Bullshit. Obviously he's going to want to get paid, but "seeking to be the NHL's highest paid player"? Lol

If MacKinnon cares more about money than the big picture, then I'll throw my hands up in the air and admit I didn't have any clue about the guy.
Wanting to be the highest paid player in the league when being one of the top players in the league says nothing about "this guy"

He's earned every penny and him making 6 mil while being worth 12 is part of the teams success in the first place.

You have to pay the man. He's an elite 1C who's a HHOF lock barring the obvious caveats.

However, giving him 13, 14 million isn't exactly an easy pill to swallow (though I'm sure Avs fans will gladly take the Cup in exchange for a pricey deal).

I mean he just won the cup. I don't see any issue with him wanting to get paid especially since he was like 4mil underpaid per year on his last contract.

But he'll be turning 30 at some point so that will automatically make him overpaid
-smooth brained HF posters
I mean Mack's contract is gonna suck ass at some point, that's a a near guarantee. But I it would be asinine to not re sign him.

This isn’t rocket science…aside from headlining it into Twitter hits - it makes all the sense in the world. The simple fact of the matter is of the very small handful of top players in the league, MacKinnon is the next one due an extension. That’s all it comes down to.

His reign as top paid player will probably last one season until Matthews gets a similar if not greater deal in the summer of 2024.

There’s nothing even remotely sensational about MacK being the highest paid player come next season…

that seems unfair. Is it just because he's coming of that sweetheart deal that he seems the type to just always leave 4 million AAV off the table.

Cap inflation means that it should be common for there to always be a new highest paid player. MacKinnon should be the highest paid player in the league after his deal. Then, perhaps McDavid will be the newest highest paid player when his deal is up, or whoever else.

Barkov went from also being significantly underpaid from $5.9 mil to $10 mil. Mack is worth a bit more than Barkov (even though I do believe Barkov will age better), but that’s the jump most Avs fans expect - $6.3 mil to 10.5-11 mil which would be a discount.

If Mack wants to get paid $12+ mil he’s earned that right and he’ll get that, but that goes completely against him talking about taking a discount.

It works like this on HF:

- prior to their draft, they're too young to accurately assess
- the moment they're drafted, they're total shit because they're not proven yet, but the fans of the team that drafted the prospect think he's the greatest player of all time
- once they're young and established in the NHL, the clock is ticking on the years of team control so they're not worth as much in a trade as a 14-year old that can do fancy hockey tricks on social media
- once they're on their 2nd contract they're going to eventually be a UFA so they suck
- once they're on their 3rd contract they're old as shit so they doubly suck
- if they're 35+ they should honestly be dead and buried because they don't deserve to play over a prospect that can't even cut it in the AHL
This is basic hfboardomics

Yeah I would be surprised based on some interviews I've seen but I wouldn't say that should change anyones opinion on him.

- MacKinnon: Summer ‘23
- Matthews: Summer ‘24
- Draisatil: Summer ‘25
- McDavid: Summer ‘26

Very, very possible the bar is gonna get raised four consecutive years coming up. Especially as we start to emerge from the flat cap period.

Again, none of this is earth-shattering news.

Edit: Heck Makar is back up to the plate in Summer ‘27…could be five straight years.

People who aren’t aware should realize that Dater had his press credentials revoked after this. So what are the odds Dater is getting information from the Avs or MacKinnon’s agent? The Avs are one of the most tight-lipped teams in the NHL. What benefit comes to the Avs or MacKinnon by having Dater report this?

Conversely, Dater runs his own web site which benefits from clicks.

And what are the odds a guy like this gets a “scoop” on both MacKinnon and Kadri? The Islanders (if you’re to believe reports from more “reputable” insiders) are also very tight lipped.

It's not about what he's earned. It's about what he's talked about repeatedly in any podcast or interview over the years. He's made it very clear what's important to him.

I said what I said because he doesn't seem like the type of guy who does the exact opposite of what he says.

If the cup changed things, then so be it. But more likely this is Dater looking for clicks.

To be fair. He is quoting brooks re kadri.

Guess him taking a discount is right out the window in order to be a contender.

But it isn't going to happen. He should be happy to get $10-12M AAV.
