Mack needs to do what he feels is right for him and his family, but man, Tom Brady being relatively underpaid throughout his career is a major reason he’s got 7 rings.

Tom Brady also makes more in endorsements than MacKinnon could dream of. One source I saw claimed Brady has made $180 million from endorsement revenue in his career ... MacKinnon won't even make that much from hockey even if he plays until he's 50.

If he makes more than 12.5 then he better be happy with the money as the Avs won't be winning anymore Cups with that salary structure.

He can bridge it and take 2x9m to see how much the salary cap increases before signing the final big contract.

I think we’ll see a match to McDavid for 12.5 x 8 for MacKinnon.

Worked out for the Hawks......

I mean yeah it did. They have 3 Cups don't they? Did those Cups magically disapear? Every championship team will have a down cycle after winning a few Cups anyway, Crosby took less money, has it helped Pittsburgh win more Cups the last 3-4 years?

No, the contract was signed AFTER the 3 cups.

They won exactly NOTHING after they handed out those achievement contracts. So, no, it didn't work out for them at all. You want your team to be where the Hawks are right now?

Why bring up Crosby signing for less money when the topic is Mackinnon demanding to be the highest paid player in the league? How is that relevant? That is the opposite of what is happening.

For 2-3 Cups? I'm pretty sure there are at least 20 GMs that would jump right now and kiss their own naked ass to have 2-3 Cups guaranteed in the next 4-6 years, even if it meant eventually the team would sputter out and have to rebuild from ground zero like where the Hawks look like they are headed.

Scratch that, actually I think virtually every GM would take that.

There are plenty of teams headed to a rebuild like Chicago is with dick all to show for it.

Again, those cups were won BEFORE THE CONTRACT WAS SIGNED. How are you not understanding that?

They won NOTHING after the contract was signed, missed the playoffs most years.

If that's the price of Cups, then so be it. Being loyal to people who bring you a Cup is part and parcel of winning the Cup.

You're not going to win every year, in fact if you can win 2/12 years with a core group ... you are in the upper echelon of the NHL.

This ain't the NBA, there is no Michael Jordan here that's going to win you 6/6 championships. If in the NHL you can win even 2 in a span of 15-20 years, that's a tremendous success.

The Avs haven't won "cups" with Mackinnon, they won one.

Again, you are completely failing to grasp that the Hawks won the cups BEFORE the contracts were signed. I bolded that word in the hope that you will understand it better.

AFTER those massive contracts were signed, the Hawks won nothing and toiled in mediocrity due to a cap crunch. If you are OK with that for your team, then fine.

So my point stands. It did not work out for the Hawks. Stop trying to straw man.

Pittsburgh opens a bunch of cap next year. 😆Seroiusly though, I get the injury concerns but if a player wants to maximize their earning potential I’d sign a 1-2 year and wait for the cap to spike before signing the legacy contract.

So what's the alternative ... treat your stars like shit and pay them below market value?

You win a Cup and your player values go through the roof.

Tough shit.

If you don't like it, go try being Vancouver (zero Cups ever in 40+ years) instead and see how that feels.

lmao you literally brought up Crosby signing for less and how it led to more cups. THAT IS THE ALTERNATIVE.

What are you even trying to argue anymore?

I wouldn’t say that. The players deserve everything they can get. Good luck building some sort of dynasty though. I can see it both ways.

8.7 million was still among the top paid players in the league circa 2015/2016, they were fortunate that Toronto was willing to gift them a 3rd superstar by eating a bunch of salary and made hay with it.

Crosby is now in today's cap fairly underpaid, but it really hasn't meant much for Pittsburgh winning anything the last several years.

Not only that but the Crosby analogy doesn't really work 1:1 when you factor in Crosby probably makes another 5-6 million/year in endorsement money.

So he's not taking less out of the goodness of his heart, he takes less because he can afford to take less, he makes as much as MacKinnon does outside of hockey as MacKinnon does total.

No it wasn't, and the Kane and Toews contracts prove that. Stop making things up.

All you are doing is proving my original point, which is the Hawks won nothing after max paying their guys for past success, go to bed kid.

Brady is married to a supermodel who earns way more than he does and secondly, the Patriots have employed the services of his "body coach" Alejandro Guerrero.

In what? Tim Hortons commercials with MacKinnon?

Pretty sure Crosby was one of the 5 highest paid players going into 2014-15. I think he may have even be in the top 2 or 3. Ovy had a 9.5 cap hit that's the only one that was higher.

EDIT: I think Malkin's 9.5 extension was also in place, so Crosby was 3rd highest paid by cap hit, 2nd highest paid in actual salary, but the highest paid hockey player period when factoring in endorsements.
