MacKinnon has obviously been massive underpaid for a while now. He signed the contract to win I think. Now everyone is getting paid. I’d like to see the Av’s keep the band together, not max contracts and dominate the league for a couple years.

He signed a completely fair valued contract at the time. It wasn't viewed as a "steal" or "overpaid". Crazy how people forget this cause one time when he became really good he said he would take less to win. High profile young players were getting 6x6 type contracts at that time (Tavares, Hall, Segiun, RNH etc) he was just following the trend. Kinda like how a lot of young C's today are getting 8x8 (Hughes, Norris, Thomas). I'm willing to bet Hughes' deal will look like a complete steal in no time. But go back when Hughes signed his deal and I bet you will find people saying its an overpayment.

This is really the first chance Mackinnon has to put his money where his mouth is regarding his "I'll take less to win" comment years ago.

Hasn't he done this for his entire career so far?
He's signed one contract in his career that was viewed as a fair contract when it was signed? No one was saying he took a massive pay cut when he signed that deal, not even mackinnon himself.

For those of you that don’t follow the Avs, Dater is as legitimate as Eklund. He’s a guy that struggles with alcohol abuse and some sexual harassment claims issues that got him fired off the Avs beat with the local paper.

Clearly he has fragile ego issues as well. He was fired by the Denver post for cause. He cited manic depression issues. Lets just say he’s not an insider and he sure does chase clicks.

How true is this comment? I mean.. did he say "i want to be the best paid player in the league"?

I don't believe a thing Dater says.

BUT Nate deserves it. He's been so f***ing good for so long while underpaid the entire time. And unlike McDavid, MacKinnon was actually successful in leading his team to a cup and will be paid on his track record.

Sucks for the Avs a bit. Their defense will pay the price for this after this upcoming season. I think one of Girard or Toews (expiring contract) is gonzo next summer. But they'll still have

Byram - Makar
Toews/Girard - Manson

So they're not suffering too greatly on the back end.

Why would he not seek the most money. He deserves it and gave the team 6 years at a huge discount. It paid off for both sides.

I like the concept of elite players taking massive discounts to win a cup, then the team pays for his retirement on the back end.

It sorta feels like Mac earned it.

People use this contract to really pump Mackinnon's character but really he got a player friendly contract after struggling to find his feet early in his career.

The misinfo about him "taking a team friendly deal to win" is just propaganda.

He didn't take a discount. He signed before he broke out.

Do you know what happens when cup winning teams player resign much bigger lucrative contracts? They stop winning cups. In fact, they stop winning playoff rounds.

I would say a 10.5m-11m AAV is a discount for the avs, will make macK get good money and make the ave still be able to ice a real good team, especially with a rising cap

however more than that (which macK is probably worth) is going to be hard

I don't believe this.

I think he'll get paid, but I think he'll leave some money on the table from this level. I would expect 8 years at 11mil or something like that.

We can conclude that MacKinnon does not like being a team mate of one Nazem Kadri.

Otherwise, I suppose given where he is in the NHL hierachy, the sweet discount his last deal represented, and the fact that McD signed his deal a while back.... it is not completely outrageous that Mac aims that high. It does however have pretty meaningful consequences for the Avs if that is what it will take.
