Burke was entering the last stages of his current contract and with is lack of success to date, and mounting pressure now, but in a lame duck GM position to succeed, might have caused valid concern at MLSE that he would make moves to saves his own job at the expense of what ids best for the franchise going forward.

This situation can be very dangerous and harmful to the organization, so they nipped it in the bud prior to the trade season opening and more potential damaging moves were coming down the pipeline in short order.

Timing is perfect by MLSE if that was a valid concern of the board of directors to protect the assets of the organization.

If anyone was going to make a BAD DEAL for Luongo it was BURKE not Nonis who said he builds patiently.

fired officially just before the cba is ratified
sweet

Burke must really hate NHL lockouts ..

Last lockout in 2004-05 he was let go by Vancouver saying "thanks but no thanks, and now this lockout he was once again let go before hockey officially resumed again.

Every lockout Burke finds himself unemployed and coincidentally every time he is replaced by Dave Nonis..

Burke has no eye for talent in the crease. Nonis does. If he gets Luongo, he will put a piece in place that has been missing since the days of Cujo. I'm sure Leafs fans look back on those years more fondly than the last 8 seasons.
Burke was right to pass on him. He's an aging goalie who will fall apart further on a weak team.

Damien Cox ‏@DamoSpin

Only in freakin' Toronto would idiots say 3 1/2 years is time enough to build a good team from scratch.

Four drafts, four free agency periods (though, one slightly shortened), four trade-deadlines, zero improvement in the standings.

Wrong,Belfour was great for the Leafs

More in the sporting world, sure, I don't work in sports. I'll also go on a limb and say I have accomplished more in the business world than you, however, that is just as irrelevant.

I don't dismiss everything he says, I think he knows baseball really well. I also think he is a *******, and I do not respect him or anything he says regarding the Leafs.

I am not upset, I also do not accept what he says, I think it is asinine.

Tell me which hanger your company parks their jets in and we can discuss it.:)

Heading off to the gym to take my mind of this. I hate this organization so much sometimes. Emotional roller-coaster is an understatement.

On what basis is Nonis a puppet?

He has been involved with building this team since Burke started and was given the majority of the credit for the Phaneuf deal and others.

Its been reported that many teams have inquired about hiring Nonis but Burke refused to let Nonis out of his contract.

This is just another typical over reaction.

MLSE didn't like Burke, and its hard to argue why they should. He missed the playoffs, made many stupid comments in the media, and generally used his position as his own person soapbox.

That said, Burke did make great contributions in the community and his loyalty to the players and staff is admirable.

Exactly after all that the team is still not a Stanley Cup contender in any way shape or form. Was all that going to change in 1 more year of Burke lol come on!

Totally agree. I think Cox misses the point - no one said he had to have a GOOD team after 3 1/2 years, but he had to have one that showed progress, and that didn't have gaping question marks in key positions like goal and #1 centre.

Stick it, Damien. Pretty high and mighty of you to chastise Toronto fans for being impatient when you've ripped on management plenty of times in the last few years.

I love how some corporate ruthlessness is now in play. In the business world when you spout off your mouth about how good you will build a company and in 4 years have zero results to show for it you get canned. Sports are a results business and Burke's big mouth only did more harm then good so they are perfectly justified in kicking him out. I expect Nonis to be gone at the end of the year and a professional Corporate mangement team brought in to rebuild the "organization" from the ground up rather then just saying so.
