Yes they are. They know that Nonis has a fire under his nutsuck to get Lu now. They know that they can get more now.

Or maybe this was about Burke's style.. They can't get more when because of Burke they've made Luongo's contract that bad. If he retires, the Canucks and Leafs will both have to pay. If we pay more for Luo, then MLSE is a joke.

Yeah but I've been reading hockeyfanz' posts for a little while now and he's basically right on the money when it comes to the Leafs as a team and their GM.

He has credibility.

Not to disparage anyone, but no one here has "credibility" we're all just a bunch of fans that express our opinions.

Many teams that get lottery picks are not "aiming" for it. Sometimes they're just poor management misjudging their talent...like here for example.

that is why getting a #1 goalie helps the cause of making the playoffs and pushes us towards the cup...

All past tense.
You haven't said anything to dispute hockeyfanz's claim that Burke is a nobody NOW from the leafs viewpoint. Instead you went on about a generic rant that could be said about every poster on Hfboards. By far one of the worst posts i've seen here.

As of him being dismissed, the organization was still in partnerships with a number of foundations and groups in Toronto... He WAS doing it until he got fired.

It really depends on what Leaf fans you're talking about. Pretty sure you aren't going to get a consensus on this being a great move by the organization, so.....

I am more pissed that it sounds like Bell and Rogers want more say in hockey operations than Burke getting fired. Nothing worse than a bunch of non-hockey people thinking they know more than our GM.

Isn't this what Burke has been doing ? i'm astounished at the people who are in love with this guy, did we win a cup with him at the helm or what ?

A Gm's role is help build his franchise no matter what, Burke seem to be the guy who respects the game/league/CBA before thinking about his team. Offer those damn 10 years contacts, i don't have a problem with that i we can get good to great players. After 5 years bieng the GM, we have TYLER FREAKING BOZAK as our 1st line center

Free wallet. Another good thing we`ll shake the tea U S A thing.

If we overpay for Luongo, I can't thank Burke enough to stand by his decision and not make the deal.

Sadly..if it does happen, there is absolutely nothing we can do.

Yep, it's a sickening feeling. It appears we are about to make an awful move that will hurt the organization badly.

No. That isn't what he was doing. Go through a list of his trades as a Leaf GM. Aside from the Kessel trade (which still netted a very good player), he generally completely trounced the other GM. Gardiner, Lupul, Phaneuf, Colborne I can keep going, but those all come to mind immediately. Only Colborne required an asset, the rest were garbage out, talent in.

It's true our forwards are still weak, but when he came in, our best forward by a country mile was Antropov, and there was a STEEP decline after that.

Brutal timing.

And if he fell on his sword over Luongo, he definitely has my sympathies. I wonder who thought this was a good idea just at this particular moment.

So shocked...But why wait this long? Couldn't they have done this during the lockout?

Does this really change much in terms of direction and identity of the team? Nonis has the same philosophy (although more patient) and Burke is staying as senior adviser where he will most likely have inputs but not the final say.

WITCH WAS one OF the HIGHEST SCORING lines IN THE NHL!!

You've finished in the bottom 10 year year he's been here.
We've been a lottery team 3/4
We traded away our lottery picks 2/3 seasons
We have The worst PK in NHL over the last 4 years
We have the Worst accumulated GAA's over the last 4 years.

And that is what you hang your hat on ...

God I won't miss the Burke love affair that 75% of you had.

Just now sitting down and digesting it all now

So Rogers/Bell don't like Burke and his style and want a more corporate suit to run the hockey team who is a corporate puppet.

If this is the case as it has reported then I am wishing for the Ballard era back.

If Rogers or Bell is more worried about corporate brand than having a quality NHL Gm then I am worried more now than in the Ballard era.

What people forget about Burke is yeah he was a big mouth but when the Leafs are having a bad streak he took the onus off the players and put it on him so the player could play and not have the negative Toronto media hounding them daily.

I am not defending the Burke era here they had no playoff games but this was a decision done by a board who did not get along with a quality hockey person who basically just created the new CBA with all his ideas being put in.

So now when does ownership stop interfering in the Leafs? If they don't like Kessel do they tell Nonis to trade him?

Rogers and Bell is the worse thing that happened to the Leafs cause all they are concerned with is imagine and content for their media platforms.

OH and for you jays people who say look at the Jays and where they are now its all Rogers that is total BS.

IF the Marlins did not have a crappy owner who was willing to sell his team for prospects the Jays would have gone into the season with bascially the same team and what would people be saying about Rogers now.

They got lucky cause of an owner.....and don't forget the season has not started yet so we don't even know if this team will compete.

Anyways at least with Nonis there is continuity.

What is going to be funny is in the next couple of years when the Leafs make the playoffs it will be Brian Burke's handprints all over it.

I think Burke's my-way-or-the-highway style just wasn't going to mesh with the new suits that represent ownership of the team. Burke's style works better with an entrepreneur owner like Samueli in Anaheim who owns the thing for fun and needs a hockey guy to run it and says "Whatever you think Brian" when it comes to tough decisions. No way the new suits would sit around the boardroom and deal with Burke's gruff style. Nonis is far more palatable to them.

I am perfectly okay with this. Every leaf fan was aware after Brian Burke it was going to be Nonis; plus at times during Burkes tenure he always credited Nonis for doing a trade(Lupul/Gard)/pushing hard for a guy(Mac). I think the timing is just a shocker but it makes a little sense. New CBA give the guy that has been studying under Burke a chance. It is not like Nonis is a rookie GM he has done it before. Also it is not like we lost he is still involved in the Leaf organization.

I am baffled but at the same time excited.

yea point out all the cons only! not a bias argument..

I don't believe, as constituted now, the team around luo would be a cup contender. It's got nothing to do with luo more to do with our core of players. I personally don't think they are the type of team to make a playoff run. And I don't think they will be anytime soon. Is the new draft lottery system for this year only.

cup contender?
