To be fair, a 8x13M deal actually would still be a sizable discount. I think people struggle to understand just how much value the best players in the league provide.

This past season, guys like Matthews and Makar provided over $20M of value to their respective teams. Mackinnon's value this year was about $17M.

That being said, it would effectively end the Avs chances as a top tier cup contender after this season. There's simply no way we'd be able to keep the quality of the roster we have while paying Mackinnon $13M.

It would make sense that he wants a ton, because otherwise a deal would have already been signed.

Unfortunate for COL but they got a Cup
I don't think it would end their cup chances either. Of course they have one more year at a bargain on Mack, but also look at Tampa. They had to start shelling out cash and just did it. It meant having to lose some great depth players, and rebuilding their legendary 3rd line, but they succeeded.

So, Incoming 8 years X 9-10 mil on a team friendly deal to help the Avs be as good as they can.

I mean. He is clearly below Matthews x and Mcdavid.

But the next best ufa should get the most.
Keeping in mind he has to account for the cap jump in 3 years. It makes sense.

“If” he were to take 13. The cap would be worth it in 3 and a bargain at 5-8 dependent on decline

The article is Dater speculating with zero facts.

So, neither. It's a clickbait.
I mean if Mack was willing to take a very friendly team friendly deal you think it'd be done by now. I don't think that means he NEEDS to be the highest paid player in the league, but I don't think he's as hell bent on taking a team friendly deal as he previously said. Which is fine.

MacKinnon is going to end up the highest payed player in hockey so I don't know why anyone is doubting this. McDavid signed his contract years ago as a RFA. MacKinnon is a UFA that has been criminally underpaid for a long time. Just like Toews and Kane got record setting contracts after helping the Hawks win cups, MacKinnon is going to do that as well.

Players say shit all of the time about how money doesn't matter and stuff like that. Evgeni Malkin said that he was a rich guy and didn't care about money at the end of season press conference, then he almost walked in free agency because the Penguins weren't offering him enough money. A huge majority of hockey players are just like everyone else, they're looking to maximize their career earnings when they have the chance.

The man is going to get PAID, be it by the Avs or (God forbid) someone else.

Said it before & I’ll say it again, the $6m that EJ is making and comes off the books next year is just going to be added to the $6.3m MacK has been making. He won’t be the league’s highest paid but close at $12.3m

Pay the man. When you have playoff no shows like Huberdeau getting 10.5 and playoff virgin Eichel getting 10.5, MacKinnon should be 12 or more easy. He got his Cup, mission accomplished on the most pressing need, now he needs to look after himself, this is the last big contract he's going to get and he hasn't been paid according to his worth for many years now.

13 on an 82.5 cap vs 13 on a 100 million cap is a very different thing.

Depending on what happens next year and more importantly the year after... we could legitimately be seeing the top tier players getting 15+ within 2 seasons on a 100 million dollar cap.

Not saying 13 is a "discount", but if he does sign for that it won't be completely unreasonable and not necessarily the contender crippler it is being marketed as by the time the Avs actually need cap dollars to pay the second wave of talent coming due in a few years -- Toews, Byram, ect.

That said, the lower you set the franchise bar --- the better. If Mac signs at anything less than 11.5 it is a true discount. 10.5 or less and it is a downright sweetheart deal.

Mac will be the internal salary limit for an Avs player until Makar comes due again. So the lower that bar goes, the better.

Fully expect in the 12ish range and within 2 seasons people will be saying it was a "good" deal when guys like Mathews are signing for 14-15.
