Last year I heard the experts tell me Ullmark was a waste of 5 M a year

Pastrnak gets anything over 11.5 M owe I’ll be that guy who is disappointed in him

Baseball Football basketball go get $35 M a year

Hockey you get $12 M you end up Toronto

Your teammates take less so you can go 50-10

Pastrnak can ask for a trillion and some will give it here

Not me

This is both fascinating but annoying as shit

I never understood when people spell like this - what’s it actually mean in all seriousness

I thought you take all the capital numbers and spells out something but the few times I’ve seen people do it, it didn’t

My caps lock broke. Had to buy a new keyboard.

Hell baby
I’d rather overpay pasta by $2 mill a year and go with a league min contract on the bottom defense pair to make up for it vs losing Pasta

If he wants $12 give him $12. Hopefully he comes in at $10 or something

Maybe that’s how they fit Horvat or Larkin into the lineup next year.
Let Pasta walk.
It'll be tight cap-wise but they could fit both.

If he doesn't want to stay, hopefully he agrees to a sign and trade for that extra year similarly to Tkachuk, but he doesn't owe the Bruins anything to do that.

Tkachuk was an RFA though.

You're right, it would probably be more akin to the Lindholm deal, assurance the player will sign with the receiving team.
I read an article w Lindholm and he said the Bruins were interested in him earlier in the season so when he came to Boston and checked things out. It shows you the gms must tell these UFA trade candidates what’s happening all year. He said it was a whirlwind but was familiar with them.

I like David, always have.

*Still* needs to play a 200 ft. game. He made another careless play the other nght that led to a goal.

Honestly don't understand why, at this late stage, he hasn't learned to be much more defensively responsible. 90% of his NHL career -- career -- he's been skating with Patrice and Brad, two of the most defensively accountable players to ever play the game.

After all this time, I still don't get it.

Again, I like David and what he brings per talent, execution, and attitude. He nonetheless needs to be a more complete, three zone player.

Go ahead and pay him.

Like what number would the Bruins not want to do? Remember the “we are going to attack this aggressively” on July 13th?
Hertl got to him- so obvious

Pastrnak could dress like he’s Don Johnson in Miami Vice every day in sunny San Jose - which I believe is the number one show in Czechia - that or CSI Prague.

Meier likely traded next 22 days and Pastrnak is the replacement plan

Vlasic Courure and Leblanc coming off soon and they can pay Pastrnak 7/100 or flip the Bruins a pick for his rights and go 8 years

He’s gone Lou

Eichel wants out - Stone after 2 back surgeries will be LTIR and traded to Toronto or Tampa - Vegas will be rebuilding they won’t want Eichel even if Cassidy somehow survives

Eichel should be back up plan

Everyday this resembles a combo of the Betts/Bogearts contract issues

I’m going on record $100 M from San Jose
