I mean if Mack was willing to take a very friendly team friendly deal you think it'd be done by now. I don't think that means he NEEDS to be the highest paid player in the league, but I don't think he's as hell bent on taking a team friendly deal as he previously said. Which is fine.
Why does it all have to be extremes like either very team friendly or seeking to be the highest paid player in the world anyway? I'm automatically assuming they're working on a middle-ground until I see the final number, no matter what anybody says, writes or what I'm secretly hoping for.

Kopitar and Toews won multiple stanley cups, they could basically write down the number themselves, and they signed for 14-15% of the salary cap. McDavid is the highest paid player at 12.5M, and considered the best player in the world. Matthews makes the 2nd most at 11.6M as the league's best goalscoring center. There's a pretty clear number in there that makes a lot of sense for MacK right now.

But I don't see why it has to be rushed if both parties basically know he's going to be in Colorado for life. There can be a lot of discussion points left. Maybe Mac's camp wants to wait and see where the cap is going. On the opposite side, If MacK is really hardcore he could even want to see how the Avs plan to spend their money next summer before making his decision on a paycut. And what is a paycut, when people like Point sign for 9.5M that can lead to different opinions. Anyway, I don't sweat it. I trust they'll get it done and both parties want it to make sense.

I got annoyed by Daters obvious tactic to make it sound like MacKinnon has made it his goal to be highest paid player in the world, when in reality he's never said that. Clearly it worked as people here took it as a fact.

I do not believe this will happen. He's good buddies with Sid and I believe that "taking a discount to help the team" will rub off on him.

Nice payday for a cup, but I doubt he gets the most tbh. Probably wants to win a few more.

Mackinnon seems to be the best bargain in the league, but the original deal was paid above the market rate. Peers from the same 2013 draft year, Mack ($6.3M) was the 2nd highest (Monahan $6.375M was the highest). At the time, it seemed to be an overpay as salaries were close based on potential. Monahan deservingly at the time had the better career start until injuries slowed his progress.

Nonetheless, Mack improved after Duchene was traded too being among the best players in the league. Salary projection? If history repeats, Mack likely accepts McDavid is the best player and $12.5M as the ceiling. Matthews (overpaid) earns $11.6M. It'll fall within this range.

Guess the salary will be $12M per @ 8 seasons.

Crosby made a lot more money earlier in his career, when he signed his first deal off his ELC it was the highest in the league I believe and he was one of the highest paid players for a long time, MacKinnon is no where even close to a top 20 paid player ever.

Outside of Tim Horton's (where he probably gets paid a good deal less than Crosby too), MacKinnon has no where near the endorsement deals Crosby gets either.

MacKinnon has done everything you hoped for the team. Now it's his turn and he's earned it.

I’m not too sure about this. As a Kings fan you should definitely consider two things. 1. How is he going to perform? 2) are we giving him the money because he plays to that dollar amount or are we giving him that money because he “deserves it”. I feel like you make the most mistakes when you sign someone to a contract because they deserve the dollar amount. If he was underpaid that is his problem and I don’t see why the avalanche need to go to highway through cap hell kings style.

Crosby probably makes more in a year off endorsements than MacKinnon makes total salary from everything he does (hockey + off-ice stuff).

That's not really a great comparison, Crosby has a lot of marketing deals being the face of the league for such a long time.

I don't think it has to be either extreme. I just think if he was willing to sign for something in the Barkov range than it'd be done already. I mean his clear market value is I'd say ~11AAV.

My biggest worry is that everyone in CO has taken market value when signing here so I don't really think Mack will be the only one to take a pay cut personally.

Not hard to imagine he's going to get all of Erik Johnson's cap money, when he's gone after next season, plus whatever is left over in the pot. So that could be 13-14M easy.

It works like this on HF:

- prior to their draft, they're too young to accurately assess
- the moment they're drafted, they're total shit because they're not proven yet, but the fans of the team that drafted the prospect think he's the greatest player of all time
- once they're young and established in the NHL, the clock is ticking on the years of team control so they're not worth as much in a trade as a 14-year old that can do fancy hockey tricks on social media
- once they're on their 2nd contract they're going to eventually be a UFA so they suck
- once they're on their 3rd contract they're old as shit so they doubly suck
- if they're 35+ they should honestly be dead and buried because they don't deserve to play over a prospect that can't even cut it in the AHL
You forgot that all picks are more valuable than established NHL players, even though there are a statistics about the likelihood that a pick makes the NHL, let alone makes an impact.

The deal will be $100+ M over 8 years. Anything below that is a discount. The guy delivered a Cup while playing on one of the most sweetheart deals of the salary cap era.

“Paiy thet mahn hees mah-nee.”

Mack needs to do what he feels is right for him and his family, but man, Tom Brady being relatively underpaid throughout his career is a major reason he’s got 7 rings.
