Luongo got Burke fired.

Burke was all in - willing to trade 1sts/top prospects to get him - to win now.

BOG stepped in and said enough is enough - had to fire him immediately to prevent the continued destruciton of franchise.

I thought maybe it was because Burke didn't want to pay for Luongo and the board was adamant that he do so. And Burke staying true to his principles declined it and was fired for doing so.

LOL Nonis: Have you seen my twinkie?

Change for the sake of change. As someone who was really liking the direction Burke was taking, I'm at least pleased that Nonis is taking over. But Nonis just admitted that he thinks hockey along very similar lines as Burke does, that's something a lot of people have known from the time he got hired on as Assistant GM. If Burke wasn't doing what MLSE wanted the GM of the Leafs to be doing, what does switching to Burke Jr. do but cause a media whirlwind?

It's strange, because I have faith in Nonis like I had faith in Burke, so it's hard to be fully angry since we still have a figurehead that I think I'll be able to get behind. But a lot of us have been able to see the vision that Burke had starting to unfold since he first took over here, and to make this kind of move at this time seems mind-boggling. It seems almost hilarious watching this presser and having Tom say that it was Burke's direction, etc. (as well, of course, as results in the standings) that got him canned, and then listening to Nonis talk about how similarly he thinks the game to Burke.

Hopefully this goes over well...

I would hold the same faith you do if this didn't reek of Corporate interference at it's finest. If Luongo ends up in a Leaf jersey for too big of a package, I'll know for sure that this is ownership pulling the strings. Shouldn't take too long to see those results.

Kypreos says no matter what Anselmi says or what you heard, this has a lot to do with Luongo. They are still in the hunt for him.

Makes more sense than firing him for his "style" as he has been like that since day 1 and then knew what they were getting when they hired him.

I hope that Nonis has the spunk and aggressiveness of Burke, but will also be more modern so that he will allow players to pick their own numbers (even high ones) without stupid arguments, not have an Xmas break, and not have those stupid rules about contracts. If you're good we want you long term, cmon.

Time to get my popcorn ready, we are definitely the center of the hockey universe baby!

Bottomline, the new ownership wants a yes man and this is so dangerous. You need a GM with autonomy, not a bunch of suits that you have to run everything past. Dark days ahead my friends!!!

This is the darkest day since Fletcher's interim appointment. Hopefully this works out better.

To me the only thing important was that he confirmed that Brian Burke was fired and anything beyond that is really insignificant.

He had me at "Fired"..

Hints of corporate interference on hockey matters are there, you can ignore them if you like but it doesn't make them go away.

I think your bias against Burke is preventing you from thinking clearly, and has for a long time now.

It really isn't imo. Especially with a new ownership group that I've been scared of since day 1.

Yeah, having autonomy sure worked out for Burke.

Seems in general that ownership really didn't like Burke's style. They simply did not like him or his personality and there wasn't trust. Nonis stated he wants to continue their path and will not start over

Burke has been in the job long enough. He had his chance, and by every metric he failed.

Companies like Rogers and Bell are successful because they set goals, and they expect their people to achieve good results. Burke hasn't had good results in any of his years on top.

Good to see the Leafs finally setting expectations for their people.

Yeah its entirely possible - but he used the Keyword "Patience" on multiple occasions during presser. Trading for Luongo is not being patient. Especially at that asking price.

Nonis: "I am more patient than Brian was"

Seems pretty evident to me after listening.

Yeah this is what I got out of Nonis' statements. Seems like he wants to bring more youth into the organization. Luongo seems to be the opposite of this plan.
